Given the various views about Adkins, Clough etc I thought I'd do a bit of research (source Soccerbase).

The most successful SUFC manager in terms of win percentage over the last 50 years is?

The second most successful manager who managed for just 21 games was?

Of those managers who were permanent and who served for under 60 games the most successful was Nigel Spackman 46.5%, Adkins comes second on 41.5% and Bruce third 40.0%

Of those who served around 100 games the most successful manager came out on top 51.9% , followed by Nigel Clough on 47.1% and Kevin Blackwell 42.4%.

Finally of those who served longer than around 100 games, top of the list is Ian Porterfield 42.8%, Neil Warnock 42.5% and John Harris 42.3%.

Turning to success i.e promotions and trophies (what are they?) our most outstanding manager is Ian Porterfield with 2 promotions and no relegations. Bassett, Harris and Warnock all had an equal number of promotions as relegations (2 each for Bassett, one each for Harris and Warnock) although if you extend the time back beyond 50 years Harris' promotion in the early 60's would put him ahead of Bassett and Warnock but behind Porterfield.

Adams, Haslam, Peters and Sirrell had win percentages all below 32% and all got us relegated once.

So what does all this suggest? That keeping Adkins is probably unlikely to make him that more successful than he already has with us. That selling your best player has caused us relegations under Harris and Bassett and may have caused loss of promotion.

That investment in the team with better players than ones fellow league members is more likely to yield success (Porterfield D4) and that once a rapport with the team yields some benefit, try not to sack e.g. Clough.

As for keeping Adkins I suggest to improve team performance we need a manager that can motivate better but that getting rid of him probably means it is less likely that funds would be invested in the team. Since McCabe is strongly hinting at more academy players that could mean getting rid of Adkins may yield better results since he is not very likely to sanction acquiring new players anyway!

Verdict: Should have stuck with Clough or Wilson or possibly Warnock, but what we really need is another Ian Porterfield and Brearley type investment. :).

The only manager we should have stuck with was Kevin Blackwell.

We would NOT have been relegated.
Add Wilson to that list too, at least until the end of the season. He would have probably gotten the sack same time as Weir in the end though anyway.

To the OP: Win percentages are misleading because there are so many factors at play which it ignores.

For me the most successful manager is the one who managed the most seasons in the top division so the list should be like this.

From 1932 (we didnt have a manager before this). More than one season only

Harris - 9 and half seasons
Davison - 5 seasons
Bassett - 4
Furphy - 2 and half
Freeman - 2
