Sheffield United 6 (Tonne, Tonne, Philliskirk, Chapell, Chapell, Philliskirk (pen)) - 0 Port Vale
Now this really will be a quick one as it was all one-way traffic with the Blades quicker and more organised than the visitors.
United spurned their earliest chances with Sam Johnson managing a fingertip save from Kristoffer Lokberg after a lucky rebound hit the Blades player. Danny Philliskirk and Erik Tonne were causing problems for Vale's defence but couldn't capitalise on a 2-on-2 as Philliskirk slipped on a greasy pitch.
On the rare occasions Vale did push into our half, United showed they could defend in numbers. Phil Roe was caught in possession by Grant Jefferies but was immediately surrounded by red and white shirts, one of which was Connor Brown on his first start back from injury. He certainly doesn't seem to be carrying too many ill effects from his cruciate problems, getting stuck in when he needed to and making some darting runs forward.
Jefferies also found himself on the end of a crunching but exquisitely-timed challenge in the box from Marc Warren just as he was shaping to shoot.
United were taking some time to get their eye in... Seamus Conneely fired well over after a lovely bit of control by Andras Gardos to bring down a high ball and Kingsley James could only hit the ball straight into Johnson's arms from an outswinging corner.
Cracks were starting to show in Vale's resolve as Johnson spilled Roe's cross straight into the path of Lokberg before bravely scrambling to claim at his feet but the keeper could do nothing about the first goal when it came. The ball fell to Tonne on the edge of the box and he fired home through a sea of shirts.
After being extremely unlucky not to bag a goal last week against Rotherham, Tonne made doubly sure his name was on the scoresheet, accepting Philliskirk's lovely lay-off to poke home both his and United's second. Philliskirk himself made it three just before half time after Gardos' forward run.
United started the second half in the same manner they finished the first. Jordan Chapell bagged an early brace with little reply from Port Vale and was unlucky not to get his hattrick after a cheeky chip on the keeper came bouncing back off the base of the post.
Perhaps an indication of his availability to the first team, Tonne was subbed quite early on in the second half for Porya Ahmadi and Connor Brown received a warm round of applause as he was replaced by Troy Pennycooke-Morgan.
Port Vale's night was well and truly over as the referee adjudged that Sam Johnson had illegally brought down Philliskirk in the box and pointed immediately to the spot. It was probably the softest penalty we'll ever get awarded, but Philliskirk accepted the gift and smashed the ball home.
United are in with a shot of winning the Central League title if we beat Derby County at home next Tuesday afternoon.
