Aside from widely regarded Blades 'legends' such as Shaw, Currie, Badger, Kelly, Deane

etc.... What are the key ingredients that specifically makes up a Blades 'Cult Hero'?

In recent years those which have stood out for me include Pesch, Allison, Shipperly, Nade and to a lesser extent, Hao Haidong.

But I can't put my finger on WHY.

Pesch - yes. Allison - possibly. Shipps - yes. Nade - maybe. Hao Haidong - he's not a cult hero at his mum's house, never mind mine.

Nade? Never understood the crazy passion for him. He was a professional footballer who couldn't get fit for a full game. Scored one great goal against Arsenal but nothing else.

As for Hao Haodong... did he ever play?

He did, in a cup match.

Nade scored one great goal against Arsenal, and made a huge impact off the bench when we came back from two down Vs Bolton, but did bugger all else.

He made a huge impact when he came off the bench at Reading and made Wally Downes shit himself. Legend confirmed... :)

not sure what ingedient means kelham

Ooops, duly corrected.

Nade diversifies opinion and hence could be regarded as a 'cult' hero.

Hao Haidong was selected in my inexhaustive list because I was so desperate for the "Chinese Alan Shearer" to be our saviour.

Dane Whitehouse, Michael Brown, Peter NdLovu, Tony Curry, Geoff Salmons, Trevor Hockey, Brian Deane, Derek Geary, Paul Peschisolido, Phil Jagielka, Jan Aage Fjortoft, Alan Kelly, Paul Devlin, etc.

Kevin Arnott & Tom Heffernan were two of my favourites from the 80s along with Trenton Wiggan. He used to bang the side of the players tunnel with his fist as he ran out. I wonder what he's up to now?

was he utds first black player??

Think that would've been Arthur Wharton way back in the 1890's. But certainly if not the first Utd black player since the war one of the first.

my blades heros are dane whitehouse, carl bradshaw, glyn hodges, brian gayle, alan kelly, dave tuttle, fjortoft, peschi, none of them world class heros but there players that always stuck in mind

Surprised Joe Bolton doesn't get more mentions in threads like this, he was very firm in the tackle.

PS Just noticed that Cresswell blade's avatar (above) features Joe's old stamping ground.

Dane Whitehouse, Glynn Hodges, Vass Borbokis, Bob Booker, Tony Agana for me. Usually someone with the standout ability (except maybe Bob Booker!) and often willing to put themselves on the line.

My old man always bangs on about Trevor Hockey as his 'cult' hero, think it was the beard and hard man image.

One simple ingredient makes you a cult hero for sheffield united......

scoring against sheffield wednesday. Simple enough. Look at some of the players who have become heroes through scoring against them. Akinbiyi, A Quinn, Kabba, Beattie, Lewis Buxton. :D

Ofcourse there are other reasons for becoming a cult hero, but scoring against the pigs is an easy route to attain that status!
