So near yet so far.
Reminds of a supposedly true story of Fred Trueman.
He sent the first delivery of the over to a new batsman who promptly tried to drive him and there was a loud click followed by the ball nestling in second slip's hands
"Owzthat?" says Fred. "Not out!" says the umpire.
Fred sends down the second delivery and the batsman goes on to his back foot with both legs together, plays a defensive stroke and misses the ball which hits him on the pads plumb in front of the stumps.
"Owzthat?" says Fred. "Not out!" says the umpire.
Fred sends the third delivery down and it is a scorcher that rips all three stumps out of the ground and sends them cartwheeling all over the square.
Fred turns to the official and says, "Nearly 'ed 'im that time, umpire!"
