Cracking! We get back from our honeymoon on Sunday 12th, I expected to have missed the first match :) this way she can get used to married life right from the first weekend - come to the football or see you on Sunday :D

To piss her off even more the League Cup game is week commencing 13th August :D

Seems the OS fancied following suit :D

Rather unusual next season then, as the League Cup starts before the League campaign.

It is unusual, but not unheard of. If my memory hasn't altogether failed me I think the league cup started before the league for a few seasons around the beginning of the 1980s. I seem to remember us playing Wednesday before the league programme started in the season that we were relegated to the fourth division. Let's hope the same thing doesn't happen this time!

The first round always started before the league season until 81-82. The two seasons we competed under that format we did crap - losing 2-4 on agg to Doncaster in 1979 and 1-3 on agg to Wednesday in 1980.

That makes sense of things and explains why I only became aware of it starting before the league season around the turn of the 1980s. We'd never attained a league position low enough to be included in the first round until 1979!

Mind you, I don't recall us ever doing particularly well in the league cup until 2002-3 season, apart from one or two memorable games - beating Liverpool in 1978, and Arsenal in the home leg in 1981.

Our best season in the League Cup prior to 2002-03 was reaching the quarter finals 3 times and each time - in true SUFC style - we buggered up what looked like good positions:

1961-62: we drew the quarter final away at Blackpool 0-0, but managed to lose the home replay 0-2
1966-67: first Division United lost the home quarter-final 2-3 to 2nd division Birmingham
1971-72 we lost the quarter final 0-5 at West Ham having won there 2-1 in the League a week or so before.

Twas ever thus...

Going from memory, didn't the League Cup start first in 1999/2000 with a home game against Shrewsbury?

Incidentally, I recall buying the programme for this match and reading that one of their players, Steve Jagielka,

was the brother of Phil Jagielka who was one of our United youth team. That's the first time I heard of Jags.

Feb 16th - Home to Colchester & my Birthday too.
I know pretty much it'll end up being changed cos it's normally FA cup weekend so we'll be playing away at the farthest part of the country instead so i don't get to see a game on my birthday as per the norm.

Tranmere away on Saturday 30th March and then Carlisle at home on the Monday night? Is that correct?

Wouldn't that be the 5th round of the cup? You're optimistic of it being changed!
