Correct re Peterborough. Craig Mackail Smith, Dwight Gayle, Lee Tomlin, Aaron McClean, George Boyd. All signed from non-league clubs. Shows there are bargains to be had.

John Still has an excellent track record in that regard discovering Mackail Smith, Gayle, Andre Gray, Mark Cullen etc. all from non-league football.
John Still?

Like League One's better players, even League two talent is likely to attract substantial transfer fees if they're young and scoring goals. People like Roofe are probably worth up to £1m now and I can't see Oxford selling now, given their promotion push. We've been linked to defender Ryan Tafazolli, who seems decent and is 24, so a decent age. I like the look of Pierre but Adkins denied interest in the summer didn't he. There is real talent in League 2, the conference and Scotland that would add to what we have, but sometimes you have to be patient, like we did with Jamie Murphy. I can't see the better players in League One, like Moncur, wanting to move to us, because they'll surely prefer a move to the Championship.

Dagenham and Redbrdge manager. He's one I suggested as a possible manager for us around the time of Weir appointment when we couldn't find anyone to take the job. He was managing Luton at the time unearthing the talent of Adre Grey.

Wouldn't go for him now we are able to attract better calibre managers but his eye for a player is impressive.

It's often the way when you sign promising players from lower levels that they don't set the world alight straight away. Murphy, Vardy, Mahrez, Oztumer, Washington etc. showed that they might not immediately hit the ground running but they can become good players for the club that signs them.

That's why I still have high hopes for Adams.

Still think Ashley Flynn could make a step to League One (the non- league lad who has scored 30 odd so far this season and touted as the next Jamie Vardy, a natural finisher)

If teams like Burton can come into league one from league 2 and go to the top , surely that shows there are some players capable enough.
We have a good record in the past of signing players from the lowest league , Doncaster were down there when we snatched Brian Deane , he wasnt too bad

There's probably a couple more recent examples.

Oh, I see. I thought you were saying he was responsible for Peterborough's recruitment.

Wouldn't be my choice. Based in the south and too old for the challenge. Only ever worked in L1 for a season. Luton should have stuck with him as I do rate him at that level but not for us.

True but not 'we', not SUFC as a club. Just whoever is the manager at the time. Bassett had a good record, Warnock OK, the Cloughs found Adams and Wallace.

None of them have anything to do with the club anymore so 'past performance' is irrelevant.

He did manage Posh briefly in the 90s and did first discover Gayle and Mackail Smith selling them on.

Not at the same time though. He found GMS when he was at Daggers when they themselves were non league.
Gayle was later, when Daggers were in L2.
He didn't sign either for Posh.

Several of the Oxford players looked very decent in their game v Swansea at the weekend.

Kemar Roofe's the stand-out, clearly. But George Baldock's come on leaps & bounds - looks a real quality attacking right back now (though admittedly that's not a position we need to concern ourselves about).

John Lundstram's the one, apart from Roofe, I'd be looking at though. Was always going to be a class midfielder (& played well for Scunny against us last year) - he seems to have settled in at Oxford now & got some stability & rhythm. Reckon he'll go places over the next two or three years.

Decent article about Lundstram from the Guardian here:

I think Adams will come good, we just need to be patient. Peterborough have made some great signings from non league and lower league football. We should be following in a similar ilk coupled with a few more experienced players, and we already have those.

Come on Alf, get your own recommendations. Lundstram’s mine!

Agreed but for all Peterborough’s great signings, they still loiter just 3 points above us. I’ve watched them a few times over the last couple of years on the box and against us and noticed some impressive individual displays but a lot of their players are a bit “Che Adams” in that they often don’t make the right decisions or play as part of the team unit. Westley seems to be getting them moving in the right direction though (even though they do that ridiculous goal kick routine). I still think they could do with one or 2 experienced heads to help bring on their young players though.

Washington, Maddison, Oztumer, Anderson, Nthle, Taylor etc all look very promising but a Dean Hammond/ Michael Doyle type and a wily old centre half might help them pull it all together.

They're kind of the opposite to us really! They have the pace, skill and youth from the lower leagues, but with it the inconsistent performances, whereas we are mainly a bunch of either failed or inconsistent Championship players in their latter 20's early 30's, but with plenty of graft and endeavour and now it seems consistent performances, but I'm not sure with this squad we'll have the quality to unlock opposing defences in those tight games or keep it out of the other end. Sod it Adkins, just blow our budget on a few untried League 2 league stars! ;-)

I'm perplexed by those who seem to have a chip on their shoulder about league 2.

The Championship steal the best of league 1, why don't league 1 steal the best of League 2?
