Wednesday 3rd October (KO 19:45) sees the Blades visit Ewood Park – the first meeting between the clubs since 3rd February 2007, when both clubs were in the Premier League. Neil Warnock’s Blades lost this Premier League encounter 1-2, our goal coming from Stead. With the score at 1-1, Blackburn were awarded a very ‘soft’ free-kick which Morten Gamst Pedersen converted in the 90th minute.

It will be our 141st League meeting, going back to January 1894.

Blackburn are back in The Championship after securing automatic promotion from League One last season:

With their 2-2 home draw with Nottingham Forest last Saturday (29th September) Blackburn are now unbeaten in their last 25 home league games.

The club was established in 1875, becoming a founding member of The Football League in 1888 and the Premier League in 1992. In 1890, Rovers moved to Ewood Park. Blackburn Rovers have been English champions three times, and have won six FA Cups and one Football League Cup. The club has spent most of its existence in the top flight of English football’

Since the Premier League was formed in 1992, we’ve met Blackburn six times in the top flight – and failed to win any of them.

I’ve gone back to the 1st May 1990 as this is one of our more significant league encounters in recent years. Closing in on promotion back to the top-flight, this Tuesday night 0-0 draw was seen as a disappointment. I remember Billy Whitehurst missing a late header from close in. However, four days later at Leicester’s Filbert Street, Dave Bassett’s Blades would win 5-2 in an unforgettable landmark in Blades history.

Complete record Sheffield United v Blackburn Rovers

The 1992-93 season was the inaugural Premier League season. We lost both league fixtures against Blackburn but on March 6th 1993, we were drawn to play Blackburn away in the 6th round of the FA Cup. A 0-0 draw meant we took Rovers back to Bramall Lane on 16th. It was another ‘one of those games’ where Dave Bassett’s United drew 2-2 at full-time against Kenny Dalglish’s Blackburn. Extra time produced no more goals so the game went to penalties. United scored all five of ours and set up an historic semi-final showdown at Wembley on April 3rd against…Sheffield Wednesday…

Blackburn would finish this season in fourth place in the Premier League. The following season (1993-94) they were runners up and the season after that (1994-95), they were Premier League Champions, thanks to Jack Walker’s millions and top-scorer Alan Shearer’s 34 league goals.

28th February 1970 saw a very good Blades side win 2-1 at Blackburn in Division Two. Abysmal quality vid. on BBC’s ‘Match of the Day’ (commentary by Kenneth Wolstenholme), but goals by Woodward and Currie make up for it!

To date, our League results against Blackburn read:

Home: P: 70 W: 33 D: 21 L: 16 F: 138 A: 80

Away: P: 70 W: 20 D: 14 L: 36 F: 85 A: 127

Championship Table:

Blackburn are currently 13th in the table, while the mighty Blades are in fourth place.

Form Guide:

Blackburn are ninth in the ‘form guide’ (based on the last six league games) but, at this early stage in the season, this can be misleading. They are showing exactly the same recent form as previous runaway leaders Leeds United.

On 27th June 2017, Bradley Dack was signed from Gillingham for an initial fee of £750,000. In his first season for Rovers, he scored 18 goals in 42 league appearances and won the EFL League One Player of the Season award.

In late August 2018, Rovers completed the signing of striker and U-19 England international Ben Brereton from Nottingham Forest on an initial loan deal with the option of a permanent transfer in January. It is understood that personal terms have been agreed ahead of a deal which could cost Tony Mowbray's side up to £7m.

Danny Graham has been at Rovers since 2016 – having played for many clubs including Swansea City (who bought him from Watford for £3.5m) and Sunderland who signed him from Swansea for £5m.

Also in the last week in August, Jack Rodwell joined Blackburn on a deal lasting until the end of the season.

Former Everton and Manchester City midfielder Rodwell, who was a free agent after leaving Sunderland, is Blackburn manager Tony Mowbray's fifth signing of the summer.

Kasey Palmer arrived at Ewood Park on a season-long loan deal from Chelsea in July 2018. Palmer is a midfielder who also plays for England U21s.

The 21-year-old signed on the dotted line from the Premier League outfit just in time for the 2018-19 campaign and brings a wealth of Championship experience with him.

Versatile ex-Celtic player Charlie Mulgrew is proving a valuable addition to Blackburn’s firepower.

After an initial loan spell, forward and England U21 international Adam Armstrong signed for Blackburn Rovers permanently on 6 August 2018 on a four-year contract for an undisclosed fee from parent club Newcastle United.

Midfielder Jacob Davenport joined Blackburn on 2nd July 2018 on a four-year deal. He was captain of Manchester City’s Elite Development Squad.

The Manager

Tony Mowbray has managed seven clubs with limited/little success apart from winning the Football League Championship with West Bromwich Albion in 2007–08. He has been in charge at Blackburn since 22nd February 2017.

My first visit to Ewood was in the 80s (i fink) won 0 - 2

Two goals (maybe on his debut) from a forward launching another false dawn, one a decent header as I remember it

The 1993 video reminds us What a great competition the FA Cup used to be before money and foreign influence spoiled it.

I’ve never seen the decision again, but that Pedersen freekick goal you mentioned is one of the angriest I think I’ve been at a football match. Felt like we’d shaded that game and then got absolutely kicked in the teeth with such a soft foul.

Oh for that extra point...

I think it was on Bladesunited but I remember seeing a post after the game from someone whose mrs had said “I see Warnock got sent off again” - it was Stephen, not Neil...

I think I am right in saying that we have played more league games against Blackburn than anyone else.

Our histories are very similar save for 1992 to 2012 where they had Jack Walker and we didn't.

I remember playing them at the Lane on a Friday night in September 2000 during the height of the 'petrol blockade'. A lot of fans struggled to get to the game because their cars had run out of petrol! I think Souness was their manager, they got promoted that year and our 2-0 win was probably the highlight of that season. Alan Kelly was in net for them and he got a great reception, I think his poor clearance led to our first goal? I've just Googled the teams that day and Kevin Blackwell was a substitute for us, I'd forgotten that!

You are probably right, but Blackburn are one of the teams we seem to have avoided since I started supporting the Blades in 1980. I'd say we have played Preston a lot more during that period.

From 53 mins 30 secs in below video, you can see the MOTD footage for more than 35 minutes. Worth a watch.

It was the very last touch of the game. So close!

I watched the extended highlights of that match recently, and couldn’t believe how tired both teams were towards the end of the game. It was being played at walking pace (almost literally), and it really showed the difference in fitness compared with players of today.

I have no idea why we didn't go for Dack last season. He looked very good for Gillingham whenever I'd seen him

Dack has had some legal trouble: he assaulted a policeman and repeatedly breached his community service order. He's also got a reputation of having a bad attitude which put teams off him.

Some twats technically started the Nuddy song, long before it became popular, in response to his equaliser at Ewood Park.

Sorry.

He essentially booted a clearance into David Kelly and it rolled in. Devlin scored our other with a fantastic long range shot.

Think there were only about 10,000 there.

You are right. The 1999 Clarebrough and Kirkham history says that; it was 134 at that time.

I seem to remember a home game against them near the end of our relegation season in 78/79. They had a player sent off early on and were

so incensed that they played thereafter with much determination to keep us out. They got a freak winner when our goalie kicked the ball

from his hands and it hit the back of one of their retreating players and bounced back into the net.

It's also curious that we have just played Millwall and play Blackburn next. The three of us were relegated together from Div 2 in 78/79.

AK gave it straight to David Kelly didn't he? For the 1st goal?

Seem to remember a couple of bleak afternoons up st Ewood Park (arent they all at that shit hole) back in the 80s. One a 3-1 defeat after Edwards had given us the lead (Jan 84?) and a hiding (think we lost 6-1) where we were absolutely awful, but got fantastic backing from the fans who went mad when Edwards scored a late consolation which was his 200th league goal. The Blackburn fans couldn't understand why we were going crazy for our late goal when we were 6 down at the time. Puzzled faces from them. Joyless twits.

Yep I went to the 6-1 game, we also played them during our relegation season 88 when it pissed it down I think we lost 4 nowt, I think bizarrely Steve Archibald played for them.
