Tributes were paid today following the death of Sheffield United vice president, Harry Demetriou.

A close friend of Pele, Mr Demetriou helped bring the football legend to Bramall Lane for a three day visit in 2007 which included a special game between Sheffield FC and Inter Milan to mark the 150th anniversary of the city club.

He was also a key figure in developing the Blades international links in South and North America, particularly Brazil - work which led to him being appointed a vice president of the club.

Sheffield United director Scott McCabe said: "Harry was a close family friend and a man of great spirit.

"He was pivotal in driving and forging strategic alliances in the Americas - in particular with Sao Paulo Football Club and bringing the legendary Pele across to Bramall Lane in November 2007. He will be sadly missed by all at Sheffield United.

"We pass our condolences on to all the Demetriou family during this difficult period."

Mr Demetriou, who died following a courageous battle with cancer, leaves a widow, Cynthia, and five children.

Sad news! He did alot of work behind the scenes to drive the club forward. R.I.P
