Film, television and music personalities, sporting stars and names as well as well-known former players have been revealed as the new Patrons of Sheffield United’s re-launched charitable community programme the Sheffield United Community Foundation.
The line-up features film and television star Sean Bean; Beautiful South front man Paul Heaton; Dronfield-based singer Dave Berry; Sky Sports News presenter Charlie Webster; former Blades and England players Brian Deane and Alan Hodgkinson plus fans ‘favourite and former captain Bob Booker; boxing trainers Brendan Ingle and Glynn Rhodes; Sheffield-based food and health expert Lyndsay Graham; United Academy-based and China’s most successful snooker player Ding Junhui and two-time world squash champion Nick Matthew.
In addition, renowned television star and Monty Python star Michael Palin has accepted a role as Friend of the Foundation.
Mark Todd, the recently appointed new head of the Community Foundation, said: “We have brought together a remarkable line-up of new Patrons all with strong Sheffield connections with the aim of developing our community work across the city region.”
United’s community programme has helped more than 130,000 individuals in recent years and under its new name has exciting plans to grow the charity and its diverse work in the communities of Sheffield city region.
A celebration of the unveiling of the new patrons was held at the home game against Swindon Town on 13th April 2013.
Glyn Rhodes MBE, Charlie Webster, Ding Junhui, Lyndsay Graham and Alan Hodgkinson MBE were special guests of the Foundation and represented the other patrons at the formal unveiling.
The club’s Chairman, Mr Kevin McCabe, The Chair of the Trustees Mr. Mike Blundell, SUFC Operations Director Dave McCarthy and the Head of Community Foundation Mark Todd extended their welcome to the Patrons on behalf of the club and the Foundation.
The Patrons were introduced to an appreciative crowd prior to the kick off and were there to witness a first win for caretaker manager Chris Morgan:
