Whats with the rise of the applause in the x th minute. Instead of pre match min applause or silence for people that have passed, which worked because you had everyone attention & if ain't broke dont fix it. Instead of expecting people to remember while their concentration is on the Match because i felt awkward halfway through the 6th min after i saw the picture on the screen remembered but of course i didn't want to be the only person clapping

Sadly it becomes a bit of a trend. It's 'in' at the moment and will be 'out' again soon enough, but with the rise of social media it's a way of getting a commemoration going for someone without necessarily having to involve (or get permission from) the club.

Thing is, not everyone sees the posts or hears about it in that way and nobody wants to appear disrespectful or spoilsport-ish. You then have people looking round awkwardly at a lot of people and clapping anyway, even though they don't know who or what they're clapping for. I've been guilty of it a couple of times myself.

I really hate to think/say it and I sincerely hope I'm wrong, but I think a part of it for some people is attention. You get quite a lot of retweets, likes and comments from posts relating to applause for X in the Xth minute, and that gives a lot of validity to some people.

Also, some people these days seem uncomfortable with silence - they always need a TV in the background or music or something. My gf for one

I agree that a minutes silence seems far more respectful but then there is always the danger that someone will ruin it. At least the applause drowns out that minority.

We'll be clapping for 90 minutes non stop before too long regardless of what we see on the pitch.
