Cotterill, one of the Championship club's long-term targets, completed his protracted transfer from Wigan Athletic last night when he signed a four year contract at Bramall Lane.
While the Wales international, who enjoyed an impressive three month spell in South Yorkshire last season, was being put through his paces inside the medical room at United's Shirecliffe training complex, Blackwell was applying the finishing touches to a loan move for Luton Town's Spring.
After the busiest 24 hours of his near-six-month reign - with Maltese goalkeeper Justin Haber also among the new arrivals - Blackwell refused to rule out the possibility of making further additions to the promotion hopeful's midfield as they prepare for next week's visit to Birmingham City.
"We've asked to be kept informed of what is happening with Lee," he said.
"Manchester United and Sir Alex Ferguson have made no secret of the fact that they wanted to have a look at him during pre-season but we've requested that we're kept in touch.
"If somebody else comes in then it'll have to be something spectacular.
"It might not be spectacular in terms of money but they'll have to give us something that we haven't already got."
Although Spring's name slipped under the media's radar as speculation raged about the identities on Blackwell's wanted list, United's attempt to prise Cotterill away from the JJB Stadium has dominated the headlines this summer.
Blackwell has refused to divulge what it cost to secure the 20-year-old's release - "Let's just say it's substantial. More than I earn in a year.
"David wanted to come here, we've seen what he can do and so we've given him a three to four year contract as a sign of our faith in him," Blackwell added.
"He showed his commitment to us. We wanted to show ours to him."
Think if he got a good run in the side and stayed fit, he would be a good asset
