Anybody else on here going to Pompey away in a couple of weeks?

There's five of us going down and staying overnight in the Ibis. Just wondered if anybody had been down there before and could recommend pubs etc?

I'd stay away from most near the ground. You're best bet is to go for a few in the centre before making your way to Fratton

I'd recommend staying away from the ground. nearly 300 miles away, and stay at home! Very admirable for you to be paying plenty of hard-earned cash to go watch that nightmare!

It's not hard-earned, I'm a student :p To be honest we've chosen the weekend more as a weekend away, rather than to watch the magical skills of Quinn and Cresswell.

We went to a little pub round the corner last time. Can't for the life of me remember what it was called.

I just remember we couldn't find fish and chips for love nor money.

Weather permitting, Foxy and I will be heading southwards (oooo err!) on Thursday and meandering around various campsites before hitting the Portsmouth area.

the pub that linz was talking about is called the good companion iirc.. the last time i went it was an away-friendly pub and is only a few minutes from the ground

i was a student in pompey for 3 years, you'd be best looking for bars in the guildhall walk area as opposed to actual pubs- a lot of them (particularly in fratton) arent too friendly, especially to people dressed in red and white stripes.

as you are a student, head for either guildhall walk or gunwharf in the evening. im pretty sure the actual Union has closed the bars..

i'll definitely be at the game though- im pretty sure its my first blades match since we beat pompey at fratton park in the season they went up..

I'll be going. Will be my first time going to Fratton Park, so cannot give you advice.

Making a weekend of it with a couple of mates of mine. Be happy to meet for beers before and/or after the game if you are up for it. Send me a PM with your no if you fancy it. We can arrnage in a few weeks, or play it by ear when we are down there. There might be a few London Blades too.

Those who have been: Any decent real ale boozers down there?

I've only been once and I thought it was a fucking hole. I cycled from London and took the ferry to France. My mate and I had a couple of beers in a pub, whilst we waited for the ferry and tried to hydrate ourselves. It was a sunny Saturday afternoon. By the time the evening came around I was readfy for getting out of there. It was a mixture of rough fisherman, young thugs donning Ben Sherman shirts looking for a fight and attractive (yet hard as fuck) birds covered in tattoos. One bord walked past, size 8 and gorgeous with a little black dress on. I could not take my eyes off her and then I noticed her whole back was tattooed. Then her boyfriend noticed me staring at her and cam over (with his 3 mates - all as rough looking as him). I had two choices: a) give him a Rotherham kiss and hope for the best or b) get the fuck out of there. I opted for the latter and the managed to get on my bike and shoot. Now I am choosing to go down there for a night out after a footy match  (might not be wearing colours that game)

Cheers for the advice. We're getting down there for about 10, so will probably head into the city centre first then go to that pub near the ground later on.

Tried to send you a PM, but it said you have reached your limit on the space quota or something.... But yeah, I'm up for meeting some fellow Blades. Not sure if we'll be taking many down there, so it'll be good to get in a pub with as many as possible.

I've been a few times. It was the first away game i got bladdered at in the 94/95 season due to my uncle being based down there so he took me on the lash.

A good pub is the Froddington Arms near Fratton Station. It's my usual port of call when i go to Fratton Park.

I'm going down in a couple of weeks as well, but i'm doing the driving so it will be a beer free day for me

May suggest you check out these 2 websites internet football guide & my fav the football & real ale guide for good pubs, I use em all the time. Artillery arms looks good.

Not sure if the "Fawcwett Inn" is still open in Pompey, but is worth a visit just for the name.

I would recommend the Still & West on the front, near Gunwharf Quays. Nice pint of HSB last time I was there. It's about 10-15 mins walk to Portsmouth Harbour station from where it's 2 stops to Fratton.

I'll have to save my first visit to Fratton Park til next season as I'm at college. Not sure which is worse, a Blades game or accountancy school.

their own brand cider is awesome ;)

5 mins walk from fratton park, not a bad pub to be honest but it used to be a bit of a 'locals pub'

i used to live there (ok i lived in southsea the posh bit) and it is the roughest place i've ever been.. makes sheffield look like the cotswolds
definitely avoid the mother shipton and the mighty fine (if they are still there!).. if you are going by train the third last stop is fratton so you can get off there and walk round the corner.. one time the USS Enterprise (huge aircraft carrier) was moored in the Solent (too big for the Naval base).. there was a huge battle between the US sailors and UK Marines + various locals.. about a thousand involved (i shit you not) on southsea seafront.. never made the news.. heh.. watched it all out of my mates flat window:hello:
always remember.. portsmouth is a proper town .. the people are almost northern in their outlook.. it is quite poor.. don't think they are the usual southern middle class types because they aren't .. it's a bit like going to Newcastle in my experience.. hth..
p.s. the couple of years i was there we beat them 4 nil one time and i can't remember the other score

p.p.s. i wouldn't go in the black dog either

Would it be better to get the Train back from Portsmouth and Soutsea Station at 5.50pm to Waterloo missing out Fratton Station .

I think you'll find that nearly all the Trains from Portsmouth/South Sea to Waterloo stop at Fratton. Why walk further away for about 15 mins to catch a train that will stop at Fratton 5 mins after Portsmouth/?Southsea?
