Not exactly KenMcnaughtsNuts - the comma serves the same purpose as "and" and "but" (and a few other words) in conjoining different clauses within a sentence. It's for exactly that reason that a sentence should never start with "and" or "but".

in my opinion, the comma is a free-spirited old soul, and can be used whenever it feels like it should be there!

I see the comma playing more of an anchor role in the middle of the sentence. You don't want your commas wandering about all over the place, otherwise you're going to leave a big gap down the middle. Some favour the continental multi full stop system, which I myself have dallied with occasionally...... however, you can't beat the old fashioned Capital-Comma-Full stop formation in the English league..er, language.

is this the feckin comma society now or what?!? excuse me whilst i pop into m&s for a brown cardigan! i likes me commas, where i likes em. in those immortal words by the sex pistols: if that makes me a comma anarchist, then so be it grandad!

anyhoo i have a quadruple barreled player. jan-aaaaage fjorrrrr-toft!

This chap with the double barreled name always seems popular at the Lane.
