Going to start with the most obvious of all, we wouldn't have won that game last season. It would have been a 1-1 draw or a 1-0 defeat. Either way we would have conceded.

Today we struggled to break down a team sitting with 4 in defence, 1 defensive midfield and a strict 4 infront of him. Struggled for the 60 mins we were in neutral that is. Then we went into 1st gear for 15 minutes, won the game, and back into neutral we went.

Two well taken goals. A well worked set piece, great pass from McEveley and finish from Sharp, and a superb goal from McNulty after Sharps work. 2-0, game over.

They came to frustrate us. With that set up we were never going to hammer them, which in fairness they haven't been since they dropped into this league. They lose by the odd goal, and that's been playing 4-4-2 - today they had extra defensive protection and it showed.

We could have had a few, if we really stepped it up we would have. But we have played a high volume of games lately and we have one coming Tuesday and then a 6 pointer in 7 days time. Understandable.

Player summaries would be as follows:
Howard didn't really have anything to do
Freeman had a good game, took it by the scruff of the neck
Edgar could have played that game in his slippers
McEveley was a notch above their strikers. Good apart from a few wasted balls early on.
K Wallace settled down very well after his first 10 minutes. Great turn of pace and troubled their defence running from deep.
JCR should have stayed wide in the first like he did in the second. Stripped their full back every time.
Baxter bossed it for the second time in a week. The one player we have who will take a risk passing.
Basham marshalled his old club brilliantly.
Adams was average. Nothing went right, but it happens at that age.
Sammon should have scored without a doubt, he'll be gutted at that but he had no service otherwise.
Sharp quiet first half but was ALWAYS showing for the ball. Second half another masterclass. Goal and assist.

McNulty has been taking lessons from Sharp. Touch has improved massively and WHAT a finish.
James Wallace made us solid but he ain't a right sided midfielder.
Woodford is getting better every game. Looks a bit clumsy but he isn't.

Can't really say any more than that. Boring first half, better second. No one played really badly but there's only a few that deserve a heap of praise.

Just to add, we would have lost that game last season. Don't know if I've mentioned it?
Maybe things are changing. Sheffield United FC - the charity may be no more?

We're going to have to get used to sides coming here with 5 in midfield for a point. We need another winger for me, replacing Murphy is vital. Still need another centre half, but Wallace has convinced me from seeing him Tuesday and today we don't need anyone else at left back. Let him and McEveley fight it out while Bob's back.

2-0 win, back in the top 6 3/4 clean sheets and four wins. Can't complain.

You have to take in the heat too, i was sweating in the stand, imagine what the players were like on that field. You can't play at full pelt for 90minutes in that heat.

It was crazily humid. I bet they absolutely loved it when it started pissing it down.

OP sums the game up pretty much as I saw it with one exception, Howard actually made two very good saves. Was in line with the second one and I doubted he'd get there, but he did thankfully. Very happy he's back in the side.

Did anyone see the blatant block on the Blackpool defender to give Billy enough space for his goal? Obviously the lineswoman and referee were looking elsewhere at the time. Nice to have a bit of luck for a change.

theres going to be games where its frustrating playing teams that employ nigel cloughs tactics of nullifying midfield and hoping to win on the break -
Adkins rang the changes and it paid dividends

Here's the way I look at it.....

we were saying that on the way back, definitely had an effect.

Decent summary of the game I saw, the heat had an effect as well as has been said. Lot of square balls reminiscent of last year, but then we killed off a fairly poor side (but who gave it a good go considering),which was noit so remisniscent of last year.

We still need a winger for creativity though, we can't rely on Che all season would be unfair to him. He's bound to blow hot and cold.

A winger who can play either wing and get to the byline would be perfect. Paul Anderson has gone to Bradford he would have been perfect.
If not, Bradley Dack.

Baxter bossed it?
I appreciate that he tries to pass the ball forward but for every one good ball forward there is 5 misplaced ones. If he is fit enough then Wallace as to start with Basham for me.

You mean someone like Jamie Murphy ;) no we havn't replaced him yet

Couldn't disagree more.
Thought Baxter was good, two games on the bounce. The one player we have who'll try different things. Vital against sides like these although I do really like Wallace.

I think you've about nailed it there for me Danny, more or less how I saw it..not easy for Bash and Jose when out numbered in the midfield...Jose did 2 or 3 loose passes, but he was trying to make things happen, moved the ball quickly, while Bash did a good job off the ball, got blocks and tackles in,but also the odd lose pass, and mainly sideways...Thought JCR was key to,opening them up..got past the FullBack and in behind, and also the introduction of Sparky...Billy Sharp seemed to come alive after that, and we started to turn them and get in behind.
As you say,it's not always going to be easy to break teams down at times at the Lane with one up and an extra man in midfield, but we eventually did,and got a well deserved win, despite, not been at our best..

:(QUOTE="Esablade, post: 816384, member: 12742"]Not sure about Sammon being gutted...he's a big fish in a big pond...sure he'll rise to the occasion again...[/QUOTE]
I had a bet on him to score 1st goal 4/1 :(

Never mind the heat we
Just lacked urgency. The wingers and full backs needed to be 5-10 yards further forward. Same with the forwards Sharp was way too deep in the 1st half. Adkins sorted and game on. The man knows how to win games of football, especially in this division.

Praise for woolford and mcnulty today, must have been frustrating being on bench for past few games but came on and impressed.

At last, fans who see what I see! A lot seem very fond of dissing our midfield ball players but if you've played that position, you know that if no one moves in front of you, you're going to find it very difficult to pass to them and as a result of you trying to make things happen, passes go astray. Thank you to you DnBlade and DannySUFC and anyone else who 'gets it'.
