With very little to report about yesterday's game (a win is a win), we move on to the serious stuff on Tuesday night.
I noticed that Steve Bruce was in the crowd yesterday. What's the point? A United team that will have changed substantially by Tuesday. What if we'd have sent somebody to 'spy' on Villa 3 weeks ago when they lost 3-1 at home to Peterbrough? I can't see what they would have gleaned from that fixture. Anyway...
Since I did ‘Memries of Villa’ in December 2017, not much has changed.
Just a week (on January 23rd) before this game, Sky announced that the game would be televised live. Villa have sold their 2,200 allocation so it’s another example of ‘them’ paying little regard for the football fan. Still, I suppose it’s better than our League fixture on 23rd December, 2017 which was moved (by Sky) to a 17.45 kick off. Cross Country trains decided to take industrial action so, while fans could travel by train to the match, there were no direct trains back to Sheffield.
After a slow start to the season, Villa’s form has improved and they have been a near-permanent fixture in the top 6 of The Championship:
As recently as December 23rd, 2017 we got a creditable 2-2 draw at Villa Park in The Championship. Trailing 0-2, a fine brace by Clayton Donaldson rescued a point for United:
Or, here’s and extended (22 mins!) vlog of the day:
Villa lost at home to Peterborough in the Third Round of the Emirates FA Cup on January 6th. Therefore, they have just had a ‘blank’ weekend while United played Preston. (Memo to those who think United shouldn’t have ‘rotated the squad’.)
To date, our League results against Villa read:
Home: P: 61 W: 27 D: 17 L: 17 F: 113 A: 87
Away: P: 62 W: 8 D: 13 L: 41 F: 57 A: 150

United are just four points behind Villa and three points in this game would be useful as Villa’s next match is at home to Burton on 3rd February followed by a home game v. Birmingham on Feb. 11th.

Full list

Albert Adomah, Conor Hourihane and Robert Snodgrass
Also worth a mention is Scott Hogan . Bought from Brentford in January 2017 for £12m, Hogan recently went 16 matches without scoring but has now scored four goals in the last three league games.
Apart from the above, Villa have quality all over the park. The gifted but twattishly-annoying Jack Grealish, James Chester, John Terry, Ahmed Elmohamady and – on –loan – Ross McCormack.
Looks daunting, but the same could be said about teams like Derby – and we got four points off them.
