Much more realistic than McLaughlin in my opinion.

Can cover RB, LB, RWB, LWB, RM, LM, even DM at a push.

McLaughlin either displaces Freeman or doesn't make the 18.

All about opinions of course but I actually thought he looked way short at Bristol Rovers. IMO he struggled with the wing back role and wasn't sure when he should get back to mark Gaffney and when to push-on. As a result he did neither for long periods and the game bypassed him for the most part.

Of course he wasn't fully fit at the time and I'd expect him to show a lot more should he return. That said, if Freeman suffered a bad injury in the first game of the season, would Riley be able to provide adequate cover? I'm not sure.

Feel this is likely as long as Conor McLaughlin doesn't sign.

I think Wilder would like McLaughlin but if it's a squad player we're after then Riley may be the best option due to being able to play on the left too, although McLaughlin is also versatile and can play in central midfield and at RCB.

I can see why both are appealing to us.

McLaughlin edges it for me. He'd be ours permanently, he'd be the best option in a back 4, we could end up playing with a back 4 more often than not and he also covers central positions. The downside is having no one for LB/LWB on the bench but O'Connell can move across if necessary. There's also the question of whether he'd offer enough going forwards from RWB if Freeman was unavailable.

That said, I'd probably rather just sign Jason McCarthy, then we'd only have to sign one other centre half. If Riley or McLaughlin sign, we'd need 2 centre halves in addition to them. Signing McCarthy would still leave room in the squad for Riley though.

I'd like McLaughlin, is it only me that thinks Freeman might not be good enough next year. I question his defensive ability in a 442, don't get me wrong he's been excellent this season but hasn't actually had much defending to do.

That's a very good point about Cox.
He knows what the club is like and what the club does with the kids.

Add to that the style of play, short drive/train away and that we are only one league behind them puts us in a strong position.

However, I guess it will still be the managers decision or he will at least have a say on these lads as they are still pros at the end of the day.

Losing Meredith to Bolton might mean they can promise Man Utd he'll get consistent first team football.

That would suggest that any deal we have in mind for him isn't as advanced as we assumed it would be. Three L1 clubs wouldn't be interested if we were 100% intent on signing him.

Man U will want him to play regularly so L1 until January is probably the best option.

It will be interesting to see who we sign in that position if he goes elsewhere. I thought his return was a formality. I'd like us to sign someone relatively young on a permanent deal. Maybe McLaughlin or Baldock on a free. Wouldn't say no to Jason McCarthy on loan though.

I think it's safe to say we're not getting Riley now.

I'm glad we've taken the option we have and brought a decent young player in on a permanent deal in that position.

However, if he does very well and we are in need of some cover in January I wouldn't be shocked to see us go in for him again.
