SHEFFIELD United manager Kevin Blackwell is continuing to monitor winger Lee Martin's situation at Old Trafford despite finalising deals for David Cotterill and Matthew Spring.
Cotterill, one of the Championship club's long-term targets, completed his protracted transfer from Wigan Athletic last night when he signed a four year contract at Bramall Lane.

While the Wales international, who enjoyed an impressive three month spell in South Yorkshire last season, was being put through his paces inside the medical room at United's Shirecliffe training complex, Blackwell was applying the finishing touches to a loan move for Luton Town's Spring.

After the busiest 24 hours of his near-six-month reign - with Maltese goalkeeper Justin Haber also among the new arrivals - Blackwell refused to rule out the possibility of making further additions to the promotion hopeful's midfield as they prepare for next week's visit to Birmingham City.

"We've asked to be kept informed of what is happening with Lee," he said.

"Manchester United and Sir Alex Ferguson have made no secret of the fact that they wanted to have a look at him during pre-season but we've requested that we're kept in touch.

"If somebody else comes in then it'll have to be something spectacular.

"It might not be spectacular in terms of money but they'll have to give us something that we haven't already got."

Although Spring's name slipped under the media's radar as speculation raged about the identities on Blackwell's wanted list, United's attempt to prise Cotterill away from the JJB Stadium has dominated the headlines this summer.

Blackwell has refused to divulge what it cost to secure the 20-year-old's release - "Let's just say it's substantial. More than I earn in a year.

"David wanted to come here, we've seen what he can do and so we've given him a three to four year contract as a sign of our faith in him," Blackwell added.

"He showed his commitment to us. We wanted to show ours to him."

Think if he got a good run in the side and stayed fit, he would be a good asset :)

Just exactly how long is the deal that he has signed?

however according to the beeb its a 3 year contract, and i'm sure that sky are stating a 2 year deal

I'm confused

Martin is class on his day i think, but Man United see him as a big player for the future so i doubt they would sell him.

The signing of right winger David Cotterill will not signal the end of United's search for a further attacking player for the opposite flank.

The ex Wigan man provides pace and threat going forward down the right and Kevin Blackwell, though mindful of being caught on the counter-attack, wants a similar option down the left:

"We already have the likes of Quinny and Armstrong who can play wide and lock things up to balance things out in that way but we might need someone who can provide something different on occasions."

Manchester United's Lee Martin played six times for the Blades on loan at the Lane last term and although he has been involved in some of the Reds' pre-season friendlies he could again figure on the radar:

"There is a possibility that we might still be able to do something with Lee and have asked Sir Alex to keep us informed.

"Lee has said he would like to come back because he enjoyed his time here - as did the other lads who came on loan last season - which is a good mark for this club."

hope we sign him :D

so we have tonge, quinn, carney, cotterill, and maybe stead and webber that can go on the wing, yet we are still looking at IMO a average player in martin, without boosting our CB position of ugo, morgan and killa.

Totally agree Mate, CB does need a bit more experience.

Tonge, Stead, Webber are not wingers, but can play there...... square pegs and that.

Carney doesn't seem to be part of his plans and I believe is away for the opening fixtures at the olympics.

Quinn.... well for me he isn't good enough.

I do agree, a CB is needed, but it also depends on how much Blackwell sees playing Ugo. If he sees him as a first teamer, then we don't need one.

Personally I think we need another centre-back, because if killa or morgs get injured the only real back-up we have is ehiogu and he is no stranger to an injury!

I agree completley

People are saying he's class on his day, but how many times have we seen it? we've got nothing to go on!

halford can play CB but not favoured position is it really???

IMO we need another CB and a creative/attacking midfielder to come in behind the strikers.

Before we buy too many more players, somebody has to leave as I don't think we can carry a 26 man squad in the Championship.

Oh yes without a doubt mate.

Its time to trim some fringe players IMO. Esp the ones who have been stuck in the reserves for the past two seasons!
