You'll not see a better example of defensive organisation all season. Incredibly proud of the effort from every one of the players.

Defence were superb, Collins managed Rooney and McEverley & Brayford were great on the flanks. The latter gave us just enough offensive impetus to keep Man U on their toes. Midfield were everywhere with Hammond organising and maintaining the shape. Sharp and Sammon ran themselves into the ground. We really deserved the point, Man United just couldn't break us down.

Good effort from the fans; the rousing Shoreham Boys just after we conceded left the ManUre fans dumbfounded. Gutted about the penalty at the death, but the ref was a homer so I wasn't too surprised.

Old Trafford I can take or leave, but we did ourselves proud today, fans included.

In the cold light of day , yes we were well drilled and played stoically
but Manchester United were getting ironic cheers from their own after getting in their first attempt after 60 odd minutes that went wide
That was without doubt the wankest Manchester United display for many a year
no urgency , movement was pedestrian crossing was dreadful
George Long faced only one shot between his posts , from 12 yards in the 93rd minute
mind you that was one less than DeGea faced which is disappointing

I think that there was well deserved credit for our defensive performance. The amount of times our defenders were heading away balls into the box was phenomenal. I was a bit disappointed that we didn't get much in the way of counter attacks. It was probably because it was the Manchester United first team rather than their reserves but we didn't create as much as we otherwise could have done which is my only complaint really. I think if we had had Done playing instead of Sammon we would have had a better chance.
Nonetheless, it was great to watch and you do feel proud at times like this. I know the media are going on and on about Man Utd being dreadful but it was the United players made it difficult for them. They were absolutely class, now lets smash Wigan!

Apologies for my poor grammar. Very tired.

Yea reasonably good defensively (apart from the penalty) but we need 8 sometimes 9 players to cover that roll when most teams have 6 sometimes 5 players dealing with defence. Then we moan about WHY we don’t attack!!!!!! We have no pace and poor CB's that sit so deep they are almost on the goal line - Man U were poor also but they are through and it’s back to league business for us again ……..

Ive been its biggest critic probably but That defence was most solid ive seen it for long while. McEveley & Collins were very good (that got to be under. things I never thought id say in 2016) :)for majority that back 4 cut out threat of the £130m attack mata martial herrera Rooney

I thought that we were excellent defensively for all of the game except the last two minutes when Brayford should have cleared and then Hammond inexplicably slides in recklessly.

For me the most annoying aspect of the game was Adkins negative outlook when it came to the last 10-15 minutes when we should have been going for the win and not the replay as he so obviously was.

Done should have been brought on 15 mins earlier as should Che. The pace and tenacity would have caused issues in a nervous ManU defense that is shot in confidence.

I am proud of the lads today but ManU were there for the taking.

Personally I don't like teams who play the game with 10 men behind the ball. " Ma

Having slept on it I think we were rock solid for over 90 minutes as you say but I think we were asleep for the penalty incident.

The fact that Depay had Brayford so exposed at that stage was naive because Depay was the only player to ruffle our feathers. Why had we not doubled up on him, leaving Brayford as cover, not the single defender? In the absence of support, why wasn't Brayford tighter or simply obstruct him once in trouble? Then of course why oh why did Hammond do what he did? Reckless for an experienced pro.

Magnificent defensive display for 93 minutes all undone by letting the one danger man go on a run, a simple "tip and run" from deep.

Easy this pundit lark after studying replays??!!

When shall we talk about the penalty?

- Brayford committed and got done for pace (perhaps a touch harsh)
- Coutts (i think) passed his man over to Brayford and watched rather than cover Brayford (which i assume was part of his task
- Coutts didn't get across to cover when Brayford got skinned
- Hammond ran 30 yards (past Coutts) to lunge in and make a tackle when there was cover in the box.

Once Brayford was skinned, Coutts should've been back to cover, when he wasn't, I'd expect that Coutts and hammond would then cover the box whilst Collins/ Edgar got dragged out to block the cross/ shot

The other 92 mins before that might've been great, solid, whatever, but we were undone by a bit of pace and player watching as well as an irrational decision to dive in an make a tackle like that.

In financial terms i'm sure Phipps et al are happy, but for the sake of 3 mins of concentration, we've probably lost 250-500k.

Bang on. It's alright Adkins talking about positivity but he was reluctant to display it yesterday. Manchester United really were there for the taking, as they say. Yes, we were "defensively solid" but it was hardly the Alamo. Positive changes should've been made early in the game. But no, because Billy was isolated we take him off, rather than trying to support him. Replacing our more "agricultural" or downright anonymous midfielders with attack-minded players would've been a start.

It's ok players "doing a job" but I wish fans and staff could consider what other jobs aren't being done.

Well I enjoyed it anyway ;)

Excellent display of keeping shape and keeping it simple, was very proud.

When shall we talk about the penalty? Well 7.56 am , the post before yours actually but never mind.

I agree with most of what you say but there was no way Coutts could have caught Depay once he had left Brayford in his wake. The fault was Coutts not marking Depay and leaving Brayford to cover. I think Coutts tires in the last half hour but others don't. Tired or not, Depay was our only real danger and we didn't cover the situation.

Manager reaction

Man Utd 1-0 Sheff Utd

More from boss Louis van Gaal on BT Sport:

"We can improve but how many chances have Sheffield United created? No one is talking about that. Everyone is talking about the fantastic defence of Sheffield United.

spot on this i thought that's it when i saw Flynn getting ready as as you know i can't stand him.. i was a little disappointed with the Nigel interview before the game on tv.. it was a bit too much 'ooh man utd poor little us' for me.. i knew he'd go for a draw.. Che would have torn them a new one on that pitch. i thought Sammon was useless .. again.. Bash was awesome.. Nigels interview 'after' the game was like he'd had a revelation..
as for them.. 'yeah it's Man Utd Jim.. but not as we know it'

But thats shows the mountain we were up against yesterday, van gaal can take off a 40m pound mata & bring on depay a 30m pound summer signing

Ha ha when i posted (because i'd started writing and came back after a coffee) your post wasn't there

I thought it looked like a combo, though you're right, the handover from Coutts to Brayford was crap leaving Brayford on his back foot. Coutts still had time to position himself better to cover Brayford if he was skinned and also cover the middle if the ball went back

Read this morning that Chelsea have the biggest wage bill at £200 plus million per annum. Mancs are at £192m!!!!

Thought Coutts did little wrong. Skinning Sweinsteiger down the line was my own highlight.

For the penalty actually the cover was there. The challenge never needed to be made because had Hammond stood up the ball wouldn't have made it across because there was cover just behind.

I can forgive anyone making a mistake and the look on Hammond's face showed me how much he cared. He was gutted as we're the entire team.

Man U were poor but there was a reason for that. Our game plan was bang on.

Proud of the fans, proud of the team, proud of the players and manager. They care. Now take that forward into the league and let's make something of the season.
