Sorry no report from Blackpool – embarrassingly I was at Hillsborough watching my mate’s Port Vale side (promised him I would go if they came up) in the away end so only saw the game afterwards and never got round to penning my reports in the busy holiday season….

----

The Blades winning run ended in the capital but it was a huge point thanks to a late goal from John Egan who turned from villain to hero. With almost the last kick of the game Egan’s deflected effort went in to gain a crucial draw when United had been far from their best. Indeed, it was Egan that had deflected into his own net from Chair’s shot that gave Rangers the lead, one they held onto for the duration until the late drama.

United made three changes with Egan back in for Robinson, Doyle for McAtee and Baldock for Bogle. Lowe was missing with a strain and there was still no place in the squad for either McBurnie or Khadra. QPR picked a relatively attacking line up with Dykes flanked by Chair, Willock and Roberts in an attempt to arrest their recent slide.

United began well with some good football down the right and a dangerous cross just evaded anyone coming in before a chance arrived for Ndiaye but he took too long. The Blades continued their good start and Rangers were camped in for he first 5 minutes but gradually came out although Ndiaye showed a lovely bit of skill to come away from his man.

However, the first shot on goal led to a goal but it came from dreadful play from Egan. Back from a suspension, he did not have the best returns as he received a goal kick from Foderingham and then played a poor pass straight to Roberts who fed DYKE. The midfielder took a shot and it hit Egan and completely wrongfooted the United keeper and nestled into the net.

Rangers buoyed by this goal had another attack and Chair’s cross shot was not far over before on 19 minutes United created their first real chance as Ndiaye fed Sharp whose low left footed shot was saved by the legs of Dieng. Norwood fired over from the subsequent clearance.

United were not at their best and Rangers were pressing Norwood and the United defence and it was leading to cheap giveaways. Roberts put Clark on his backside as he came down the left-hand side and his cross was hit by Willock and Berge had to get a block. Stevens and Clark were struggling with the running down this side and with Willock and Chair to the fore, and Berge and Ndiaye not in the game in contrast.

Rangers won two corners but the Blades broke from one and Ndiaye ran half the pitch but was blocked out with no support but this was the spark for a better spell from United and good football saw Sharp and Ndiaye feed Berge whose pass should have been hit from Baldock but he chose to pass and it eventually fell to Stevens whose shot was arrowed wide.

Foderingham took a chance as he caught the ball right on the edge of the box. It seemed referee Smith guessed from his angle and booked the Blades keeper. The free kick was not properly cleared and Clark had to block Dickie’s effort before Chair was not closed down again and had another deflected shot. Rangers had been the better side and with Doyle and Norwood not controlling midfield, the Blades struggled to get any kind of fluency as the half time whistle went.

Clark was replaced by Robinson at half time who had a slight hamstring issue. Dykes’ effort deflected wide as QPR continued where they left off. Twice both keepers went down with Ahmedhodzic penalised for a foul on Dieng and then Dykes likewise for going in on Foderingham.

Dykes flick on saw Willock come inside but he fired his effort over before Dickie then nearly got in at the near post after good work from Roberts. Kakay then shot wide as United had struggled to muster much of a response after the break but then they were nearly level out of nothing. Norwood’s ball forward saw Sharp in the clear and as Dieng advanced, the lob was on and executed but the veteran got too much on it and it went onto the top of the net rather than dipping and landing in it.

Doyle’s poor night was evidenced by a give away and a daft foul and was soon hooked for McAtee and soon after Sharp and Ndiaye linked leading to Stevens having an effort deflected wide with his right foot. United had improved and Rangers seemed to be tiring. Ndiaye then broke after rolling his man and reminiscent of the McAtee goal at Blackpool, he set off on his way and ran the whole half beating his man with a step over before a heavy touch saw Dieng close him down and smother. It was a great run but lacked the finish.

Amos and Adomah replaced Roberts and Willock and Jebbison came on for Baldock for the Blades. The Blades were having much more of the ball and were moving it around better with McAtee making a real difference but had not really created much outside of the two chances from Sharp and McAtee and the game ticked into the last 10 minutes.

Jebbison did well to win a free kick and then won a corner before Bogle came on for Ahmedhodzic as United sought to try and find a bit of magic to get something from the came. Jebbison turned nearly but his shot was saved by Dieng and then Berge’s cross was taken by the excellent keeper who had played very well. The additional time was 5 minutes but Kakay went down during the start of this after he fouled Sharp and needed treatment meaning there would be another minute added on to this five. United kept pushing and several balls came in with Robinson’s long throws a feature of the desperate hunt for a leveller. Finally, a ball came over and Sharp returned it over leading to Stevens twice doing well and he turned it back on his second touch leading to EGAN hitting a low effort that flicked a defender and nestled into the corner. United celebrated like they had won with wild scenes on and off the field. The final whistle went almost immediately after the game restarted and the Blades had taken a point in a game, they had struggled to get control of and had been outworked from their opponents until the final late surge.

United – We began well for 5-10 minutes and you though if we get one here, we go on and win easily but we only had a few half chances or crosses going in and they grew into the game. Dykes was a handful (not as much as Warnock made out!) and Chair/Willock did more than Ndiaye and Berge for us getting into good areas. They had forced us back but the goal is ridiculous with Egan’s bad pass and then deflecting it in. A double error really. Not sure Wes should have played it him there as they were pressing but it’s still all on Egan. After this had a few moments from Ndiaye and Sharp had an effort saved and Stevens one wide but in general play they closed us down, worked harder and actually looked more dangerous as we were sloppy all over. Norwood was not in the game and Berge saw the game just pass him by. As for Doyle, well to say he looked rusty was an understatement. I think Hecky should have made more changes but Clark was the only one to go with an injury and I just hoped we would improve second half as we struggled to get in even at 1-0.

To be honest second half think we regressed for 15-20 minutes and not sure we really improved at all. They had a few more half chances but then Sharp misses a really good one but I felt we never really put any meaningful pressure on them at all and needed to change it. McAtee came on finally and made a difference and Ndiaye has the big chance but maybe took too long despite a great run. QPR had been good value but Jebbison gave us an outlet when he came on and they started to tire. We had loads of the ball and lots going in the box but not sure the keeper had too much to do after the Ndiaye miss and it was just percentage stuff or knock downs really and often we overplayed instead of getting it wide and crossing it. We took too long to turn them round but then as it looked lost, we get a good ball in and return it and we take a half chance with a bit of luck going our way after it had gone against us first half. It was a big goal and a huge point. We ended the game pressing and chasing but it took us too long to put them under pressure and just felt they sat back. For too long we were poor on the ball with passes short and no one taking responsibility. I was hugely disappointed with Doyle and Berge. They put pressure on Norwood and often had 3 men on Ndiaye but those two need to do much better. They sort of sauntered around and need to do much more. McAtee looks a much better option then both of them currently and made a difference again. Credit to us for keeping going and could be a big point come the end of the season but we have to play much better than that. We had way too many off the game. I might get criticised for this but not sure we have been brilliant since Burnley and that is in 6 straight wins, is it? We have just got the first goal in all those games and had something to defend. I think we have deserved to win every game but we have not blown teams away.

We have shown it in patches and some individual brilliance from players has got us goals but overall, we have not been totally convincing like we were earlier in the season. We have ground out results and tonight was no different. I think we need to get a settled team now and stop messing around. The run of games is more favourable in terms of less games in week/s. I’d rest nearly them all for the cup on Saturday giving the likes of Jebbison, Doyle, Bogle games and chance to get match fit. However, after this he needs to play Lowe (if fit), play McAtee and get MCBurnie back in. Up front it is a struggle as the main tactic is get it Ndiaye and hope he beats 2 or 3 men. I think we need a Dykes/Madine type player especially if McBurnie is never going to be fully fit as the evidence suggests. This signing is crucial for me if we want to hold onto our lead at the top as teams will realise, we have to play through them to score. The goal came tonight when we chucked men up but in general play we did not create much really. Not saying they did either of course. Overall, it is a big draw as all the results went against us and psychologically makes a huge difference with almost a fortnight to the next league game. We now have two weeks to rest (as I would not play many if any at all on Saturday) and try and come back with two big wins in the league at home and two games where we need to get back to the form we have shown before rather than gritting things out. Stoke and Hull are sides we need to go and really take on and go at.

Ratings:

Foderingham 6/10 – Seemed to pick up a knock early and was not quite right. Not sure he needed to play it to Egan when he made the error as all seemed a bit tight. No chance after the deflection. Then got injured before carrying on but did seem to struggle with his kicking. Silly booking – it looked close but just kick or head it out? After this not sure he had much to do really. A few shots wide and then routine catch when he got crunched. One ball he missed as it came over but he was not really tested after this.

Baldock 6/10 – Thought he struggled with Chair who kept coming down his side and was mostly defending. Had a few opportunities going forward including one where he needs to shoot but again too hesitant to do things quickly or first time. He committed a few silly fouls and struggled to have much of an impact going forward. Taken off as we went with another up top

Stevens 6/10 – Continued to look a shadow of the player he was for the first half but improved after the break and big credit for his role in the final part of the game. They got down his side time after time and he gave it away when he had it top start the game. Seeing balls bounce over his head or off his shin is sad to see but he is not up to it anymore. Interesting Boyes has been brought back – reports from Forest Green have been mixed but with Lowe injured again we do need competition and it is worrying we had to terminate his loan in terms of possible prognosis on Lowe? Second half he did have one shot with his right foot and actually put one good cross in too and generally was far better. He then was cool to keep the ball in and play it back for Egan on the late goal.

Ahmedhodzic 6/10 – Started well forward and involved but then had to defend more and at times he was too slow to react to things. We just sat off and gave them too much time and he was as guilty as any of them but then needed help from midfield. He did keep plugging away and was more advanced as the game went on and linked down the right a few times before he came off for Bogle.

Clark 6/10 – He has done well recently but thought he struggled a bit on and out of possession as they had too much time when they attacked. Not sure if he was injured – Sky said slight hamstring injury. I think Stevens, Doyle, Sharp could have gone before him if not?

Egan 6/10 – Nightmare return to start the game and carried on from the last game. Sent off and then comes back and gives it away and then deflects it in (would have possibly been hand ball too!). Dykes caused him real problems tonight for long spells but as the game went on, he started to win more. Credit to him for getting the goal that salvaged the draw.

Norwood 6/10 – Not in it and quietest he has been for a long time. As at the Lane, they pressed him and he did not have the influence as was too deep and with no outlet. Second half he had more of the ball and put the ball to Sharp I think and also was allowing us to keep sending the ball back in as we pressured them at the end. Improved when McAtee came on.

Doyle 4/10 – Completely ineffectual and mostly anonymous in terms of getting on the ball and pressing/tackling. Looked miles off it in terms of match sharpness. Would have played him in the Cup myself to ease him back in. Seemed to far off the ball and we did not win first or second balls in this area.

Berge 4.5/10 – Started on the ball and involved but then as the game went on, he became less and less involved and too slow to react and lost it in key areas. One or two little passes/moments but nowhere near enough for someone we need to take games by the scruff of the neck. Despite his goal the other night, he has been really off it recently since his return. He had numerous opportunities to drive or make things happen but the ball came off him or he played it back. Looks low on confidence at the moment. We need much more from him. People say he can just turn games but not sure he does it very often? After he did really well end of last season and a few flashes to start this season; he has gone back to the anonymous Berge from the first period of his United career. Not sure anyone signs him the way he is playing. We would do well to get half the money we paid for him.

Ndiaye 6.5/10 – Few neat touches and moments but he had little help at all and I thought Sharp was not really in the game to help him meaning he had to do it all alone. One or two flicks and runs but he has to have help. He kept going and had the one chance when he ran through but then as the game went on he just got crowded out and they really surrounded him. Still at times some lovely touches and one of our main threats.

Sharp 6/10 – Not in the game other than one shot that was ok but keeper saved it fairly comfortably and then the lobbed finish. The ball kept coming back and our front line had no help or support at all but that is not his game. He had two chances and missed them both and that is what often dictates his game. Did help set up the goal at the end and kept going but we need more help up there.

Subs –

Robinson 5.5/10 – Thought it was a bit of a struggle for him when he came on and they got past him a few times but then used his long throw to good affect and helped set up the late goal.

McAtee 7/10 – Thought he made a huge difference in terms of his ability on the ball and ran at them and caused problems. At the moment he needs to start and we had a big downgrade with Doyle. He is full of confidence and showed his ability and emerging confidence.

Jebbison – Played well and best we have seen him for a while. He ran at players, held it up better and had a good effort. He looked a nuisance and ran at them. Would give him a start on Saturday in the cup.

Bogle – Brought on and played virtual right wing as United attacked.

Manager: Heckingbottom 5/10 – Picked the wrong team. Yes, he has to rest players but McAtee was in great form and Bogle played well the other day. We had a break after this too in the league? Thought we had little attacking threat outside Ndiaye. However, we lost the battles for long spells and were guilty of overplaying too. His chances came too late but after McAtee came on we finally improved and pushed them back but we needed to make this change at half time. He deserves credit for the Jebbison change as they helped us push them back.

QPR – Had been flying when we played them earlier in the season and seemed like they had a chance of automatic promotion as new manager Michael Beale seemed to have found a way of playing. They were a bit lucky to win at the Lane but defended well and looked dangerous on the break with Willock and Chair real threats. However, with Beale linked with Wolves and then Villa before he finally left for Rangers (Scotland Rangers!) and either side of this they struggled with new manager Critchley, another Gerrard assistant not having the instant impact they would have wanted. They fell away from being in the top 6 to more mid table although it is still tight of course and a few wins and you are back amongst it. I look at the squad and they seem on paper as much a threat as Luton/Millwall/Blackburn and have some experience and some talented attacking players but the constant change of manager has not really helped with three since the end of last season. I still think they will be on the fringes of the top 6.

I was concerned when they got beaten so well at home and this was the second consecutive 0-3 reverse at Loftus Road and you think the closeness of the division means that is unlikely a side loses three in a row at home. I actually would have been happy with a point today and in the end was really happy. They worked hard and played well for an hour but then sat back and in the end you kind of felt they might concede as they stopped trying to attack. We have seen this with us and other sides and if you invite pressure, then you can inevitably concede.

Opponent Man of the Match – Always liked Chair and he was the best player on the field at the Lane and maybe was again tonight. Quick feet and gets into good areas. Probably gets frustrated at the players he has round him at Loftus Road who do not always seem on the same wave length. He was their best player despite Willock showing bits and Dykes working hard (not quite the Alan Shearer Warnock described!). The keeper Dieng always impresses me and if we went up, I wonder if we might go back for him as have been linked before?

Opponent Weak link – Not sure anyone was awful but Dunne and Dickie could get turned and run at and when Jebbison was on, this was evidenced as we had another outlet.

Referee/Officials – Josh Smith. Not sure he was as good as Warnock said (he came out with a lot of nonsense tonight did our former boss!) and he guessed a lot of things – the bookings for both teams were harsh and the handball on Wes not sure it was? He gave a lot of odd decisions I thought – both ways. The only thing I will say is that the extra time was right as Kakay was down for almost a minute so they cannot really complain about that.

Sorry no report from Blackpool – embarrassingly I was at Hillsborough watching my mate’s Port Vale side (promised him I would go if they came up) in the away end so only saw the game afterwards and never got round to penning my reports in the busy holiday season….
Disgraceful!

Thanks for the report Deadbat
Probably because Colin was creaming himself over Dykes, so you thought he must have scored too.

Thought it was Doyle's worst game for us, I'd have possibly hooked him at HT for McAtee who I thought was really good when introduced.

Pleased for Jebbo to get a more positive cameo and certainly offered us something different as I felt Sharp didn't hold it up at all and that forced Ndiaye to overplay on occasions meaning neither of them got it to stick for the first 45-60 mins.

Its a point away but it could have been more if we had taken the handbrake off and picked a team from the off that played on the front foot. Mcatee and Ndiaye were the difference against Coventry and Blackpool. Robins said so after his game. Unless there was an injury to Mcatee its difficult to understand why he didn't start as evidenced by his cameo when he came on.

QPR pressed Norwood out of the game and Mcatees pace would have been a good outlet earlier in the game as we regressed into a flat 3.

Listening to PH after the game its clear he was worried about QPR's threat on the counter but this was a team that was having difficulty scoring and we gifted them their goal. Its a decent return over Christmas but we need to concentrate on how we play and not the opposition too much. There are more difficult games to come away and we need to avoid going back into defensive mode against the likes of Burnley, Blackburn and Sunderland.

The FA Cup should be used to give the likes of Bogle, Basham, Doyle and Robinson game time. The rest should be wrapped up in cotton wool for Stoke with academy players such as Brooks making up the numbers for Wall. We're in a good position and should be confident of playing on the front foot for the rest of the season. Biggest concern is Clarks hamstring. We have looked so much better defensively since he came back into the side and to lose him again for a period will affect us.

Manager says he hopes the squad will remain intact after the JTW. I suspect we all would say we hope its a minimum of plus 1 in the forward line.

Bit harsh on JLT for me. I thought he added a bit of aggression we needed.

Doyle should have been replaced earlier for sure, and McAtee's introduction put us back on top. Without proper support up to that point it was hardly surprising Illy and Billy were struggling to make an impact. Berge was better than half a point more than Doyle, but at least 1.5 points were added to the ludicrously bias assessment of 3.0 from old Pompous!

Thanks for the objective reporting again Deadbat, and the absence of schoolboy abuse that seems so much in vogue these days!

I just marvel at the fact that we are 2nd with a strike force of a 36yr old

and our only backup is a 19yr old who has never completed a full game

That was a well balanced report DB, thanks.
We are being a bit harsh on Egan, he's been carrying the defence for much of the first half of the season, QPRs deflected goal and Egan making a hash of things was unfortunate, I hate to see goalie's play out to a defender, if he's caught in possession it's a one on one with the goalie.
Maybe Wes' is unable to kick to well, he's had a few knocks of late ?

They did a job on our midfield, taking out Norwood & Ndiaye always works for opposing teams and QPR did it well last night, I think Mcatee staring would have given us another outlet and something else for them to worry about , unless he's less than fully fit, he is only a young kid after all.

As everybody has alluded to we need another alternative up front, not holding my breath unless Khadra's loan is terminated and it frees up a bit of cash to bring another one in.

Stoke won't be easy and we have had mixed fortunes with Hull in the past, my guess is four points from those two, Surely Burnley can't keep winning - can they ? and the chasing pack all seem capable of dropping (more) points than we do.
I think we can get promotion but it will end up being a "squeaky bum" finish to the season - then the fun will start,! it's going to take a lot of investment on the playing side to keep us there!

Never a dull moment supporting Dem Blades Eh!
