SHEFFIELD UNITED goalkeeper Paddy Kenny has lodged an appeal against his nine-month ban for failing a drugs test.

Kenny tested positive for a banned substance, ephedrine, after last season's play-off semi-final against Preston North End.

A Football Association disciplinary panel last month accepted that Kenny did not take the drug to deliberately enhance his performance but inadvertently consumed it via a cough remedy.

Now, with the support of the players' union, the Professional Footballers Association, Kenny is seeking to have the ban reduced in order to play a bigger role for the Blades this season.

If he fails in the appeal, which is set to be heard in 10 day's time, Kenny will be available for just two league games at the end of the season before his contract expires.

Manager Kevin Blackwell has refused to shut the door on Kenny's Bramall Lane career but the Blades may also be entitled to cancel his contract.

Under FIFA rules, Kenny, 31, has not been allowed to train with the Blades – or any other football club – since last summer.

The Blades, meanwhile, have confirmed yesterday's Yorkshire Post report that revealed striker Richard Cresswell suffered broken ribs against Doncaster Rovers.

Don't think he's got a prayer personally.

It'll be interesting to see how Cannavaro is dealt with, particularly with the World Cup next summer.
