Edit: I've just realised what you're on about. I was talking about getting promoted out of the Championship as many times as we were relegated from it. So using your own logic, we're a Premier League club.

To be clear I'm not suggesting living beyond our means.

Just to sharpen and smarten our recruitment and look beyond Dover like Leicester did.

With that said and mention they and the other team in Sheffield have trophies to show for, whilst we haven't won anything of significance for nearly 100 years.

We are the biggest team in Europe to have never played in Europe.

I was bored one day and did an average of our league positions since we first entered the Football League in 1892 and our average position is 28th which in today's money would put us 8th in the Championship.

Our record pre 1934 brings that average up as we'd spent the previous 40 years in the First Division. It's been a bit more of a rollercoaster since then.

We’re all maybe a bit too close to our beloved Blades, to see what others can see about us. When we got promoted we were all irked and angered by the pundits “lazy” less than complimentary predictions, about our first season back in the big time. Even though we were arguably the best team out of the 3 promoted clubs. Everyone, without fear of contradiction had us down to finish rank bottom in the Prem. Why the lack of respect, we all thought?We are a traditional big city club, with 30k+ fans, a famous old ground, a great manager and a very unique style of play...What isn’t there to like?
But unfortunately our own perceptions of this grand old club, have been clouded in recent years. We’ve spent too many of those years languishing mid Championship to mid League 1 level obscurity. But as much as we said we hated it, we all revelled in our big fish in a small pond status.
We may think of ourselves as a potential Leicester or Southampton. But due to the shoestring manner on which this club has been run over the years. We will always be viewed by many, as novelty Premier league visitors, in the same category as Barnsley, Huddersfield, Bournemouth and those perennial overachievers Burnley.

Upper Championship team. Have been for 30 odd years regardless of actual positions on the whole.
Ground, fan base and geographical location all point to upper Championship.
I can live with that too, as long as the players are giving their all for the shirt I'm content.

Southampton are an interesting case. In the Adkins years, they had a very productive academy and a billionaire owner. That gave them relative success for several years. Then the owner died and a couple of years later his daughter sold the club on to owners who don’t seem to want to put their own money in. Their academy is going through a bit of a dry spell.

So, each season is becoming a relegation battle. It’s one that they’re winning but they only need one season where two or three of the promoted sides stay up and they could be in bother, particularly if Hassenhutl moves on and they don’t get the next appointment right. And, without investment, that’s probably all we can hope for. A longer period in the PL and maybe a sniff of a cup final or Europe before the best players in that side move on to bigger clubs. But I’d take that over 20 years of not even being in the top flight.
