Late drama on the South Coast, as Andre Brooks 90th minute winner stole the game for the Blades in a game they were second best in for long periods. After Pompey dominated the first half and missed several opportunities, United did improve after the break with substitutes improving matters but they still would have been fortunate to even take a point over the course of the game. However, late on, O’Hare and Campbell linked down the left and the latter’s cross fell invitingly for Brooks to steer home from close range to spark jubilant scenes in the away end of the ground behind the goal.

Wilder made changes to his midfield with Phillips in for his full debut for the Blades and Soumare back in. Peck and Arblaster dropped to the bench. Cannon also came in for O’Hare as United went with a more orthodox front two. Pompey were ravaged with injuries but started with Colby Bishop up top. United won an early corner but this came to nothing before the home side won one of their own but this was also cleared.

United managed to get the ball into the box as Bamford came inside but his effort was blocked on 4 minutes. The game was scrappy with neither side having any real control but Alli did well to get away from Seriki on 11 minutes and dinked a cross over that Adams met but his looping header landed on top of the goal.

Hamer had a cross returned to him and tried to catch Schmid out with a driven near post effort that bounced off the outside of the post and out with the angle always going to be difficult to score from. After this foray, United sat back and the home side started to take over. Alli again got the better of Seriki and the ball came into the box. Swift met it and got it towards goal but what should have been routine for Cooper, saw the keeper make a hash of it and almost fumbled it into his own net. From the corner Segecic hit a bouncing effort that Tanganga headed out from his own six-yard box.

Seriki’s difficult start continued as Alli got away from him again and as he drove towards goal, he was in with a good chance but his effort lacked power and Cooper got down to hold the shot. Portsmouth thought they had the lead on 22 minutes. Alli was in a central area this time and managed to weave his way into the box but he overran it slightly and the referee deemed he caught Seriki as he tried to challenge and gave a free kick. The ball dropped and Bishop slammed home. The Pompey players and fans were not happy. Replays showed there was some contact but it was a decision that went for the Blades, to keep the score level.

The home side kept coming as United looked devoid of energy and were not pressing, tackling or even trying to move up the field. They sat in a low block, almost content to keep the game tight but once again were getting overran in midfield with Soumare and Phillips continuing the same poor level of performance, as Peck and Arblaster in the week.

Pompey won another corner before United finally broke out and Swift caught Hamer with a late tackle which seemed an obvious booking and Linington duly obliged. Still, the ball came back at United and Segecic was the next to have a go, as he came inside and hit a driven effort which Cooper beat out. Devlin won a 50-50 challenge, which was a symbol for how much the home side had wanted the game – certainly more than the laboured Blades. The midfielder screwed his effort wide but it was not long before Pompey came again. This time Swanson had a free header from more positive play from the standout player, Alli, but the effort again was tame.

Seriki seemed to be tripped but the referee waved play on but then incredibly pulled up Brooks who clearly won the ball with the next challenge. The home side were the only team looking like creating anything positive and came again with Burrows beaten too easily leading to another corner. Devlin again was left free, as United’s zonal marking continued to hinder them – this time it went wide.

A rare free kick came in the Portsmouth half but Bamford could only loop Burrow’s free kick tamely over before the game returned to type with Alli on the attack, trying a shot with the outside of his foot but Cooper got down to pouch. Soumare had been extremely careless in possession and again under no pressure, tossed the ball away and Pompey broke but United managed to scramble back to clear with Bindon – United’s stand out player, in the right place. Tanganga went down with an injury just as 2 minutes additional time began but after he recovered, Hamer when picked up another stupid booking for hauling back Swift. Pompey ended the half as they had been occupied for most of it – on the attack. This time Bishop tried to help on the free kick but flicked it wide. United went in fortunate to be level as there had only been one team trying to attack so far and the lack of urgency, energy and attacking threat completely missing from a dreadful Blades performance – akin to that at nearby Southampton, only last month.

O’Hare came on for the ineffective Cannon at the break. United at least now were getting a foothold in the game and Phillips started to win some tackles. Soumare unfortunately could not do that and was cautioned for bringing down his man. Pompey took a clever corner and played it back for Swift but his curler went just past the post. O’Hare had a run out and found Bamford but the striker took too long to bring it down and was blocked. Soumare was replaced by Peck on 55 minutes before there was a skirmish between Phillips and Adams near the touchline.

United had a chance as Devlin dallied on the ball and Bamford sent over a low cross that squirmed across the goal. Seriki then went on an enterprising run but O’Hare’s step over found nobody! It was better from United but some wayward passes from Peck and O’Hare stopped another opportunity but at least the visitors were trying to force the home side back. Hamer came onto the ball and curled an effort not far wide and the same man found Burows whose cross was blocked behind.

United were now creating chances and Bindon flicked ono Peck’s in swinging cross but it was too close to Schmid. Not long after Brooks tried a long-range effort that swerved just wide with the keeper beaten. Campbell came on for Bamford and Pack/Williams for Swift/Swanson . Alli continued to be the main threat for the home side who had not had the same level of control and since the Swift chance, not created anything of note. However, the winger got down the side and his effort was finger tipped past the post by Cooper. Alli was taking the attention of Seriki and Brooks and won another corner soon after as the home side started to look the more likely again – after United’s purple patch for the first half of the second half.

Brown came on for Segovic and almost made an instant impact – from a corner, he reacted but could only stab it at Cooper and the keeper made the save. The substitute should have scored as he was left completely unmarked.

Cooper then had to make a double punch as the balls rained into the Blades box and United’s threat was now not as convincing. The game moved into the final 5 minutes and Tanganga’s weak header dropped for Pompey but they could not get the shot away. A yellow card came for Phillips as he stopped a quick free kick being taken before he was replaced by Arblaster. Seriki also departed with Hoever coming on.

As the game entered the 90th minutes, United broke and looked to have snatched all three points, right at the death. O’Hare broke away and slipped Campbell in. The striker hit a low cross across goal and Schmid could only get a fingertip on it and BROOKS reacted to turn the ball home from close range. The winger celebrated with his now trademark somersault and backflip in front of the United supporters. There was still to be 7 minutes of stoppage time to be played and the Blades had a break to try and seal it but the keeper got there just before Brooks, after Hamer’s ball through. Burrows took a foul to stop the break for Pompey not long after.

The home side had rather weak appeals for a penalty as the ball bounced around the box but it went out for a corner in the end and Adams headed over. Pompey did create a chance as they had men over and Alli was once again the danger. His low shot was saved by Cooper down low and the keeper got up and managed to scramble it away. Pompey put one last throw in but despite Hoever not completing the first clearance properly, O’Hare cleared and the final whistle came soon after. A huge three points for the Blades and keeps alive their slim hopes of a play off charge. It was massive blow for Pompey at the foot of the table.

United – We played far, far better in the week in a defeat than we did today but that’s how Football goes of course. Against a poorer side, United rode their luck as the home side completely dominated the first half and had loads of decent, if not guilt edged chances. They had a goal disallowed and maybe could have gone for them. We never got going. We just sat off, lacked energy and were so deep. Cannon and Bamford never linked at all and we did not get the ball to Brooks and Hamer. The midfield pairing of Soumare and Phillips was as ineffective as Arblaster and Peck in the week. We looked so flat and lethargic. Pompey were not brilliant but better than us by some way and they did get down the side and Alli caused us problems. Cooper made a few saves; most expected but shots/efforts and clear chances were coming too easily. We did not keep it when we had it and and just sat off. We had no link between defence and midfield and midfield and attack. I think against a better side, we would have been a few goals down but their finishing and final moments lacked quality despite them being far better than us. We just did not seem up for it. It felt like WBA/Wrexham and Soton and seems to be more the norm when we are away – where we look a different team, to the one at the Lane. He changed a few players but we still had no real freshness about us. We have undoubted quality but did not get on the ball and then in challenges/duels, we lost many of them. I was just glad to get to half time without conceding.

We made changes – O’Hare for Cannon and eventually Peck for Soumare – the latter came 10 minutes later than it should have done. We did improve. Phillips started to control midfield and we had more of the ball with O’Hare getting in those little areas and Hamer/Brooks coming inside to see more of the ball. Like Pompey, we did not create clear chances and most were long range efforts/shots but we suddenly looked the better team for 20 minutes. Bamford had not been great but after he went off I thought we lost any impetus and from 70-90; they started to get a foothold again and had a few chances of their own – Alli and then the one from Brown from the corner. Cooper had to punch away twice and I thought it seemed like we lost any kind of momentum. At this stage, it seemed like we just were content to take a point and get out of there and did not take on the improved spell from 50-70 minutes to go on. At this stage, they looked the more likely wo nick it but it became a scrappy and niggly game with lots of fouls/stoppages. It was a far cry from the entertaining and very technical game in the week with two sides playing fluent and attractive football.

However, we get a chance to break and O’Hare has a bit of quality to find the ball down the side and Campell did well to be fair to find the cross. Keeper should do better but Brooks anticipated and continued his excellent scoring form. It was a real smash and grab – as despite us being the better side for a spell second half, Pompey undoubtedly were the ones finishing the stronger and over the 90 minutes has deserved the win. 60% possession – 23 shots to 12 and 7 on target to 3. 2.5 XPG to 0.99 also shows who had the better chances and indeed more clear chances. They had nearly 100 more passes and 71% accuracy to our 61% with 75 successful final third passes to 24 and 41 touches to 10 in the opposition box. However, you dress it up, they were the better side and should have won. I would say for all the stats, I can only think of maybe two good chances (Alli the one first half where he fluffed it and the Brown one from the corner). Alli had several shots at Cooper and a few headers in the box but it was not like they missed sitters and Cooper made several wonderful saves. There main issue was the lack of quality with the final parts in the box where they got into great areas but did not execute.

Despite this, United have to be much better. We sat back, did not engage in midfield and allowed players too much space all over the field. Our passing was slow and inaccurate with so many loose touches/balls. Soumare was as bad as Arblaster in the week, Cannon not effective – losing every duel and Burrows looking poor again. Only Hamer tried to make things happen first half but we were so poor up to the break. We did have a better spell and Phillips massively improved as I have said. We also got O’Hare and Brooks into the game. I did not see the goal coming though as they were starting to ask questions again and we started to sit back. The changes made suggested we would just take our point and get out of there but we did provide a bit of quality just with two passes to steal the game. I actually feel we have not had much luck recently and seems like ref decisions or balls have not dropped and we have seen this in several games. The goal they scored could have been given on another day – there was contact but Seriki went down quite easily and I would there be huge complaints if this is given? It is the sort of decision we have not been getting though so nice for us to get one. Also, the goal, the keepers touch finally finds our man – we saw with Boro and Millwall in recent games balls dropping for them at vital points – so again nice for it to fall for us.

Positives were Cooper (some odd moments again but made some key saves), Bindon who was our best player and Phillips had a good 2nd half. Brooks again looked a threat – particularly second half and Hamer showed technically he is the most likely to make something happen. Bamford, Cannon and Campbell (despite the late assist) did not look threats most of the game and concerns remain over the midfield in general – he has to play Phillips and Peck next week surely? O’Hare has had a drop off but starts over Cannon every week for me. Burrows still is struggling and Seriki has lacked energy the last few games. There are too many up and down performances across the team but we do have that bit of quality to nick games even if we play poorly if we can keep clean sheets. First one for a long time today.

It is a big three points. We rarely win at Fratton Park so breaks that hoodoo too. It also sort of completely kills any outside chance of relegation (10 points/more like 11 with GD) unless we go on a horrendous run and whilst the gap to the top 6 is still a lot of places – it is only 6 points. We need two huge performances versus them lot and then Coventry. We need the Lane to be loud and intimidating. Next week hopefully will take care of itself. Be fantastic to put them down and for me, just get the win. IF we score a few more goals, then great but Millwall have only just scraped by them today so won’t be a cakewalk I do not think. They will sit in, play on the break and we have to be patient but if we play as we have done at home then we should win and win by a level of comfort you hope. Coventry a few days after should be tougher on paper but they are dropping off – so not totally ridiculous to say we can get 4-6 points from the next two and then face QPR away and West Brom away – who have both struggled recently. I still think it is a long shot and my concern is we see too many performances like today – particularly away from home. We got away with it massively today and won’t in future games if we play and start so badly. I keep thinking we have clicked but then serve up one of those games (like every 1 in 3 or 4) and that means we will probably drop points to make it hard to make up the ground. We are still inconsistent in how we play and away from home, the mentality to just sit back and sit deep is quite depressing to watch. Still, we won today and that is the most important thing. After what happened at the Valley, where we dominated the first half and then the red cards came leading to us losing it – today kind of felt the same in reverse a bit – without the red cards of course! We do not win many at Pompey.

Ratings:

Cooper 8/10 - Along with Bindon our man of the match. Still was a bit indecisive at times – particularly crosses/corners but kept a clean sheet and made a few good saves and some big ones at the right times. The ones from Alli – the one across him at 0-0 was a vital touch and then the late one (did it clip the post too?). He made several other expected but still made the saves. Too many have gone in past him so the fact he made saves, even if expected was a positive. He was given way too much to do. His kicking was better today too.

Seriki 4/10 - Thought he really struggled today and the first time for a long time (maybe all season?) a winger has got the better of him. Alli beat him 3 or 4 times first half and was the main outlet. He seemed to be too far off him and slipping and sliding around (wrong boots?) and we were getting done down this side. Improved after the break and a few forward runs after seeing little this way before the break. Looked tired today.

Burrows 4/10 – Another who struggled but his has been more the norm – unlike Seriki. He did not get beat as much as Seriki but his overall touch and defending was sub standard again. Gave his man way too much time and he was loose in possession. Did not get forward anywhere near enough. Just looks totally bereft of confidence.

Bindon 8/10 – Our best player outfield. He was solid and composed throughout and the only one of the back line who looked like he was winning his battle. Used it well and came out of some tight spots with good skill. He has really improved since his struggles early season and seems to be getting more confident. Still think he can be bullied by a more physical striker but did well today against Bishop – who can be a threat.

Tanganga 5.5/10 –Patchy again. Few tackles and clearances but seemed at full stretch again too much and too many headers/clearances did not escape our box. He seems to get drawn into a lot of pulling and grappling – both ways. Constantly giving free kicks away when he goes up for corner (yes, I know refs always give them to defensive sides but do not continue grappling as any 50-50 almost always goes to the team defending). Another who is still up and down with his level of performances and needs to find some consistency.

Phillips 6/10 – First half more like a 2.5/10 but thought he was far better second half. He began looking slow and leggy – with him and Soumare having no control of the game or the ball. He was behind his man and rarely closed down or won a tackle. We never had the ball and when we did, it was loose touches. After the break (and when Peck came on), he improved hugely. Got on the ball, won tackles and started to impose himself – using his physicality. I felt he was the standout midfielder on the pitch after the break. A daft booking near the end (2 in 2 now).

Soumare 2/10 – Dreadful. I panned Arblaster in the week for giving it away, losing out physically and not being able to close down or run back. Soumare gave as bad a performance. I do think Phillips was not much better to be fair before the break but Soumare was so sloppy on the ball with it bouncing off him or easy telegraphed passes going astray. Technically he is hopeless (occasionally we see a flash of skill or run forward but it is more the norm for an aimless pass or for him to get caught as he is dawdling). Arblaster is nowhere near ready but Soumare is no better- this means we have an issue as not sure Phillips will play every week or full games – making the Rothwell sending off even more stupid and costly. However, whilst Arblaster might come back after a preseason – I have seen enough of his lad. He is nowhere near good enough – we have seen the odd decent game but mostly he looks out of his depth.

Hamer 5.5/10 – A mixed bag really. He got on the ball early and had that effort where he went for goal and a few other bits on the ball but mostly not in the game. Another lazy swipe out at a player saw him booked -as he cannot or will not chase back. Second half he did improve for a spell with a shot wide and some moments he got on the ball but not sure we saw enough of him? I expect a player of his quality to really put his stamp against poor opponents but he drifted in and out. There is an argument we sit too deep and means he has to go looking for the ball of course?

Brooks 6.5/10 – First half not a threat really. He was unfortunate with a few fouls but we were mostly defending and actually I will say he needed to go and help Seriki against a pacy winger and left him a bit exposed. Second half, he improved and get helped more defensively and also was more of a threat seeing the ball down the side more. He had a few runs and a shot not far wide and then anticipates the cross and gets the winner – carrying on his excellent goal scoring form. Quickly become a key man in the side.

Cannon 3/10 – Not in the game at all. He lost 9/10 duels and totally ineffective. The only thing I will say is he had no service and we could not get up the field. I still expect him to challenge and compete physically but he did not and they had it easy. He did not press either and was just anonymous – probably touched the ball the least of any starter on the field.

Bamford 5/10 – Had our only half chances first half with a shot blocked and a header and looked the main outlet to hold it and offered more than Cannon – but did not link with him at all. He had a few chances second half but took too long on one ball and then should have done better with the cross shot. Weird though, as whilst he was not at his best, we still looked far less likely when he went off – till the late goal and our threats going forward seemed to stop without him occupying space or a defender.

Subs -

Peck 5.5/10 – Did ok in that he got his foot in a few times and moved it around better than Soumare. At times his passing was laboured or inaccurate too though. We did look better for a spell after he came on till the 70th minute mark and the only spell we controlled midfield. Surprised he was dropped but looked leggy in the week and maybe needed a rest before the derby where he always seems to be up for it.

O’Hare 6/10 –Made a difference in that he got on the ball, dribbled and drove forward. A few step overs did not come off and some balls not quite finding their target but he at least gave us a link and then the goal he played an intelligent ball to find Campbell.

Campbell 5.5/10 – He did set up the goal with the run and cross and was a big moment so gets credit for this. Outside of this felt he looked languid and did not work hard enough. He offered very little till the winner actually and we lacked the threat we had shown for a period before he came on. Still, deserves a lot of praise for making the run and getting the assist (even if the keeper should do better).

Arblaster – Only on for last minute and stoppage time. A few clearances away.

Hoever – Messed up a clearance barely getting it out of his box as we tried to hold the late lead.

Manager: Wilder 5.5/10 – The subs made a big difference. I had no idea him changing a midfield that looked weary and well off it – even O’Hare has been poor the last few games. It did not work but neither did the midfield in the week – so hindsight is a wonderful thing. I thought the whole side sat back and were 10-15 yards too deep. We looked scared to commit men forward and seemed to just want to sit in and defend. It was a negative approach against a poor side and with better finishing/more clinical final balls – then they would have probably been a few goals to the good. We lacked intensity and seemed to not press but after the break, we did improve and had a good spell but then we sat off again and seemed like a point was the most we would take (and even that would have been a stretch to say we deserved it) but another couple of his subs link to set up the winner – so he deserves praise for that. I am concerned that the away performances seem to be miles off what we are showing at home. No issues versus the better sides (we played well at Millwall oddly!) but we almost seem frightened to press and try and get bodies forward. We do not seem to tackle or win the battles though and Pompey so much space. We must be better to start games and not rely on poor sides not taking chances before we wake up. I worry again that we are not well coaches as we had no plan to progress the ball up the field and were just hoofing it or hoping Bamford got on scraps. Without individual play from Brooks or Hamer, there is not structured to create chances. The performances have been quite inconsistent recently and to get anywhere near the playoffs we are going to need far better from us individually and collectively to on the run we need- albeit we got away with it today – we will not in other games.

Portsmouth – In the pre-season predictions I think I had them to be comfortable in mid table. I reasoned that after staying up with something to spare last time, having a year of experience at this level and some additions, they would be able to progress – in a division that looked weaker. I like Mousinho, the manager too. I think they have never really got going and of course maybe I forgot, the likes of Wrexham and Birmingham were not going to be down near the bottom end, so less wriggle room. Some of the players who stood out last year have struggled to make an impact, they have had a few injuries to key men (Bishop and Murphy) and kind of got stuck down there and now in a real battle to stay up.

Today they were the better side and should have won the game. To not even get a draw was a hammer blow. They did have chances but maybe should have created more clear-cut ones from all the play they had. They did not really have many where you thought, ‘they must score.’ However, they had enough play and of the ball to be a few up. After the break, they could not sustain things and seemed to have dropped off but then they did have a late push and so the breakaway would have been devastating.

They have so many players out injured and a few more went off today. For all these issues, I saw enough today to suggest they will pick up the wins but are in a real fight. They are stronger at home and still had some good results down at Fratton Park but will not be easy but I do see the likes of Oxford and Blackburn (even Charlton) being worse, so I do expect them to stay up. Just.

Opponent Man of the Match – Segecic was lively and Adams also put himself about but Alli – on loan from Luton, certainly looked to be far better than the winger we got from there! He was direct and positive and had at least 4 or 5 good chances (should have done better with a few). He looked tricky and fast and always caused us problems.

Opponent Weak link – Schmid makes a bit of an error for the goal so might take it for that alone. Thought Bishop was poor today and never seemed to be on the end of things. We played him well

Referee / Officials – James Linington. Both games he has done in recent times – Coventry and Oxford away (last season) have been losses. Not sure I can recall too much from either game that was controversial? Today he was frustrating and another who did not know whether he was letting things flow or trying to clamp down on foul play. The bookings he gave were correct to be honest but Brooks was penalised twice when he won the ball and yet Seriki got nothing for similar. He seemed to lose a grip when a few started pushing and shoving second half and made an awful game into something that seemed cynical or niggly when it wasn’t – just two poor sides. The big moment did go for us though. Replays showed the lad did catch Seriki as he went to clear but it was a sort of contact on contact (I thought at time had had given a penalty!) and it was a bit soft perhaps but as I said earlier nice for one to go for us. If I was a Pompey fan not sure I would be happy.

And, I safe-stood in the Milton End today with pretty vocal and enthusiastic Blades fans. Nice to see you all.

That line up was possibly experimental and possibly to give Soumare last start out in midfield.

First half we looked unlinked, clumsy and just not likely to score or even threaten. Pompey pressed, were patient and were unlucky with the disallowed goal. Soumare and Cannon were so bad, we might as well been nine men against their eleven. Soumare is now just a midfield bollard. He is useless, offers nothing and we are deluding ourselves to think he is even Championship level. Cannon just cannot cut it. Runs about, gets nowhere. We were so disarmed without Peck and O'Hare which happened after the break and for 20 or so minutes we looked better. O'Hare turns and runs at opposition players and has them on the back foot, Peck isn't great but is a world away from Soumare. Brooks and Seriki were off and on and Burrows just doesn't push up enough to make a partnership happen with Hamer. Bamford was always the target and worked his socks off. Cooper had a good outing but his distribution again is a bit rubbish.

Good, dirty win and three points in the bag. I will be in the Bramall Lane Upper next Sunday to watch us relegate and humiliate Wednesday. We need to show zero mercy.

Agree on Soumare, absolutely dreadful footballer.
With Jairo coming back soon and Rothwell available after Cov we can leave him out of the squad entirely for the rest of the season.
CW said Peck had a slight injury and didn't train for a few days, in fact he travelled down separately last night so understandable he didn't start.

I don't disagree but football is mysterious. we played as badly as we have all season but got 3 points. We played better against Middlesborough and got none. My concern is the variations in performance. But if you do a deep dive, it is our pass completion that is consistent - it is terrible, we give the ball away consistently too much, the difference in results is down to how the opposition then use it. Increase pass completion and we are a different team but that has to be done by better passing forwards not just knocking it backwards and sideways

It was a very clear foul on Seriki for their disallowed goal. Their players didn't really protest at all, which is a clear giveaway!

Phillips 6/10 – First half more like a 2.5/10 but thought he was far better second half.

You're not a maths teacher, are you?

If he gets 2.5 for the first half, he needs 9,5 for the second, to give an overall average of 6.

However, as I don't want to appear a pedant*, I'll let it go this time.

* I am, of course, a pedant but please keep that between us.

Very good post.
Our ball retention in possession has been awful recently.
Boro showed us how to do it in the first half when they passed around us for fun while we consistently coughed up possession.
Our goal today came from possibly the only time we strung three passes together in their half.

Funny old game innit? Even though we won I'm more pessimistic about our PO chances than I was pre-match. Clearly second best to one of the relegation favourites.

Previously we'd matched Millwall, deservedly beaten Ipswich and Oxford and looked decent in losing to Boro by the odd goal. How can our performance drop so much with what on paper looked a decent side? There seems no logic to it. CW / AK must be bemused by our ability to play well one match and shit the next.

COH must start when available from now on is my only take from this performance. Oh and we almost certainly aren't making the playoffs. Still, if we relegate the pigs and finish comfortably that's a very good season.

Soumare & Cannon are utterly dreadful footballers.
I seriously doubt that anyone at the Lane would admit to actually watching them play (in the flesh - not on a screen) and recommending we sign them.
Neither appears to have any "football" acumen.
Without exception they make the wrong decision with the ball and in Cannon's case he's hardly ever where he needs to be so barely touches it all game.
I'd be happy to see neither of them again but with the sunk cost of Cannon's fee ...
I'd choose anyone ahead of him ,
Bamford , O'Hare , Campbell , Ogbene , even Ings and definitely Oné if we'd kept him.
We need to cut our losses and get shut of him in the summer.
I think I'm right in saying Soumaré is on loan so he'll be gone.

Bought the game on sutv and at half time was mystified why I'd wasted $20 on one of the worst first half performances this season. Never mind having to watch Soumare and Cannon. "If" we miraculously get promoted we're obligated to buy Soumare but would assume he'd be shipped straight out or we'd settle!!

Peck and O'hare made a difference coming on and Seriki being punished by Alli all game affected our inability to attack on the right most of the game.

Total agreement about Cannon. The coaching staff surely have major concerns about his football brain? He gets in the wrong positions constantly and never is ready to receive it. He is so weak physically and not that fast. He has been 'ok' in a few games the last few months but if we can get a couple if million for him this summer, it's a no brainer to move him on.

Getting rid of likes of Shackleton, Matos, Cannon, McGuiness and Chong has to a big priority this summer. All 5 are dreadful footballers who lack the pace, physicality and technical ability to even be competent Championship players.

Least Soumare, Ogbene, Ings, Hoever will leave automatically.

Throw in Davies x 2, Bindon, Phillips and Mee leaving- then we could lose 10-15 players if we move on some of the 5 above somehow.

That cuts the bloated squad but does not really lose anything meaningful.

Keep Jairo if we can but then it has to be quality over quantity this summer to compliment Cooper, Seriki, McCallum, Tanganga, Peck, Arblaster (if fit), Brooks, O'Hare, Bamford being the spine to build on.

Means we need a CB, a CM and CF as 3 key additions and then some young/exciting players to come in. We need to move away from the veteran big wage incomers as they have no sell on value and without parachute payments we simply won't be able to afford that type of player.

I expect Hamer and Campbell will move on this summer. The former as he only has a year left and we will get what we can. The latter I think Wilder has had enough of his lack of effort and inability to sustain any kind of sustained physical application.

It seems to be that we let the home side dictate the game and just hope to snatch a goal that we hang onto.

Thats the tactics away from home for years.

I've no idea why
We didn't at Charlton up until the sending off

Spot on - I agree completely.

There's some legacy players hanging around, then a load from the Selles "trolley dash" just before the window closed. Pretty much all of these need moving on.

Shame about Tom Davies, but his body isn't up to playing professional football, so it's modelling for him, in the dressing up box. 👍

'Trolley dash'...😅😅😅...love it !

Cannon surely can’t have been bad? I’m told he’s much better when he plays in a front 2?

Oh no wait…. He’s just sh*t. Please let’s all agree and move on

Completely agree, and the tossing away of possession has been a constant for a few years now. I understood it in the Prem as we weren’t good enough against top players & athletes, but even last season when a team pressed us we weren’t capable of keeping possession, playing through the thirds, taking possession under pressure etc. Who was the last player who could take possession under pressure in midfield for us and keep it, Sander? Then Coutts before that? We have some decent technical footballers but sadly I don’t see that we’re coached to be comfortable under pressure and we haven’t been under Wilder since version 1.

The first half yesterday was criminally badly, playing 4-4-2 hoofball against Portsmouth! I watched on a Pompey stream & they couldn’t believe how bad we looked, that we were just lumping hopeful balls into channels & playing for second balls against a team who are happy for that. Very similar away performance to last season where the opposition don’t have the composure to put us away & we manage to nick one.

I only do about 5 away games a season, so it's a hard question to answer.

I'd say this season Charlton, W@dnesday, Blackburn, Preston, Leicester.
Preaton we were decent for 20 mins, leicester half hour. For the lions share of both those games we were on the back foot.

Yup, let's all write off a 23 year old, with a big ttansfer weight round his neck. Loads of experts on here agree, so it must be the thing to do.

Oh, and by the way, when Billy came back in 2007, he was 24 but he was obviously shit too.

Is there anybody else that you want to run your critical eye over?

"Trolley Dash"
Can someone remind me which players Selles signed, either permanent or on loan please. I rather lost track at the time.
