Jay McEveley

The harsh reality is that he was part of a very poor defence last season and if he is to be the linchpin of the defence this season that would be a retrograde step. I see him as a back up to left back and a 1-2 game filler to shore up CB on the odd occasions we need cover.

As I say, if we harbour any realistic expectations of gaining automatic promotion this time around then McEveley cannot play more than 25 games - if he does then the collective quality of our first XI will be below the standard required to do the job.
Now you clearly disagree with my assessment of a player and I have no objection to that but to dismiss my opinion as bordering ridiculous because it does not coincide with yours is both harsh and bordering the ridiculous.

My memory is not short term either.
I remember a particularly poor defensive record at home coupled with a particularly poor record in attack. Lack of quality all around and lack of tactical understanding of what is required to achieve success in the third division. A recipe for mediocrity that some appear to accept with alacrity. Maybe my standards are ridiculous, maybe I should lower them eh?

That's clearly what 4 years of third division football appears to be doing to some.

Your last point is the interesting one. 4 years of third division football clearly appears to make some supporters single out certain players who's performances have been no worse than most of the squad. In fact some players who have had far poorer runs of form seem to be blameless.

I feel your opinion of him is harsh and I continue to stand by it. Doesn't mean I see him as the defensive anchor.

Quite - I have not singled him out - quite happy to debate others performances being well below par but this thread is about him, isn't it?
I agree that there is a dearth of quality throughout this squad, it's full of mediocrity and similar style players. There is little balance and no real options to alter the play to do anything different but the centre back fiasco is recognised by all comers as the gaping hole that remained totally unconvincing last term. Well, that and the centre forward fiasco.

The one thing we clearly agree on is that the current team isn't good enough to go up. I've come to McEveley's defence because he seems to be getting a bit of a slating on this forum of late. More so than any other player and I feel it's unjust. Let's agree to disagree on him.

The centre of defence does need attention and so does the forward line but we have equal problems at full back in my humble opinion. We were incredibly poor in those positions in a lot of games, particularly during the playoffs.

Interesting JT, please enlighten me as to why you think that, otherwise you are a cunt (based on not needing any evidence to back up a claim).
Explain, I'll just get the other 20000 fans from bramall lane to, or in fact. He cruyf turn I'm his own box and loses the ball leading to chances. He passed to Harris under pressure, he tries skill in his own box to get out of situations "just get it out", his passing is shocking, his defending is shocking, set pieces as a team terrible! Shall I carry on? The hand ball at white Hart lane even though it was going out for a goal kick... worse defender I've seen at lane!

worse defender I've seen at lane!

I don't know............Did you ever see Nosworthy go on the pitch during the time we were conned into having him?? (I can't even say he that he played as that would imply he had some sort of talent.......he just wore the sacred shirt and ended up in our back four during games)

That is THE worst 'defender' seen at the lane.

Nosworthy was terrible ill agree, Jay Mcceverley is on another level. Just bear in mind mcceverley is just as bad as nosworthy in a lower league!

You didn't see Tony Moore did you.
There we were, probably 1979, the mighty Blades away at Exeter, stood behind the goal.
In came a hopeless looping cross, Tony Moore shortarse fullback stood on the 6 yard line, decides at the last second to duck out of the header
It skids off the back of his head and into the net ...................
I think John Mathews got sent off as well ........... epic day

After the 250 mile journey, the Moore OG was after about 14 seconds on memory!!

Have relatives in Devon, not far from Exeter, so we made a weekend of it. Spent the whole of Sunday discussing the own goal and trying to work out what Moore was thinking.
