Been speaking to a Derby fan today who reckons we will go straight back down because we don't score enough goals and Billy Sharp will be useless in the Championship. Told him that we were top goalscorers in the EFL last year and Sharp was the top goalscorer in England but it didn't make a difference. He said we don't have any other goal threats but then didn't have a reply to Freeman getting 11 goals from RB. He also thought it was stupid I was willing to bet my savings, place at uni and Large Mendonca 's house on us not going down next season. The thing is, I'm never that optimistic with United and think we'll finish between 13th-15th next season (hardly exciting is it?) but can anyone actually see us going down with Wilder? I don't even think we'd have got relegated last year with that team in the Championship.

Has anyone heard any other ludicrous comments on our chances next year from other clubs excluding the pigs?

My uncles a Sunderland fan and he thinks we will go up in the automatics.

Just had 20 quid with a barnsley fan that we won't finish below them.
Like the list Ricky has just mentioned- if I knew a Bolton, Millwall or Burton fan I'd do the same.
So by that logic in thinking at least 5th bottom.

He must be right about not scoring enough goals, we must have been close to the worst scorers in all 4 leagues with 92 goals last season. Easy to come to that conclusion when you ignore facts.

I have contact with people from around the country and most are quite complementary.

They think we'll finish comfortable mid table and some even suggest we could be dark horses to sneak into the playoffs.

Regards Sharp doesn't have much to his game (he lacks pace and physicality) apart from finding the back of the net (which is the main part).

If we play the ball directly to his feet,he's good at converting half chances but if we struggle to set him up then I think he'll struggle. It all depends on the players around him.

Last seasons squad is better than what Burton, Barnsley, Millwall and Bolton have to offer now. That's without this seasons recruits and more to come.

Then there's the Wilder factor.

More chance of Fred Tunstall and co admitting Che Adams would be our 2nd best striker currently than us going down.

Very different league that were coming into, but those statements can't be thrown at this side on previous evidence
In the entire football league:
- most wins
- fewest defeats
- Most goals scored
- top goal scorer (Billy)
- highest goal difference
- most points

Yeah they can argue that we need to do it in the Championship, but it's a strong statement that we were promoted on. We didn't just scrape through the play offs

Bang on!!!

Although I don't think we will go up, no way will we get relegated, just off the top of my head I think we'll finish above Bolton, Millwall, Burton, Barnsley, Brentford, Preston (now that Grayson has gone) and Ipswich Town.

Would anyone take 4th from bottom and guaranteed not to be relegated now?

Must admit knowing the Blades I'd be tempted but on the other hand with this squad bottom half could be seen as a disappointment.

Of all those I have to say that finishing above Ipshite would give me the most pleasure.

To answer the question, no. I rarely discuss football with the locals and when I do, it's normally them asking me what I think we'll do rather than them just saying 'you'll go down'. If someone made such a definitive statement I'd assume they were trying to wind me up or they genuinely know fuck all about football. Either way, I wouldn't waste my time arguing with them.

Five games into last season, I didn't appreciate Wilder's skill as a manager but last season on top of the headline statistics I saw his reactions to:
Not being able to win
losing unbeaten runs,
Surprise defeats
getting battered (4-0)
having nothing to play for but pride (after being crowned champions)

and I like what he is made of, if he had to build a squad from scratch I'm sure we would still have a team that would survive the hostile environment of the Championship.

It won't be an easy season, it never is for any promoted team but I expect you to stay up this season

Fwiw I also expect Derby to bottle it again

I wouldn't because I genuinely think we'll do well this season and at the worst we'll be low mid table in my view. I think Wilder still wants two or three more players that will arrive in the early stages of this season once Wilder knows who is sinking and swimming - like he did with Lafferty and Ebanks-Landell last August. So we could yet be stronger come the end of the window.

I quite like it when other fans are doing us down as it means they fear us, the pigs are doing because the genuinely do not know what to expect as we all don't but they will have seen last year and thought, "Fuck they carry on like that and we could be in trouble!" Wilder is no mug and will know it might be a hard road at times but play as we did last year and fear no one, it could mean we get a couple of tonkings in the process but you live a learn.

I'll tell you how it is...

Very occasionally...and I mean, "not very often", a club comes up from the League below, blessed with an array of talented footballers that should never have been plying their trade in the lower league in the first place. They have all the momentum of a promotion behind them and they add a bit more with new, quality players, that all have the same thirst for success as the team that just blasted their way out of the previous division. They stick with the same tried and tested formula of hard work, team spirit and fearlessness. They go to win every game. They have some setbacks but they are still riding the crest of the wave. The self-belief overcomes many obstacles. They take the new division by surprise and find themselves in a position that most people would not have thought possible.

It has happened to a few clubs. Norwich and Southampton spring to mind. If we take Southampton as an example - they had players like Lallana and Lambert in their squad. Unheard of at the time and dismissed as "not being good enough" for the huge "step up" to the Championship. But they were - and how!

Despite the fact they had a gibbering idiot of a manager in Adkins - they still managed to plough through to the Prem.

Now...

That gives me hope!

I live in Glossop surrounded by Man U and City fans, they don't believe in football outside the premier league. The championship is merely a mythical land.

Same here! Except replace City with Chelsea. They don't comment on the Blades because they know nothing beyond their bubble.

The people meet at non league games though, vast majority are complimentary of the Blades and I find them to be much more knowledgeable.

I also live amongst Cov fans, but the less said about/to/by them the better.

fear no one That is the major difference I saw last year from the dross from Weir/Clough/Adkins. It took me back to the old days when we didn't bother who we played at t'lane, they were in for a hard time. Hence returning season ticket holder this year.

If United do this and go all gung-ho for the first 10 or so games, we might get a head start and that would allow us to consolidate (or even press on) for the rest of the season with a bit of a buffer behind us. A bit like we did in 71/72 only that was in a division higher. If it doesn't go to plan then we can tighten up anyway, after all there's 46 games in a season.

I spoke to some Derby fans t'other week who thought we'd do oreyt...funny old world eh...

Derby fans normally come across as really down to Earth and realistic but I suppose there will always be one or two who go against the grain, look at Brian the Blade
