Just a quickie (ooo err!) as most of the action was put on Twitter as it happened. Photos from Foxy to follow...

Rotherham United 1 (Marshall) - 4 Sheffield United (Philliskirk, Lokberg, Gardos, Chapell)

Seeing as it looked a nice night to be sat out in the open, we thought we'd have an amble along to Don Valley to watch the reserves take on Rotherham. Rather strange that our home matches are played outside Sheffield and yet an away match is played in the city boundaries... and the location got to Foxy as he consistently tweeted the scores the wrong way round (Blades as the home team)!

Anyway, the starting line-up was a mix of our foreign development players and some of the lads who've come through the Academy. We've not really had as much chance to see the reserves this season as in previous years so it was good to see how some of the players have progressed physically, especially against a Rotherham side which looked that little bit taller and stronger.

Rotherham kicked off and the play was pretty even in midfield but it was United who had the best of the attacking play. The Blades thought they'd scored early on when Shane Murray's outswinging corner found Kingsley James who saw his initial slot blocked by the keeper before a scramble in the box saw the ball in the back of the net. The linesman adjudged that there was an offside however and Rotherham were let off the hook.

Erik Tonne most certainly had a busy evening and linked up well with David McAllister. There was a lovely lay-off from Tonne to McAllister in the box, but the ball seemed to get caught under the Irishman's feet and it was hooked over for a goal kick.

There was very little traffic coming the other way but Mihkel Aksalu did his job very well when called upon. He was also very vocal in arranging his back line and even encouraging United players in the final third. If that lad struggled with English when he first got here, he certainly isn't struggling now!

Tonne was left shaking his head when he saw a powerful shot rebound back off the post before Danny Philliskirk opened the scoring with a beautiful right footed shot from outside the area which beat the Millers' keeper Jack Leyden at full stretch.

Callum Kennedy almost had an instant response for Rotherham after he was allowed too much space down the left hand side but leaned too far back into his shot which sailed high over Aksalu's net.

Kristoffer Lokberg was keeping himself busy in midfield, but when opportunity fell to him inside the box from a rebound off the keeper, he showed he has a very sweet left foot as he slotted a fine volley home to double United's lead.

Rotherham looked rattled as Ollie Banks was given a talking to by the ref for taking Shane Murray late but put their frustrations to good use as Marcus Marshall managed to pull one back for the home side just before the break. He poked home from close range with Aksalu stranded at his feet.

In the second half, there was really only one side in it. Tonne looked extremely comfortable pushing forward with the ball at his feet and showed great composure under pressure. He was unlucky not to bag a goal when his shot was saved by virtue of Leyden having his face in the way! I'm not sure the Millers' keeper was considering himself really that fortunate when he had to receive treatment for it.

Aksalu was also doing his bit to attack from the back and a route one ball to Tonne again provided a scoring opportunity but he just couldn't seem to get a touch on the ball before Leyden gathered it up.

Poor Murray wasn't having the best of nights when another late challenge saw him limping off with what looked like an injured ankle, being replaced by Hungarian midfielder Andras Gardos.

Aksalu again showed good awareness of the forward players to chuck a long throw to Tonne who won a corner which was eventually cleared as far as Seamus Conneely. His shot from 40 yards lacked accuracy but didn't half have some power behind it as it fizzed over the bar.

Tonne again was unlucky as he tried to place the ball across Leyden but saw his effort trickle just wide. McAllister then had a bursting run forwards, releasing the ball to Tonne who casually wandered across the box drawing three defenders out before cheekily back-heeling to Gardos. It looked as though the Hungarian had squandered the lovely bit of build up play as his shot on goal was parried by Leyden but he made sure he buried the ball home on the rebound.

Rotherham were well and truly beaten and it didn't take long for Jordan Chapell to completely finish them off as the Blades were allowed far too much time on the ball, Tonne again had chipped in with the assist with a good ball in to Chapell.

Not getting too excited as a Tuesday night reserve match in front of a handful of people is hardly the measure of any player. But on an absolutely shocking pitch, the Blades tried to play some neat and high-tempo stuff.

And seeing as Foxy has popped the pictures on, thread unlocked...

Really good read Linz, cheers for going to the time and effort for a fairly meaningless reserve game!

I know it's tough to judge against that level of opposition, but which players that we haven't already seen involved in the first team look ready to be given a go this season with a view to being regularly involved next season?

Thought I'd add a few thoughts on a few players, though I'll keep it brief and fleeting and come back to this as I've got a few jobs I should be doing before bed!

Erik Tonne - Looked confident, comfortable on the ball and almost relaxed yet persistant when running at defenders. Showed some good touches and brought people into play well (most importantly set up goals). At times he did tend to go it alone when perhaps a pass might have been the better option but he looked eager to impress and you can't really blame the lad for hogging it a bit when he contributed to all of the goals! Really did do everything but bag himself a goal.
I'd definately give him some more time in the first team before the season is out.

David McAllister - Thought he also played with more confidence than I've seen previously. Was very mobile and energetic and looked to get on the ball whenever he could.

Mihkel Aksalu - Far better communicator than I've though of him previously. He's certainly picked up some english (loved the "fucks sake!" when a rare sliced kick went out of touch for a throw in on half way :D). Wasn't called upon an awful lot but collected the ball well from a couple of corners and definately made himself heard throughout the game, not just when defending.

Phil Roe - Still looks a bit lightweight in build to me, perhaps if we could get him loan somewhere to bulk him up and give him the experience of regular first team experience? That said, I thought the same of Kyle Naughton and he never seemed to get bullied/outmuscled in the Championship.

Seems like the boy Tonne impressed in front of the watching boss. Can see him getting a start before the end of season.

Surely all three of these should be in the first team on Saturday. At the very least we should have them in the squad. I am sure that the fans would support these 3 being included, in addtion to Maguire and Slew. We're down and the senior players are not performing. I was told that Adams was there last night and hence hopefully he will be looking to use these players. We should use the last 4 games to see which of these are likely to be able to make the step up next year and just to build thier experience.

Didnt Tonne come on for the last few mins, Maybe against Middlesborough?

Thanks Foxy and Linz.

cheers for the report, lets remember when discussing players moving up it will be to league 1 not championship so some may be able to handle it.

Thanks for the report and player snippets, always great reading.

UTB!

Cheers thanks for the report, enjoyable read, you should take over some of the pros on match reports.

The cynic in me also thinks that the team will avoid some of the vitriol that has been aimed its way if it has a handful of kids in it, too.

Great reports, thanks!

Thanks Linz, let's hope Micky can get the mix right with what we have in our 1st team, decelopment and youth for next season.

With Tonne, James, Chappell, McAllister, Harriott etc; maybe we have a chance of getting a decent blend in midfield for next season. I don't like Doyle but maybe the responsibility of looking after these will raise his game

Bit confused with Philliskirk, is he a midfielder or striker?

Thanks Linz and Foxy for the report. The only thing missing is an indication of what formation we played and who played where.
Based on what little I know about the players, I'd have a guess at:-

Aksalu,
Conneely, Murray, Warren, Roe
Chappell, McAllister, James, Lokberg
Philliskirk, Tonne

Is that right or is Tonne a midfielder?

It could be that the first photo shows the forward line, with us playing 4-3-3?:

Aksalu
Conneely James Warren Roe
McAllister Murray Løkberg
Philliskirk Tønne Chappell

Tønne is very versatile, but has played mostly up front for us, though some of the reason is the lack of out and out strikers in our reserves.

Thanks Foxy and Linz, seems like a good little team being built there.

Not sure I'd go as far as Ollie and put them all in on Saturday, it wouldn't be wise to thrust them back in the first team again after playing midweek as well - not the way our luck goes with injuries. But I'd give a few of them a run out again

Nice typing Bergs. Loving the line through the o in Tonne and Lokberg.

Does this have much effect on the pronunciation of the name? Would Tonne be Tun or Ton (i.e. sounds like Tom but with an n) or does the squiggle mean it's something else entirely?
Just think it's important to get the name spot on before hurling abuse at anyone.

I don't know about the pronunciation in Norweigan... but I think in Danish it makes it more of an "oooyr" sound*. A bit like a "ö" in German.

But it'll get anglicised (bastardised!) and most are pronouncing his name to rhyme with "Tom".

* I am happy to watch Mads Mikkelsen some more though to try and get it just right ;)

Yes, if you know the ö-sound in German, it's similar. Sometimes the ø gets written "oe" in English, rather than "o".

Ahhh the Umlaut discussion. I had one of these the other week...I found out that an Umlaut on an 'o' changes the sound to an 'oooer', but that might be just because the bloke was from Bavaria

I believe the Noggy's will pronounce his name Tun

Or as i'm sure we'll here on the Kop soon "Nah then Tony! Get thi sen fooked off back om"

Pronounce the Ø like the u in "curse" and include the e at the end, you'll be close.

Aye... Österreich is "Errr-sterreich".... sort of.

Aye... Österreich is "Errr-sterreich".... sort of.

That's pretty close - in German, you can either use the umlaut or follow the 'normal' vowel with an 'e'. Gerd Müller's name could also be written Mueller, and is pronounced somewhere close to Mooeler.

Österreich is almost urgh-sterreich.

Balham Blade - proudly a little bit German.

So is he really just called plain old Eric Turner?

I blame the clubs communications department for pretending we have foreign signings!!!
