I watched the C5 highlights of Saturdays league 1 games and was interested to see Northampton's Matt Taylor get sent off against Scunny. It was an almost an exact replica of the Basham sending off, with two players going for a ball before Neil Bishop did his rolling around like he had been shot act.

As with the Basham red card I am sure that Bishop's cynical reaction prompted the red over a yellow. I know there will be those that say it is part of the modern game, I hate it and just see it as dirty cheating to con referees.

Thats the beauty of football Fulwood, its a game of opinions. I may have rose tinted glasses, but saw Bashams challenge as a yellow. Regardless, the writhing about of players like Bishop, who then hop up and run off is calculated, cynical and garbage.

All it would take would be a message from the big wigs at the top, to say that diving is done and punishments are in place, shirt pulling is over and people need to man up, feigning injury won't be tolerated and perpetrators will be shot.

Prime example is/was Arjen Robben. He had the ability to dribble around the entire opposition defence and score but he'd rather "trip" over one of them to win a free kick or penalty

Anyone who went to Scunthorpe will tell you hes not alone and it wasn't an isolated incident ,they were at it all game ,it got to the point of being embarrassing and the weak cunt referee bought it. Also sneaky words to the ref ,I know its common but Josh Morris was at it all game. Scunthorpe will get found out and drop like a stone soon.

Retrospective red cards and bans for players found guilty of diving by TV replays, same with yellows for shirt pulling at set pieces etc (with the "extra" yellow able to add up to a red and a ban if they get booked during the game) would soon see a drop in these offences. Sure, it may lead to a few weeks of mass suspensions etc, but surely long-term it would be good for the game?

True unfortunately. I would extend it further if I could, to make rolling around like you've been shot then jumping up as soon as the red card is out carry an immediate red card and 5-match ban. It's disgusting that players get away with doing this, with the sole intention of getting a fellow pro sent off and suspended.

whilst I agree with your post and many others on the subject I must point out that the yellow card Basham deserved would've been his second, obviously meaning a sending off anyway. At least it would've only been a one match ban though instead of the three which he no where near deserved, he was a tad late that's all and their player is definitely a cunt.

I didn't think either were a foul ,no fan of Deadmans but players make it so difficult for them ,and with all the new rules virtually outlawing tackling it is making the game tedious and dull. Nothing like a good tackle to liven a game up and as Johann Cruyff or George best said ,I didn't become a great player by not getting tackled

Only slightly late by Basham, but late it was. He was also late when Michael Brown over reacted at PV a while back, but once again Bash was later of the 2 tacklers as he was v Scunny.

It left the ref with no option....or perhaps the camera lies.........

Indeed it is all about opinions - would appreciate your opinion of the still, taken from the sky footage on the day.
Doesn't really need an opinion really when the ref is presented with a player off his feet, studs out and about to tackle the ankle after missing the ball.

...but thats the whole point. He was there when he got there and was to late. The freezeframe above shows why it was sadly a merited red card and most refs would feel the same in the current rules. Like others have said, I wish more was let go but refs are marked down if they dont follow what they are told. The fact Wilder did not appeal showed even they did not think they could overturn it.

Sadly it is a red card all day long. For all the criticism of the Scunny lad; I watched the Matt Taylor tackle and it was a horrible tackle. Much worse than Basham's.

Sometimes a player gets done badly. He has got done twice. Maybe he has dived around a bit but they were both poor challenges. If neither player goes in so wrecklessly they dont get sent off. Both players had their feet off the ground and were late/high.

I am in the minority probably on here I know but not sure the refs in either game had any other option?

Whatever people's opinions Fulwood all we ask for is consistency. The tackle on Bash was almost identical if not worse by the Scunny player less than 5 minutes before he was sent off. The ref was close to that one too but the difference was Bash didn't roll around. Officials will always make costly mistakes and nobody expects them to be perfect. Would be nice if they occasionally had the bollocks to hold there hand up and say they were wrong though. They would get so much more respect rather than the contempt they do
