While he might not be their starting GK, don't think it's going to hurt or chances signing Smith. Maybe they've got an U21 keeper they feel with the right coaching would be able to do a job for them?

Kenny's departure still saddens me to be honest. He was such a good goalkeeper but also a fans favourite and we stood by him through the ban, only for him to leave us on a minimum fee of far less than his real value. I don't recall Paddy ever coming out and saying why he left us and that he was sad that it ended the way it did etc, but maybe he did and I've forgotten? I recall that he didn't get on with Blackwell and his marriage had broken down so it seemed a good time to team up with Warnock again.

It's almost always down to cold hard cash when all's said and done. I'm under no illusions about how the game works. But his treatment of us was particularly cynical and crass. You'd think that after the best part of a decade with the club, the fans who backed him to the hilt and took him to their hearts would at least deserve the courtesy of him saying "Thanks for everything, now I must leave for reason A, B or C". But no..... nothing.

This is why with a few rare exceptions, I don't give a toss about former players. I see them for what they are, mere tools to be used at our disposal. If they aren't doing a job for us, they don't matter.

Paddy was sold because a club on the up met our valuation of him.
Another episode of the club selling its better players and creating a slide down the leagues.

Clearly not the sharpest knife in the drawer but another big factor in some of our best recent times, and for that I appreciate him.

I once met some of Paddy's mates from Halifax on the train on the way to a game. To say that they weren't the brightest would be a gross understatement. Think shameless and then drop a notch or too. Paddy is a council house kid (as am I before anyone gets excited) that has done well for himself. He could be miles brighter than his mates and still not think past the end of his nose. He will simply have done what his advisors told him to do and those grounds I bear him no malice. I don't think he's bright enough for any of his actions to have been pre conceived and definitely daft enough to take illegal substances without a second thought

If I remember rightly (which I hardly ever do) he had a chunk out of his eyebrow that day too from being bit or clipped because of it.

Definitely one of the more mentally challenged players to have passed through the lane. I remember Warnock commenting that he was thick as pigs shit after he got his brow bitten off in a curry house brawl.

Had the look of the village idiot but sure had excellent reactions and was streets ahead of any keeper we have had since.

Thought he had some issues when he had too much time to 'think' and sometimes made the wrong decision when it wasn't purely down to reactions. Saved us numerous other times though with some excellent stops.

Obviously had a real bond with Warnock and seemed to follow him wherever he went so wasn't really surprised that he left but certainly was surprised with the manner. No matter how thick he may be, he surely must have had enough sense to realise that the least he could do would be to acknowledge the fans who had stood by him during his drugs ban and to not leave at the very first opportunity following his long paid absence.

For me each player is different. The likes of Kenny, Kevin McDonald, Lee Williamson, Kilgallon etc, yeah they just did a job and moved on when a better offer came. But the likes of the Bassett squads and David Holdsworth, Mark Patterson, Jan Aage Fjortoft, Ched Evans (many more but would take too long to list) - they still speak really highly of the club and clearly have an affinity that will last forever.
