Having seen CW come in for some tactical criticism recently, particularly regarding substitutions, I feel it is only fair to point out how he got it right at Reading. I too have joined some of this previous criticism and I completely reject the idea that just because he’s our best manager in recent years, he’s above reproach. He makes mistakes sometimes – he often admits it too.

We started defensively against Reading, contained them (not that it was hard) and tried to dominate the game in our usual fashion. It wasn’t working, but every minute that ticked by we were resting our better, more creative but older players (Sharp and Duffy basically).

Come half time, it was still 0-0 so Duffy came on and totally changed things. Reading had no answer and spent the next 15 minutes on the back foot, before Sharp came on and provided some real threat up top. Reading moved from being on the back foot to on the rack and it was only a matter of time.

Fleck was getting on the ball more, we were moving it quickly through Duffy (who none of them really got near) and yes we left it late, but two goals sealed the game late on.

There was no panic, no desperation and no real frustration. We came down to Reading, worked them all over the pitch and delivered the knock-out blow. Usually with United it’s blood and thunder, four or five goals (and either team could get them) and a game that spends long periods like a basketball game – end to end, where we could easily win lose or draw.

It was kind of nice to just see your team turn up and efficiently get the job done. CW deserves the credit for delivering that through some excellent tactical tweaks and a polished performance.

I thought it was nice to not be at our best and still win relatively comfortably. Usually we have to play really well to get a win.

I also thought wilder got it bang on. Reading aren't that potent up front so he would have been confident we could contain them. First half we let them come at us and tried to play on the break.

Second half they continued with the same shape which is why Duffy coming on really changed the game. If Duffy and sharp started we might have seen a completely different game with reading sitting everyone deep and us struggling to break them down.

The second half was perfect for Duffy to come on and enjoy a bit of space because after that first half reading were never gonna stick 11 men behind the ball for the second half.

Well bloody said, a professional and organised performance. We didn't turn up as well in the first half, management saw that and addressed it.

Too often recently have we been guilty of not putting sides to the sword. On Saturday we were organised and clinical when it mattered most.

You were sorely missed on the shoutbox on Saturday, by the way....

Good OP and I agree with most of your points.

Only slight disagreement I have is that I think a more true, pure professional performance would look something like:
Reading 0 2 Sheffield United
Fleck (25)
Sharp (70)

This is what I'd really like to see in the coming weeks. Where we show up, have a good start, get a goal for our efforts, and then just steadily control the game, adding another maybe on the break in the 2nd half.

We are able to do this, eg Bolton, but to do it more regularly would be fantastic.

Too often when we get an early goal it proceeds into a frantic back and forth of end to end conceding and scoring, which don't get me wrong is entertaining, but it's also better for our hearts to be comfortable every once in a while..

Second half performance was as good as I’ve seen this year from the Blades
