Dear all his defenders/apologists/family members,

all you keep saying is he works hard, hes committed and he's loyal. I do not disagree with a word of that. He certainly has proved all that.

but in response to our criticism, thats what we keep hearing.

But work ethic aside, committment aside, loyalty aside...

Do you honestly, truthfully think he is good enough to play for United?

Yet again a misrepresentation of what has been said. All of his so called 'defenders/apologists/family members accept that he is limited in his abilities, that his passing can be very poor at times etc, etc. But, a little bit of balance and accuracy in the discussion would not go amiss, and it would also be quite nice if those who do not rate him could state their view without resorting to the sort of appalling personal abuse that you hear drunkards yelling at people in the street on a weekend evening when spoiling for a fight.

He' s not right for us now, but was right for the previous 5 managers and the one who's just hired him. When you're sat at your desk, have you ever pondered why you think you know better?

When you're sat in your seat at a match, have you ever pondered whether or not you think you know better?

if you havent, you're the only football fan in the world.

Dirk Kuyt gets a game at Liverpool and has been there years. he 'works hards'.

Hes got about 3 goals this season.

Another genius scout wasting time on here. Now I thought that Robson together with Heath were probably the worst managers at BDTBL in my time, but despite that if you ask whose opinion on a footballer I would trust, theirs or the dream team on here, I say show us your medals boys!!

On individual cases yes. But if something keeps punching me in the face every week for a decade, I'd concede that somethings punching me in the face.

My problem with Monty is quite simple really, he just doesn't get the basics quite right. His passing, control, heading and positional sense are average at best, his shooting, (the screamer at Tranmere apart) is woeful.

To answer the OP's question though as United have been distinctly average since Monty made his debut in 2000 then I would say yes, he is probably good enough to play for United but that doesn't make him good enough per se.

I think it was generally accepted that Robson might not have been a great manager, but he did seem to be able to spot a few good players. He just couldn't get them playing well together!

Why start another thread ?

so you'll comment... :)

I think we're always going to disagree on this Alco, but i just felt our point was being diluted a little in view of monty's admittedly great service to the club.

that said, we have better things to be talking about, namely the pasting County are getting right about now!

considering the quality of most of that post, i have to assume you're being genuine in calling me a genius scout. i have obviously stuffed you on Football Manager some time!

But i take your point, they should know and they have the success to prove it. and our predicament is not monty's fault. im just saying that being rubbish doesnt necessarily mean u get shipped out in football and there are countless examples of it.

Depends what league you've playing in.
Don't need him to stop third rate players play but in the prem need to stop players like gerard playing.

Ask some of the players who pinchy couldn't get a game with who gave them a hard time and I'm sure Mr Monty will be on some players lists, says it all.

I bet I've got more than the former semi-pro, non-league, reserve goalie!

I watched the dvd of the promotion season last week - when we were distinctly average enough to get into the PL (not to mention Monty's role in 2003 and the two semi finals and play offs) - and some of Monty's football on there was top notch. As a predominantly holding midfielder I can forgive his lack of goals - and that dvd demonstrated that his positional play was fine and his through balls can be incisive.

At the end of the day Monty has become a Marmite player. As a result of his work rate he contributes so much to each game - not all of which comes off. Those who (seem to literally) hate the man mostly see the bad and begrudgingly accept the good - others see the opposite. Either way - he doesn't deserve the vitriol he's given on here.

Whether he is good enough to play DW's style of football is more interesting. Given he's not transfer listed, we have to assume DW considers he still has a role at the club. If the loan to Millwall becomes permanent, the indication has to be that he's good enough to play at a level higher than ours.
