I agree with an earlier poster about Billy Dearden - for those old enough to remember he was a fabulous centre forward. But then again, that team put together by the Late John Harris was a joy to watch from back to front. Harris rated Dearden as his 2nd best signing after a certain TC. Just to add a link to our present manager NC, Clough senior paid John Harris the ultimate respect by playing his European Cup winning side when they came to BDTBL for the Harris testimonial match - think they stuffed us 7-1 from memory.
UTB

6-1. But they were playing against out 1971 promotion team rather than the current team. It was in Oct 77 I believe, which was before Forest won the League, never mind the European Cup.

Hao Haidong, his signing sounded so far-fetched and ridiculous that I thought he'd never get a game but credit to him he got about 20 minutes.
Wasn't he China's all time top goalscorer? And when we had the pre-season tour in China he was their footballing god. Great signing.......not at all for the publicity at the time :tumbleweed:

It was 1-1 at one point after Woody fired in a powerful low shot past Peter Shilton

Dellas struggled as a defender in the 442 system and when we played a high line, he struggled playing against pace when the opposition have a counter attack. He was a lot more comfotable in the sweeper system which was more popular in Italy and under Otto Rehhagel's management in the Greece National team

Indeed. For me though, he was the best option at central midfield that we had at the club at the time, where his pace was less exposed and he could use his ability on the ball more. Not to mention one hell of a shot on him. It was depressing to see him out of the team while the likes of Hamilton and then Hunt were played there.

Although i thought he was a good player before he came(my avator)i never thought he would be as good as he was for us,he was class. The only suprise was that he only had 2 caps for Greece. He is now assistant manager at AEK Athens so nice to see he's doing allright for him self.I don't know many blades that ever slagged him off if any.

If you mean players that played better for us than expected i'd have to say Leigh Bromby (2004-2008) i remember his first game away at Burnley warnock made out as though he had to throw him in as had no other option i thought he had a good few seasons and an excellent debut. Never realised he played more games for us then them down the road.

Players that played for us and did better than i expected away from bdtbl has to be Billy Blunt has a good record away from us but really was poor playing for us. Also Clive Mendonca has to get a mention thought he was pretty crap at the lane developed into a decent player.

I remember when they signed TC from Watford I think. I'd never heard of him and wondered what we'd let ourselves in for.
I soon found out. Can anyone remember the fee? Also Will Carlin, I thought he was passed it but he was great. Also thought Hockey was over the hill. Got those 2 wrong. But then I know nowt about football. :)

Tracey, Kelly, Mel Reece, Ian Bryson, Tony Agana, Brian Deane. Pretty much any Bassett signing came with low expectation to start with.

Spot on, Harry Bassett was a great man manager, a Mr Motivator without the Colored leotard!

Reecey(RIP) could have stopped a cannon ball in his all too short, but outstanding time with United. Likewise.Simon Tracey must have been one of the best keepers in the league at that time.

Kev' Gage,Dave Barnes,Jocky etc; all played out of their skins with Harry at the helm.

'Eck even Johnny Gannon's passing was Platiniesque at times in the early Nineties!

Other teams really cacked it playing at t'Lane in those days.

Speaking of Borbokis and Dellas, can anyone remember the name of the third Greek we had on trial around that time? I think he was a winger and the word was he was easily the best of the three. For whatever reason the trial came to nothing in the end. I don't know if it's because he wasn't all that or something to do with terms.

Dmitri Markos?

Some that I haven't seen mentioned ,

Chris Armstrong: I think without his awful setback he could have had a career at the top level

Paul Devlin: Was our best player at one point. He took a while to get going and was sent out on loan before he became a big player for us

Keith Gillespie: Thought this was a very poor signing after seeing him in a few performances against us but he turned into a cult hero

Chris Morgan: I recall many Barnsley fans saying he was a liability and they were glad to get shot but he cemented a pace in all Blades hearts

Peter Ndlovu: Didn't hear much from him after his Coventry days and I thought he was just another on his way down the football ladder

David Tuttle ,looked absolute shit for Spurs at the Lane ,I was gutted when we signed him and he was quite good.

Chris Armstrong is a great shout. On his debut he flew shoulder first flying into the advertisement boards to chase a over hit pass, that summed up his character. I hope he is doing well out of football. Where did we sign him from again? Oldham?
