I've posted on several other threads that I cant understand why we are all so ambivalent (myself included) about the possibility of Robins getting the job.

One of the criticisms levelled at him is that he hasnt taken club to play-offs or promotion.

In the case of Rotherham he took on a club in financial dire straits with a 15 point deduction and almost took them to promotion, he then took over at Barnsley with him sitting bottom of the Championship and has built them into a solid championship side.

He has quietly been learning his trade in difficult circumstances, but does seem to have something about him.

With regards to him being a bit of a knob, I am sure that is an accusation which could probably be levelled at most successful managers, Fergie, Mourinho and Clough included.

It usually the managers that are too nice that tend to fail.

i agree with most things you say here mate,he did do well at rotherham and he has done ok with the dingles, but to take them any further he needs the backing of the board and some cash, if he aint getting either then barnsley will stagnate where they are, i have got to admire the bloke because he has told them this and they obviously have not listened so he has gone,he wont be out of work for long.personally i am not one for listening to all these managers post match interviews as people are usually pumped up and things are said and the scummy reporters cant wait to stir the shit and its not usually about football, i.e. the idiot who asked fergie about giggs at the champions league press conference ! i think a lot of managers are embarrassed and dont like doing it.

Look at the players Robins brought to Barnsley last year compared to some of our signings. This with a lesser budget
He tactically took the piss out of Adams in my opinion at the Lane.
He has contacts, he seems more focused than what we have had for a few years.

We might have actually stumbled across the right man this time.

Let's bloody hope so

Warnock's mannerisms were not to my liking but he was one of our better managers. Mannerisms and football managers seem to go together. I'd settle for results - and, hopefully, some decent football.

Fair point BB. Having read it back I don't really know what I was on about. I just prefer someone I could warm to, but in reality I don't give two hoots if he can put a team out that makes me feel part of the club again.

I read that on Wikipedia too and it simply isn't true. They actually had a 17 point deduction and eventually finished 14th.
They were 21 points away from automatic promotion and even without the points deduction they would have only finished 5th.
A 5th place finish for a team that's just been relegated is no massive achievement in my book.
Incidentally, Exeter under Tisdale were the team that finished 21 points ahead of Rotherham and Rochdale under Hill made the play-offs that season.
Both had built their teams up from a much lower starting position than Robins had.

I also keep hearing that he left Rotherham at the top of the table and almost certainties for promotion.
They had in fact only played 6 league matches when he left them, so promotion that season was hardly "nailed on".

If you look at Barnsley's record over the last few seasons, it's been 20th, 20th, 20th, 19th and now 18th.
So Robins has improved their position by two league places after three seasons.
At that rate, they could have been play-off contenders by the turn of the decade!

He's not the worst manager out there but there are others who've achieved far more with greater restrictions and we don't seem to have even considered them.

Think your assessment of his Rovrum days is a little unfair, it must be bloody difficult to be motivated with a 17 point deduction so to gain enough points that would have been within 4 points of automatic promotion in normal circumstances is a pretty good effort. Much better than Bournemouth who had the same penalty and look at them now.

I think your last statement is bang on though. It seems to me that managers are dismissed out of hand without looking at cumulative records. For example, Peter Reid had a good record at Man City and Sunderland but is now a total no-go according to some. Why?
