Beginning to build it up in my mind in terms of what I'm expecting. Interesting to know what others think.....

Moore
Basham Wright O,Connell
Freeman Coutts Carruthers Fleck Stevens
Sharp Evans

Could see Thomas and Duffy being used as impact players from the bench initially. I imagine Lavery will be used in the same way. I expect Carruthers to get regular starts at that level. Looking at that lineup I would expect at least one more centre half (possibly two) and another midfield option. Any other signings will be for cover or to add depth.

Sorry to say, but I think Freeman might get found a few too many times next season to make the position his own.
Hope I'm wrong though.

Leon certainly deserves to start ahead of Ched at the outset.

I don't expect to see much of Jake Wright, excellent and admirable though he was. I think TF intends to replace him with a key signing at centre-back.

I think Tufty has settled on his chosen ________ in midfield. The other two might be more ------------- right now?

The issue with picking teams is usually

Good offensive teams tend to be poor defensively.
and good defensive teams tend to be poor offensively.

Next season I expect Wilder to continue being positive and trying to win games and I do expect us to have a few 3 or 4 nil wins, just like last season BUT teams in the Championship will have more ability to pick us off.

When we play positive but lose 3-0 then what will be the fan reaction?
I expect plenty of criticism advising Wilder to stop being so naeve and to concentrate more on defense.
It would be a shame because I prefer matches where we give it a go even if it does mean the occasional 3-0 defeat. Got fed up of the cagey 0-0 at half time, try to win 1-0 performances under Nigel Clough.

I still expect 4 new signings to come in before pre season starts

1 back up keeper
1 centre half
1 attacking midfielder
1 centre forward

And then a one in one out policy after that

Have you got Fleck and Stevens wrong way round?

If not, why play Stevens there. What's the thinking?

It's the 3-5-2 formation with attacking full backs playing as wingers.
Stevens is a left back who is great going forward especially regards crosses into the box.
Last season we had some good attacking threat from the right side with Freeman where as Laferty wasn't as good offensively but he did seem defensively better than Freeman.

Signing Stevens gives us an attacking threat down to left when we play the 3-5-2 formation.

4-1-3-2 nailed on:

Moore
Brayford Wright O'Connell Stevens
Basham
Coutts Fleck Carruthers
Sharp Clarke/Evans

You could easily interchange that with 3-5-2 with Basham dropping back and Brayford & Stevens flanking the midfield three.

I've also got a suspicion that EEL will come into the fold for Wright.

Yep - assume that's how he would be deployed.

Based on his scoring record (1 in two seasons at Pompey) we won't be firing in goals from both wings, but I get the impression he is more about creating and crosses well... also sounds like he does this without his defensive responsibilities being impeded, which is much less true of Freeman. Could be a good balance though with the two wing backs, looks a great signing.

Edit: note I have literally never seen the guy play, all based on reading about him, clips etc.

after what's happened this season can't see Freeman being dropped to make way for Brayford

It's a tough one but I think a few of us are going to have to accept that 3 or 4 of the team who finished last season are not going to be starting next season. In my opinion Brayford gives us more options by playing attacking full-back, wing-back a la Freeman or centre back should the need arise. He's just a class above, that's all.

I'd just like to see a goalie arrive, I think we're very weak in that position.

We need at least 2 decent centre backs if The Beard is sold off.

Carruthers has shown nothing as yet to suggest he deserves a start in the championship.

Simon Moore is Championship quality but we definitely need a better back-up than Long to keep him on his toes.

I think all three of those are decent centre backs. I just think they need a bit of help (Champions nous). All good enough to play at that level but collectively maybe not a good enough trio..... if that makes sense?

One of the most interesting pre seasons ever, a real contest for the starting eleven on day one.

Reckon that's our strongest line up with our CURRENT players. Still think there be plenty more signings. Also still the brayford situation is still to be decided. IMO if he wants to stay he's far too good to be letting go

And we'll all be singing "He's here, he's there, he's every fucking where".

No many of you rate Thomas then no?

So, we sign a fullback that has just had a great League 2 campaign, and everyone decides that he gets in the team ahead of Lafferty, who's just had a great League 1 campaign. He'd better be good then, because that left hand side defensive partnership of O'Connell and Lafferty has been solid.

I don't. Especially that back three. Of those, only JOC will be in the first starting XI. Brayford isn't big enough and Wright will be phased out.
