Another good, convincing win for us as we take firm steps toward the playoff zone. Given when Slav was here this position was unthinkable, it's real credit to Hecky and the chaps for beating a team who comprehensively penised us at their place earlier in the season. Many of us - me included - have to eat humble pie over the appointment of Hecky. It seems last season's makeshift temporary appointment was just a stop gap and there were not real efforts to allow Hecky to bring his own ideas in and optimise the 5-3-2 into some sort of challenging formula. Would we have survived if we had this season's team as of today just as Wilder was sacked? Maybe not. The gulf in class between PL and tonight's opponents was very evident. West Brom, under Steve Bruce still look a typical Bruce side - lumpen and unfluid. They have a long way to go and I would be surprised to see them in the top six by May given tonight's poor showing.

Our lineup was the typical 'one of surprises'. No place for Goode, back comes C3PO, back comes Hourihane and a great comeback for Furious George who must have been eating raw steak on the touchline watching Bogle steal his boots. We started dead cagey, being pressed back into our half and final third at times and unable to break out. Every time it did, West Brom capably mopped things up and came back at us but credit where credit is, we weathered the brief storm. Our first really came from nowhere but it was a typical Billy goal where not even half a chance will do for him to find the net. Fallowfield, pay attention. He did make a bollock of his second chance and was given offside for his disallowed but his acumen as a striker, his experience in making defenders work hard and his eye for a chance is still razor sharp. At the other end Furious pulled off a fucking breathtaking last ditch tackle and then WBA are down to ten after a daft lunge by Livermore which, if Flecky went for a bath for that one he did a couple of seasons ago at BDTBL, then he should go for that. We're not good against ten though are we? Second half it looked like they'd been allowed a player back for the first twenty and we again struggled to stop them coming forward. We simply failed to make 'the hole' on the pitch count and outpass the opposition. If we did string passes together at times the final one was overplayed (Norwood) or ended up in no man's land out wide where WBA just jockeyed us.

Second goal however was borne of some nice play with better passing and we managed to get the ball into an area where MGW was moving to attack and probably score and Billy simply crashed it into the net. Fallowfield take note. After that WBA just tried to pump the ball long to Carroll who'd tried and failed to bully out centrebacks. We managed the game out to a pretty convincing conclusion.

Foderingham 6/10: Not a massive amount for him to do once again but pick low shots off the deck. At times a bit iffy with punches but in those moments they did sent their big fellers up
Baldock 7.5/10: Great return for George even if he was well out of position. Plenty of energy and a brilliant goal saving tackle
Robinson 6/10: Steady game with some key headers and interceptions when we came under pressure and less errors. But he's still not JOC
Egan 7/10: Put himself about against a big strong lad like Carrol and in my humble opinion won most of the battles preventing him from having any effect
Basham 7/10: Sometimes ace, sometimes (rarely) a bit lacking. Was skinned by Grant a couple of times which was unusual
Bogle 6.5/10: Not quite as industrious as of late. Think he was hiding an injury for much of the game. Still works well with players around him but tonight he lacked a bit of sparkle. Picked up a needless yellow
Norwood 6.5/10: Still playing quarterback but now has his Hollywood Ball programming updated so less of that and more movement. A pretty 'okay' game from him
Hourihane 6/10: Sent in a great cross for Billy's disallowed goal but didn't impose much even when they went down to ten men. In that situation, players like him should be free roaming and providing the option to exploit the 'hole'
McGoldrick 6.5/10: Not a vintage Didsy performance. He did link well with all around and calmed the play somewhat but he's losing what vestige of effect he used to have. Hope his injury isn't serious however. He is best 'off the bench' in a match these days
N'Daiye 6.5/10: Has plenty of capability but at times can be wasteful.
Sharp 7.5/10: Got goals from 50% of the clear cut chances he had and that will do. Drops a whole half mark for the one he hit straight at Johnstone

MGW 6.5/10: instantly involved and eager to muscle his way back in. It's nice to see competition in the squad and him involved in it and the creation of goals.
McBurnie 5/10: Was 'okay' but nothing spectacular and with less impact than the last game. But at least we now know he has stopped shithousing
Berge (unmarked) Don't think he touched the ball (quelle surprise)

Great win for us. Three points, now within spitting distance of a decent finish.

Generally agree with most of that apart from your assessment of Didzy’s performance , which I thought was one of his best for a very long time .

A minor point but Berge was on the pitch for less than two minutes, he did a successful pass, therefore with his 100% successful passrate deserves ten out of ten!

Ageee with most of that apart from Ndiaye who seemed to be off the pace tonight, compared to his usual self. As always I enjoyed the read!

Seems hecky has been strategising options in training to play gorgeous George and beautiful Bogle in the same team and tonight was the night.

All I saw Carroll do was give fouls away and fall over so Egan worth an extra point surely.

Good win despite not much coming off for our playmakers ndiaye and mgw. saw it out well which shows the improvement in confidence. Lot of competition for playoff spot but we are right in it. UTB.

Good take. A harder game than I thought it would be and we did make it a hard job for ourselves, but I'll take three points thanks very much.

Payback time after the shit-show at the Hawthorns
West Brom were the better team for the first 20 mins or so,but once we got to grips with the game it was a well deserved win
Another good summary 👍

Good report other than the outrageous slur on Berge. He actually had the very last touch of the game. just shows how little attention you pay at times.

And it was a very good pass as well I'll have you know . CL standard.

Good read

Agree about Hecky , isn’t he doing a great job . Really surprised with team selection but instead of reacting in a he must be crazy mode you now think he knows what he’s doing all will be well - it’s called trust which he’s earned .

The highlight for me apart from the goals and George’s tackle , was bash picking up the ball in the 2nd half with a player on top of him trying to shepherd him into the corner then beating him and carrying it at pace to the edge of their penalty area. He made a couple of ricks but the man is a machine . His fitness and attitude is amazing .

Great win - ground it out - still need a midfield shithouser but it’s looking interesting

Heckingbottom 4/10 - F@kin mental team selection and we were getting dominated until WBA gave us the game on a plate

Foderingham 6/10: Not much to do

Baldock 6/10: His recovery saved a goal but that goal was because he is a RB playing LB which is heckys fault and why we were poor until WBA gifted us the match

Robinson 6/10: Decent game not much to do i still shit myself when he gets the ball we lose our fluidity with him instead of Ben Davies

Egan 7/10: Did well against Carroll

Basham 8/10: Bloke never stops give him the contract

Bogle 6/10: Poor by his standards he looks injured IMO sure he went down against Brum also

Norwood & Hourihane 5/10: Both completely over-ran until the red card then played well as they had the extra man and time on the ball im not sure they can be trusted together against teams who get in our face and press us the first half we were very poor mainly down to these two not controlling the game IMO

Some of our fans are like puppies with Norwood wow he played a simple 30 yard pass but did it with the outside of foot he is amazing when in fact he cant tackle or play under pressure

McGoldrick 7/10 : Played well without been amazing , unfortunately that may be the last we see of didz this season

N'Daiye 6/10: Quiet game for him i think we expect too much from him considering he has only been playing mens football properly for a few months

Sharp 8.5/10: Has been outstanding the last 2/3 games keep it up barn door bill

Overall 5.5/10 = We 100% got away with it today a slice of luck today a jammy goal and a red card gifted us the game they looked the better side until then

Good post

I agree with nearly all that

It’s not your post game posts that wind people up it’s your pre game posts

Stop attention seeking with them and join in the real debates

Nowt wrong in having a different slant , that does cause debate . It’s the attention seeking rubbish that goes with it

Pomps,

Thought it was a strange match.
I half expected a typical Bruce display when Newcastle and Sheff Wed came, where they sit back, defend in numbers, frustrate us, then try to catch us on the break. However for the first 20 minutes WBA pressed us high up the pitch, they dominated general play and we struggled to keep any possession. The saving grace was although WBA were dominant, our defence was solid and Foderinghasm hardly had anything to do.

Then we score out of the blue....against the run of play. After the goal their heads dropped a bit, they stopped pressing us as much and we settled into the game much better having more possession. Being a goal behind WBA had no choice but to attack and it became an open entertaining game but once their player was sent off....the West Brom heads dropped even more....and from that point the match was effectively over.

It was one of them nights that whenever West Brom were near our goal the ball never fell for them.
When they had a half chance, they rushed their shot and some shots were nearer the corner flag.
or there was a deflected shot but it defected gently into the arms of Foderingham.

For a change there didn't seem to be too many neves in the stadium, the players didn't seem nervous either.
Where as the WBA players looked to be going through the motions when attacking, they'd clearly lost confidence.

In the end it turned into a comfortable and easy win.

Maybe this should have it's wn thread but

Coming away from the match we were chatting about this team compared to Wilder's promotion team.
We all agreed that this team is average to good and doesn't seem anywhere near the level of Wilders promotion team.
We also all agreed that the standard this season in the Championship is surprisingly low, much lower than the Wilder season.

Then someone said "maybe we are better than we think".

Remember when we had 6 consecutive seasons in league.
In that 1st season in the Championship, the standard seemed incredibly high, much higher than league 1.
Maybe we've just become accustomed to the PL level, so in comparison the standard seems really low in the Championship.

Onwards to Hudds on Satdi.

More seriously, I think West Brom are better team than they are showing atm and will improve under Bruce. Norwood and Hourihane are nice footballers but struggle against sides that get in their face. We've now played 2 of those teams in our last two games and come away with 6 points so encouraging. We now seem to have a bit more grit than earlier in the season.

Our second goal was a really good goal, where we had dragged them all over the place and ended up with at least 2 free players in their box as a result.

Furious probably put in the best LWB performance of the season. 1 assist and the tackle is probably worth an assist as well

I think the players we have are far far superior to the players we had in the Wilder promotions season

I think wilder made the players perform levels above there quality and heckingbottom isn't right now to the same level as wilder did

However Hecky is doing a top job if we can get a more consistent performance with that intensity every week we will be right up there

Comparing this team to the Wilder side, there are some obvious quality differences. Henderson & JOC for starters. Fleck and didzy were very strong that season and we haven't anyone playing at that level in those positions this season.

Duffy was terrific but MGW and Ndayie can match that level I think and probably offer more goal threat.

I suspect the league standard isn't that different overall. The same inconsistency as ever

Overall 5.5/10 = We 100% got away with it today a slice of luck today a jammy goal and a red card gifted us the game they looked the better side until then
God help you if you think alehouse hoofball and a high press makes a better side. WBA no idea other than lump it to Carroll and hope something drops, get long throws and stop the other team playing by any means. Not hard to see why they have had 6 red cards this season, a awful team to watch.
Maybe we weren't at our best but we still made the best chances Johnstone by far the busier of the keepers, a night off for Wes.
A fairly decent take from pommpey apart from from the low mark for McBurnie who did little wrong unless snatching at a chance late on drops him a full mark and the little dig at Berge who was only put on to give the crowd a chance to give Sharp the ovation he deserved.
