Someone just gave me a cigarette card of Jimmy Hagan signed by the great man himself and a programme from Blades v Chelsea from 7/4/1956!

They came to see me about something, knew I was a Blades fan and had no use for the items.

Cheered me up somewhat!

Blades team from the programme -

Burgin
Coldwell
Mason
Hoyland
Johnson
Iley
Ringstead
Hagan
Wilkinson
Howitt
Grainger

Blades 2 Chelsea 1

Goals from Howitt and Grainger.
Attendance 23,398 (one of whom was me)

Happy days – apart from the fact that they were relegated that season!

Would more than likely to have been at the game as well.
One of the contributing reasons why we went down was Mercers decision not to play Hagan, for many matches only recalling him on 30 March when we won at Everton 4-1, Hagan having a hand in all 4 goals.
However the damage was done and Joe Mercer does not rank at all in any list of SUFC managers.
However your post brings back many happy memories.

I think Burgin, Mason, Hoyland, Johnson, Iley and Grainger are still alive

I once went to Portugal with work and was walking around Portalegre in my red and white stripes, when (on more than one occasion) people came over -and before seeing the badge - just assumed an Englishman in red and white must be a Blade - - and the first thing they all said? "Sheffield United, Jimmy Hagan!"

A hero not only to us :)
