Paul Coutts, is he really the reason why we collapsed from top of the league to the disjointed side we were tonight?

There is a real case for this, nobody has bossed the midfield since he broke his leg, not that he was a match winner outright but more the way he controlled the tempo of the side and dictated the play, the way he brought the wing backs and centre backs into the game, he was the drum beat of the side no doubt.

Wilder has used Lunny, nice touch here and there and not a bad player, he signed Evans who is tidy on the ball but does not lead and dictate the play like PC and Lenny who looks way out of his depth at this stage.

Cause and effect, the cause is Coutts injury, the effect is a mid table finish.

I think team form had dropped a touch before the injury anyway. He's a definite loss but I think it's overdoing it a bit to say his injury has cost us more than a few points.

He's a very good player but absence makes the heart grow fonder.

Miss him loads. But he's one (key) player. Players get injured. You just hope the person in reserve can step in. They haven't .

Yes

The problem is in January we brought in three players who are no better than what we already had at the club. Buy all your players from the lower leagues and that is where you will eventually end up, seen it many times before at SUFC it is called taking the cheap option and hoping they all come good.

100% correct and well done to the ones that knew it in the debate a few days after the Burton game.

To the one's who thought we had a solution in the club - you were wrong.

The question is: what does CW & AK do now? Still plenty of games - can they pull a rabbit out of the hat?

UTB

I think pinning it all on Coutts is a bit short sighted. He's a massive loss for sure but nobody can say how different things would have been with him. I think we would have picked up more points for sure but he wouldn't have compensated for the awful performances tonight for instance

Coutts' absence is certainly the key reason, and why I find continued talk of play-offs baffling. We've won, I think, four league games since mid November!

I'm sure I'm just jumping to conclusions, but Fleck is playing like a man who was denied a big money move...

Picking up more points for sure as you say would have us in the top 6 looking at top 2 wouldn't it?

Yeah fair point. I just don't like it when fans put so much emphasis on one player being missing from the team. Who knows what form Coutts would be in now?

You can only assume, but the form he was in before the injury and the form the team was in seemed to link together. We certainly would not be worse off with him in the side. Also the pace of the side seems slower without him.

I agree with you but if Fleck had got injured instead of Coutts and things had gone downhill then we would have all been saying it's because Fleck is out.

All I'm saying is I think the injury to Coutts has been a major factor in our poor form but not the only one.

I agree there are other factors that equate to about 0.01% The rest is the Coutts injury.

The O/P is Spot on,i couldn't help thinking we'd look 10 times better tonight if Coutts was playing..that player who is always available, starts us off from deep, then joins in as we progress up the pitch..Good point by BW about how he linked well with the wing back and and attacking Centre Backs to work the space in behind down the flanks...our current midfielders don't do this apart from maybe Fleck.

Coutts brought more than just his footballing ability to the team. He's charismatic and this makes him a popular guy amongst his team mates.
You play football as a kid or at any level and there's always that one person who's team you want to be on. For us, this is Coutts.

Spot on.

Nothing says ‘going for it’ like signing 3 midfielders from league one and loaning a striker who has been long term injured!

Three from a lower league is two too many. Too many disruptions to the team IMO However it is a gamble replacing players who between them did so well last season.. If you are not prepared to take a risk after due consideration, you may miss a VARDY. HAH HAH PIGS but you would be very fortunate if signing three lower league players they were all a success.
