I think you have hit the nail on the head there being classed as "hard" in football is not just about kicking crap out of another player when you take the ball its also about carrying on when you have had an accidental knee in the face half your teeth have gone, nose is broken and bloody bandage round your head and you still play onto the end. Quite a few times Morgan would get smashed in the face for defending a corner and have his head bandaged up and carry on.

There's the famous Terry Butcher photo playing for England with the blood soaked bandage around his head.

Bert Trautman playing in goal for Man City in a cup final with a broken neck !!

Yeah I was thinking about that too. Wasn't there also a goalkeeper who played with a broken cheek bone.

Was it Ray Wood Man Utd keeper v. Bolton 1958 cup final after a clash with Nat Lofthouse?

No , and I’m going to go all Silent on you here . :)

Ray Wood’s injury was a broken jaw in the 1957 final against Villa and caused by Peter McParland , their left winger .

The goalkeeper injured in the ‘58 final by Nat Lofthouse was Harry Gregg who was ‘gently nudged ‘ over the line by the great man . Worth checking out for anyone who doesn’t know what a gentle nudge looks like . :D

Saw footage of the final. Wood did groggily come back on the pitch playing at right wing, came off again and then returned to the pitch again, there was a moment when he dribbled past 2 or 3 players and the crowd cheered loudly

Basically any way in which an ice hockey player gets patched up and carries on most nights...
