Jay .... Yay or Nay?

I think he's got a bit about him, but given that Carruthers has been given a long contract and Duffy has been preferred in that role this season, he's already our third choice attacking midfielder and I would imagine we'd strengthen further in that area over the summer. If he's happy as a squad player, fighting it our for a place on the bench then fair play to him and he'd be a more than reasonable option to have. If we get shut of him there'll be plenty of suitors at league one level.

Well that`s one way of looking at it, but I`d be well pissed off as a player, having worked my socks off all season to ensure promotion, to then be dropped for the " celebratory" games right at the end.
I can't even think of any players I'd give a run out to. Semple is injured, Brooks is stalling over a contract last I heard so fuck him and Whiteman is on loan.

Maybe I'd bring Reed on for 20 minutes for Coutts. By all accounts he's put a lot of effort in for the u23s and I'd like to see what he could offer this team.

Other than that, I agree, let the lads who've done the business take the praise and let them enjoy playing without pressure.

Rated him as part of a poor Chezzie team, plenty of goals in him from midfield so it's a big thumbs up from me, easily make the step up to div2

Definitely in for me.

I've seen probably a bit more of him over the last few seasons than most Blades as I've been down to watch Chesterfield on a number of occasion when they've been at home and the Blades have been far away.

He's a very good player. He looked good in a poor team at Chesterfield and in a good team like the one we have he will excel, I've no doubt. I think the little bit we have seen of him so far has been very encouraging. He's a class player - don't be in any doubt about that. Very skilful.

He's not ahead of Duffy I agree. Duffy is an exceptional player. He's one of those that dares to do something different. It doesn't always come off. But Wilder gives him that licence to roam around and create stuff and we do miss his creativity when he's not in the squad. He's the one player in the whole squad that can do that for me. We need more. But Jay isn't that kind of player. He's a bit more "mainstream" but still very good.

Carruthers... if I'm honest, I'm not totally convinced about him. He's been brilliant, in flashes, but he's also been pretty awful as well. Wilder says he's not fully fit and is catching up and I'll take his word for it. But in the meantime, you don't find quality players like Jay easily. Get him snapped up. If he ends up being a squad player so be it. But I think he'll be a very good one and won't cost the earth either.

Rude not to!

only made a few appearances but has played in the premier league back in 09 for birmingham as well

Sorry to go slightly off topic, but I've seen a few people suggest that when promotion is mathmaticallyt assured we can play 'fringe' or youth players.

I don't get that.

For me, when promotion is assured, thats the time that a) as a player I'd revel in, playing with total freedom, playing in front of a relaxed crowd, playing with a buzz and b) as a fan, I want to see the players that have won us promotion playing under previously stated circumstances.
Not only that but we want to go out and win the league once we've achieved promotion. After this has hopefully being achieved then we could perhaps see one or two youngsters given a game.

As for Jay, he's shown he does have talent at times but has only had limited game time. The reason for this is because our already established midfielders have performed very well so he's found it hard to get in.

For me, taking into account the amount of money we'd have to shell out and the attributes he brings, he's a stayer.

I doubt that Jay is a big earner by Blades standards. Why not just offer him a decent contract to reflect that he won't normally be a starter, and see whether he accepts it.

Tragic entry on Chesterfield's forum while they were 3-0 down at home to Rochdale on Saturday:

Our best player has just scored. Pity it was for Sheffield United.

Maybe Wilder ( and Mitchell) know O'Shea has that little bit of magic in him which could unlock Championship defences in the last 20 minutes of games.

36 in 173 good for a winger at Chesterfield.

2 goals for us already.

Chesterfield fans rated him but said he was a bit inconsistent. It's hard not to be in a struggling side though.

If his salary expectations are realistic why not sign him permanently. He's made an impact from the bench a couple of times and has generally looked lively despite having to wait for limited chances. I would be interested to see him have a couple of games in the Championship to see how he does. He's been a good player at the third level for a while so probably deserves a chance to test himself higher up.

The lad wouldn't be first choice but he would be a decent option to have and seems like the sort that would fight for his place which is what we need. He took his goal superbly at Oldham which shows he has some skill. Yay from me.

Don't disagree CBB, but we'd need BIG investment if we're wanting to seriously challenge for top 6 next year. We dont appear to have money to burn, and I deffo think JO worth keeping unless we're spending big. Don't think its certain that either he or SC will be behind Duffy next year. Made sense to keep picking main three in midfield whilst winning this year and using JO and SC as fill ins, but that doesn't necessarily dictate what pecking order will be after pre-season.

It's been difficult for O'Shea to really show how good he is.If we don't get injuries and suspensions and the current team continue to play well then the fringe players like O'Shea and Carruthers only get the odd 30 minutes or so to prove their worth.I think it is almost certain that Jay will be offered a deal and i think he has shown enough to suggest he will be a very good permanent addition to the squad.

Cant see him playing for us next season, we need more strength in that position and need to bring in at least 4-5 new faces

Was discussing this on Friday, it's pretty much a no brainer to sign him. 10 goals in a struggling team in Chesterfield and 5 assists for a free transfer.

CW will have an amount to spend on players and we have to improve the squad. We can go and sign someone from league with a similar record to O'Shea for 500-750k (probably what Carruthers would have cost if wasn't for contract situation.

Sign him up and use the money elsewhere on other players.

He takes a good penalty , if nowt else , i know someone , who is a rubbish penalty taker [ as well as Givens and Simmonsen )

I guess the counter argument is that we don't want to risk our more established players getting injured (or certainly the ones we hope to keep next season), plus it gives the management a chance to see the players who haven't featured so often.

My take on this is that Wilder has too much respect for other teams. If, say, we're up after Northampton, there might be Bradford, Chessie and possibly Port Vale with something to play for. Can't see Chris taking the piss with team selection, and if Chessie are down by the last game he'll give the first team the glory match anyway.

First off I'd say yes, if his demands suit a squad player, he has a lot about him, not the least of which is the ability to fight and according to CW play on poor pitches, Duffy certainly is a guy that makes things happen, O'Shea seems more like a Monty but with more footballing ability, he can pass, tackle, run, shoot even head the ball, not a starter in the championship but a very valuable squad player in my opinion.
On the subject of him not playing much, who realistically in the normal starting 11on most match days has let the team down enough to be dropped? Personally I look at the starting 11 and see all have a claim for league 1 team of the season.
O'Shea may just be the utility midfielder we need in the next stage of our rise.
UTB

No, great that we have this euphoria at the moment but when reality kicks in next season we are going to need more quality and his/Duffys position is an area where we will need to invest.

I was undecided about JayO, but now I'm not too sure. He is currently down the pecking order behind Fleck/Coutts/Duffy/Carruthers, so if those 4 are retained for next season then he may decide his future lies elsewhere. Mark Duffy is in the twilight of his career and may not be up to the rigours of a full championship season, so we definitely need some additions.
Ben Whiteman has had a great spell at Mansfield, but we will be 2 divisions above that level next season. If we have money to spend then I'd love us to try and tempt Marcus Madison from Peterborough.

Be stupid not to offer him a decent deal, clearly has an eye for goal and those contributions can be huge as we look to stay up and stabilize next year.

Worst case happens we sign him and he doesn't play we sell him for 2-300k easily.
