Report in The Star has details of how much each club paid towards policing last season.

Sheffield Wednesday's home games proved easily the most costly to police, at more than £430,000, though the Owls did provide nearly £200,000 towards that sum. Games at Bramall Lane cost almost £170,000 to police, but Sheffield United actually shelled out slightly more than that, resulting in a net profit of nearly £4,000 for the force.

That can't be fair can it!?

It seems unusual that United are paying almost ALL their police costs whereas other clubs just pay a contribution.

Wonder what the reason is?

I reckon the contribution United made had conditions and was the clubs choice.

E.g. We'll let you open the BL lower tier but on a condition you pay £xxxx for the police.

On the face of it is does look like United have had an unfair deal, but I'd bet it's more likely The Star have got their figures wrong. I don't see how Wednesday's policing costs can be that £430k while ours are only £170k.

I suppose you would have to know both sides of the argument and we don't...so not sure how we can reply

Perhaps they bump the costs up as they reckon they need more police on duty as it's so much closer to the City Centre and requires a larger presence.

That would be the default sensible call but....

They played DirtyLeeds, Brum, Uddersfieldx2 (incl play off semi), scabs, Derby etc etc etc.

Apart from Millwall on a quiet Tuesday neet we only had Shrewsbury, Walsall and Fleetwood's crews to contend with.

Simple, they have three times as many fans as us

It goes in the jar with the semi final money, the hotel deeds, the Walker transfer fee etc etc etc.....

It's not so much the costs as the relative size of our contribution. Wonder if it's to do with the steel barriers etc? Did we pay for them?

Can't complain too much about that, about £7k per game, peanuts really. As for comparison with the pigs, who cares, fuck 'em.

I'd be careful saying the star report anything wrong around here... ;)

Have to pay the police extra for going to run-down areas?

Must be the cost of all that bastard netting.

Surely you mean post-Hurricane Irma, what with everything under water.

Round there it'd be called Hurricane Kyle, as a homage to the TV show of choice round those parts. Except the Hurricane would be less noisy and annoying than Jezza ;)

A significant proportion of the policing budget will be to police away fans, so whilst SYP may have made a profit off us, the rest of the country certainly won't have. For just about every team in league 1, the Blades coming to town is the biggest they see all season, apart from Bolton of course, but they are just so much bigger than us that this is to be expected (they were in Europe 10 years ago you know).

Would have thought it would only cost a few coppers :)

I think we may have inadvertently stumbled across the reason for the measly away fan allocations.

I can never understand how the numbers can be so high. To over simplify the maths somewhat...

Average copper's salary = £35k ???
(it's less for average PC's, but that allows for some more senior officers)

Add a bit for NI etc - so let's say £40k all in

That's enough extra to cover overtime rates I reckon

Working days a year = 260

Cost per day per copper = £150-ish

So at £140k a match that is either...

The best part of 1,000 coppers (ridiculous)

...or...

A lot less coppers and a lot of money spent on ???? A new police van every game?

As for the £430k figure for Wednesday... ??? Are they funding police helicopters??

I'd love to see the maths.

Rant over.

The helicopter was probably in the control of the perv who liked to fly around watching people having sex. I'm surprised he didn't crash the thing watching thousands being fucked by Tunaman on a regular basis.

I don't undersatand how they're allowed to make a profit from us?

Surely the Police is a non profit making organisation?

Will that money they've made from us be deducted from policing costs this season?

I think you've misunderstood the policing costs. The figure quoted was per season not for each match. My understanding is that the council picks up the tab for policing outside the ground but the club for policing inside the ground and on club premises. You've also got to factor in the cost of ancilliary equipment such as horses, barriers, video cameras, riot equipment, riot vans, tazers and overtime payment for reinforcements from Durham Police, especially when you've got 150 visitors from Fleetwood to contend with.

I queried the cost of policing an event and was told that the police Charge a'hiring' fee when working on a commercial or private property. Hence the financial split between United and the police authorities

Somebody has to buy their doughnuts and match day doggie bags
