In 2006 we went up with Reading. In 2007 we came down without them. After another year in the Premiership they joined us down here in 2008.

But who looks like the more recently relegated side? Reading have had a fire sale which would have seen them flog the tea lady if they could have got a few quid. We, while having to ‘re profile’, were still in a position to spend big on Ched Evans. And look where both teams are. We are in the play offs. Reading are in the relegation slots. Last night we beat them 3-0.

And what are people saying? We have Len being Len, we have people analyzing Blackwell and Wards body language for signs of a bust up, we have Quinn and Monty being lambasted to such a level youd think theyd been caught looting in Port au Prince.

Last night's team included Bunn, Fortune, Taylor (and Stewart), Monty, Harper, Squinny, Evans and the very poor signing Cresswell, who have all been slated on here as not deserving a shirt in the last couple of months.

It is as it always has been, the dissentors have the loudest voices and those who have a half full glass are accused of not having ambition or not caring enough, accepting what's served up.

Of course we can improve, of course everything in the garden isn't rosy, of course a 3-0 win doesn't make everything right but despite everything that's wrong with the club, we're in the play-offs and to be honest, that's more than most of us could have expected (and predicted) in the early months of the season.

Since our 4 game losing streak in October/November, our league record since then is P11 W7 D3 L1 pts 24 - i.e. averaging more than 2 points a game, which is, of course, automatic promotion form. We have also not conceded a league goal at home for almost 3 months.

Yet to read people on here, anyone would think we hadn't won since Noah was a lad.

what a load of bo!!0x...... it aint empty but its emptying faster than its fillin !

We have Len being Len

Len's a spent force, either that or I've matured a lot since the demise of BU and at my age, that's unlikely.

I can't get worked up about what he says, he doesn't even seem as if he means it like he used to and there was always a small grain of truth in what he said (don't tell him I said that mind).

I think my point is that it's all so deflating at the moment and that may be a hangover from the capitulation at Wembley. I feel as though I'm going through the motions without any great expectations and I know I'm not alone. It's all so uninspiring.

I relaise that in the end United will always let us down, but we've been tantalised in the last few year, which is preferable to dropping down to Division 4, but ultimately unfulfilling.

But I'm not giving up :)

Apathy is the unfortunate bi-product of supporting a club who's manager is a firm believer in grinding opposing teams down in order to get a result.

Why is it that all the teams that have come to the lane recently have looked crap? Is it because they are or is it because as said ^^^^^^^ Blackwell has got united grinding them down and making the opposition make the mistakes to let us in?

We've started to create a lot of chances recently and as much as people slate him i've been impressed with Evans. His all around play is coming on great. I think if he gets a couple of goals, ideally in consecutive games then his confidence would be high. He did very well in a very poor Norwich side and they would've loved him to sign for them. I think its confidence. At least he's getting a decent run in the team

Been moaning about the loan system, evr since the end of last season.

It's a sop to the premiership clubs.
They can snap up all the best players/potential players, and to keep them sweet when they get brassed off at not playing they loan them out to mugs like us, ( but what's the option ? ).
Then they either take them back & play them or use them as a deal elsewhere.

Ones that particularly brassed me off were Halford for us, and when Man utd. loaned Frasier Campbell to Hull , he did great helping Hull to promotion , then they pulled him back & used him as a swop in the berbatov deal with Spurs, leaving Hull high & dry.

The same will happen to us if we ever get promoted all the loanee's will be held to ransome & we'll have to rebuild virtualy a new squad.

Anyway, about KB's releases:-

Yeah he really is gonna come out on radio/TV & tell everyone, we've got LOADSA MONEY & lookin to buy isn't he ?

He is also goin to let Reading know whose playin & whose not, he's done this before & I hope he keeps on doin it, keep the buggers guessin.

Come on guy's grow up, stop whingin when he's trying to use the spin in our favour

I posted this yesterday before the game at about 4:30'ish

I note the so- called injured players , did play , as I suggested in my origonal post

I also note that we are now being linked with Buying Leon Barnet ( note the buying ) as I also sugested yesterday.

Why all the doom & gloom 6th place & playing well & looking to BUY players

In the 2 Kevins I trust UTB

Readings demise has been shocking.

You're just looking at what could have happened.

If you want to play that game.... lets look at Newcastle and WBA, 2 teams that have come down and look good to go back up.

A bit of both.

In the last 6 home games we've only played 1 top 6 side - Forest - who are also the only team we didn't beat - and they played for a draw.

We beat 2 teams in the relegation zone (Peterborough, Reading), and 3 mid table teams (Boro, Palace, Preston).

We have done better, no doubt about that, but we'ver either played poor, middling or unambitious teams. Mind you, 6 games with no goals against - and 2 penalty saves - is not to be sniffed at.

Agree with you there Munksy. UTB!

But i think its a fact of life that if you have a player that isn't quite good enough you send him on loan then when he does well sell him to the highest bidder.

Ie. Lee Hendrie & i know for a fact Billy Sharp wont sign for Doncaster. He'll be sold to the highest bidder or swapped for a player to aid our own development.

Maybe Frazer Campbell said no to Hull and chose Spurs, i know i would

I think we'd just like the see one top signing (for our level at least).
Routledge for example would of picked up the crowds and my own personal favourite Bale.

Now I know that maybe we can't pick up these wages which is fair enough but what a lot of fans see is that £10 Million of talent has gone in the last 7 months and can't understand why some isn't being reinvested.

That may just be the position we are in, and I don't think there are many fans who want us to spend beyond our means but I think £3 million being released would actually excite the fans if spent on the right players (Bale, St Ledger etc). To be honest it doesn't need to be a outright purchase, I think if we could of gotten known quality players on loan again some of the doubter would have to pipe down for a while. Welbeck has gone to PNE, Naughton is sat doing nothing at Spurs, and it looks like Bale is also destined to be back on the bench now the ANC is over. A well known talented youngster I think would give the crowd the pickup some of them need.
As I said it doesn't need to be a signing but I think some clarification from the club reference the transfer funds received would also help set realistic expectations for some of our fans.

Another McCabe Q and A wouldn't go amiss to be honest, as stated at the time of the original meeting a bi-yearly Q and A would be of benefit to all concerned.

We tried to do the same. But we appointed Robson :loopy:

what a load of bo!!0x...... it aint empty but its emptying faster than its fillin !

Surely the point of the thread is that our glass is exactly the same as every other glass in the whole league, they are all emptying. Some have emptied and aint going to get a top-up for quite a while (Reading, Coventry, Norwich, Ipswich, Charlton, Watford and plenty of others). Some had the glass taken away from them (Southampton, Bournemouth and now Crystal Palace to name a few). Whilst others may have the glass totally smashed (Portsmouth). So in a comparison with others in a similar situation (look at how many I've mentioned have had a flirt with the PL in the last few years) we are doing pretty well.

Then again, BB we are merely preparing for takeover so no problem ;)

Let's just see though if one (or even both) of those teams don't go up this season, you can be assured that all would not be rosy at these two clubs. Throw in the fear of losing the parachute payments after season two and they would be 're-profiling' just like we have, Reading have and countless others.

I think all in all we've done very well to keep on an even keel, whether we have enough to get ourselves promoted is another matter.

All I'm saying is, why only judge it to Reading who have gone downhill?
Why not also look at others?

Or could it be that our fall from the PL is a lot different to any of the other clubs, mainly because of our off field antics, also the fact we are guaranteed further payments from WHU, we've had a fire sale with our best assetts too to keep money flowing.

IMHO the Newcastle comparison does't stand-up, thaey are a one team city, with average gates in excess of 45,000.They have been bought & re-sold many times lately , and the guy incharge now, wanted to get rid , as the costs were stupid, but he changed his mind when things began to pick-up. However with Forest also now pushing, will that change ?
The big test will be West Brom, will they succeed this time, and if they do will they stay up more thanone season ?.
I really dont think the 'THROW MONEY AT IT' scenario works, the litany of those that have tried & failed are there for all to see

I really enjoyed the game last night, of course there were two or three crucial moments that went our way but I was honestly expecting to come on here last night and see an overall postive response. I thought we were the better team throughout but the scoreline flattered us a little.

I think this is right:

P'Boro 1-0
Palace 2-0
PNE 1-0
Boro 1-0
Reading 3-0

Everyone says the Championship is unpredictable and everyone beats everyone etc so on that basis to score 100% in your last 5 home games without conceding is a wonderful achievement and something we never even came close to doing last season. I would be interested to see how many sides this season have won 5 on the trot at home, maybe Newcastle? But I imagine they probably didn't do it by being rock solid at the back.

FORTRESS BRAMALL LANE IS BACK MINUS THE FANS.

We haven't, you missed the Forest game - although that was another clena sheet of course.

"The big test will be West Brom"

I think West Brom are the perfect model to copy for a club of our size although it does rely on being promoted back every other season or so.

They [both club and fans] take relegation on the chin and don't complain cus they expect it. The fans have fun in The Prem and don't expect to finish higher than 4th from bottom. The chairman runs the club well and keeps a top 4 side together when in The Championship.

It might not go down well with some Blades doing it this way and be frowned upon as a lack of ambition if the club don't 'go for it when in The Prem but I bet its more fun than grinding out results.

Ah yes, cheers.

What's wrong with the Premiership striker we picked up for less than £1/2M who managed his 6th goal in 12 starts last night

We've already had our top signing who's weighing in at £1m per goal.
Cresswell was poor last night and Evans was just Evans. Bit more running around these days, same end result.

This is a good post. We're pretty much comatose as a club at the moment.
The best players are all sold, the young ones coming through are sold, the replacements are Championship fodder and the overall impression is one of inexorable decline.
The scoreline has kidded a few people from last night, a few of whom probably didn't see what actually happened on the pitch, but the tailing off in support is a sure sign that fans sense the lifeblood being drained.
A complete financial meltdown, administration or relegation would help galvanise us. Otherwise, fewer and fewer people are going to care about the rank mediocrity on show week in, week out.

"What do we want?"
"A complete financial meltdown"
"When do we want it?"
"Now!"

Who knows, perhaps we'll get it over the next year.
As Trigger summed it up, it's essentially very boring watching United at the moment.
