Just listened to Jeff Winter on the under the cosh podcast, interesting comments about refs subconsciously giving decisions in favour of players they are getting on with on the pitch.

I've noticed in the games this season that our players have developed an appalling billy big bollocks attitude towards refs, the main culprits being the likes of McBurnie, MGW, Baldock, constantly in their ears moaning about every decision.

Can't help thinking this could be the reason we are not getting a lot of the big decisions such as the MGW penalty on Saturday.

Something hecky needs to address perhaps

I’m not defending it as I don’t like to see us behaving like that, but is there an element of us catching up with what other teams have been doing to us for ages? I always felt we were too honest under Wilder and that cost us, particularly in the Prem.

The ref should just book them all as soon as they do it. Captain should be the only player to talk to the ref.

There’s an element of the game being allowed to do it. Needs stamping out at all levels.

Book a handful of players and they will stop doing it

It’s only “cunt” and “cheat” they aren’t allowed to say isn’t it?

Over on the other side of the world Aussie Rules is worried about falling numbers of referees. They say they are 6000 short at all levels. Referee abuse is a big reason.

Their solution? Abusing the ref causes a free kick and the ball to be moved forward for the other team 50 yards. A draconian penalty. You can talk to the ref, you can query things, but abuse and dissent is out. And the rule is being enforced.

I think something like this could work for our game too.

Can see what you mean on that point, we were definitely too honest in terms of trying to win free kicks in the Premier league

10 minute sin-bins for dissent are already in place in the bottom 2 levels of non-league, which suffer from this problem as much if not more than the professional leagues, but the referees rarely give them out.

Who would've thought that a solution designed to solve a problem enabled by refs not taking control has flopped because refs aren't taking control of the solution? 😂

I would rather lose games and get relegated than con the ref or harass the ref and win.

It’s part of the game that I hate and it’s almost driving me to stop watching football completely. It’s why I don’t watch much premier league or champions league football

I’ve been thinking much the same and not helped by the inevitable “ The referee’s a wanker “ from the crowd any time he makes even the smallest decision which doesn’t go in our favour (blatant penalties excepted of course )

Referees are professional. If they are "subconsciously" giving decisions to players they "get on with" then they are bent. Simple as that. They are paid a healthy amount to be impartial. Let's not make Winter's remarks out to be anything other than what they are. Which is an admission that some referees are corrupt, and knowingly favour certain teams based on who's playing for them.

It's disgusting, and it's corrupt, and any ref that agrees with Winter should be sacked, and prosecuted for match fixing. End of argument.

For example. If Dean Whitestone "gets on with" Scott Parker and/or half the Bournemouth squad, to the extent that he "subconsciously" couldn't see Morgan Gibbs-White being quite literally kicked up in the air, then he should not be refereeing any match in which Bournemouth are playing. Because he is biased in favour of that team.

They had something similar in the Prem, early 00s? Ball forward 10 yards if there's any arguments. Not sure why they stopped doing it.

I can remember Man U winning a free kick about 30 yards out, then the opposing team arguing with the ref about it.
Referee took the ball forward 10 yards, then Beckham pleaded with the ref to put the ball back to the original position as that was more in his range.
He still scored the free kick from 10 yards forward though.

Our players complain to the ref too much so we don't get decisions. Bournemouth were at the ref after every tackle. Parker badgered the ref all game, his arms, legs, mouth going everywhere for attention .He craftily had his staff move up to keep standing on the sideline to block the linesman's view. Yet they were not disciplined by the 4th official. Parker intimidated the officials into his back pocket evidenced by the butcher of a tackle that was clearly ignored for a penalty. While our bench seemed subdued ,they rarely react to calls. I wish Hecky was more animated he just seems to be able to take everything in his stride.

We are shit at complaining at refs, when other teams do it they seem to get more decisions when we do it we get less.

It's up there with diving and wasting time on the list of the dark arts that we just aren't very good at.

Agreed ...... Bournemouth were on a par with Premiership teams for diving and play-acting last week and the referee, plus linesmen, were utterly incompetent.

I'm delighted that we aren't "divers" !!

Put yourself in the position of the ref, if you've got some prick moaning at you and calling you a wanker after every decision, your going to think fuck you and use any opportunity to give decisions against them, it's human nature nothing to do with being bent

McBurnie is particularly embarrassing with it he throws himself to the floor and has a go at the ref nearly every time a ball is crossed into the box because of his inability to get into the right positions

What's the point in moaning, never seen a ref change his mind on a decision through a player whingeing.

MGW (got that right this time) had a good go earlier this season (diving) prob lost us the game

Refs are human beings.

Whilst I can be ultra critical at times and I find it hilarious the attitude that they're 100% impartial all of the time, I also find it embarrassing as a football fan how our referees get treated compared to many other sports.

The way Man Utd under Ferguson went about treating refs was utterly shameful imho.

I liked Wilder's attitude towards refs but the fact remains that bigger clubs do get more decisions even with VAR.

I never understand why coaching staff berate the 4th official about decisions that the on field referee has made. I know the officials can communicate via their headsets but it all seems rather pointless and possibly just a means of getting things off their chest. If I watch Harrogate Town, I always stand behind the dug outs and it's interesting to see and hear how much interaction there is between the 4th official and coaching staff. With some teams the 4th official needs to have the patience of a saint!
