We all know that football ceased to be a sport long ago. It's a 'product' or a 'brand'.

Brands need to be updated, images polished. We need a 'makeover', a product relaunch.

Time to ditch 'The Blades' in favour of a newer, more appropriate name....

Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you...

"The Maltesers"

(PS....Only joking)

(PPS... It's better than the 'Spireites')

(PPPS... yes, I'm bored - can't wait for the England match tonight)

Leave off the spireites. Pick on the scabby Notts teams or the universally hated LeedsScum.

Chesterfield are no threat and usually have a good word to say about the Blades.

Plus Chesterfield so generously donated Jamie Ward.

I've nothing against Chesterfield - a good little club.

It's just their daft name that I dislike.

In the late 1920s, the SUSC decided that we should ditch the "Blades" as our nicknames and in the height of Bing Crosby's popularity they agrred that our new nickname should be "The Bing Boys" and Green Un headlines referred us as "The Bing Boys" rather than the "Blades" for a year or two. It never really caught on and we were back to being the "Blades" again

Absolutely nowt wrong with The Blades - a good manly name for a team (unlike 'Owls, Robins, Canaries,Minstermen  etc.)

Ditto our badge - up there with the Mini, Underground map and red telephone boxes as a classic design icon.

Ditto our colours - red, white and black (I've always wanted us to adopt the AC Milan strip...)

No, The Blades is just fine. It suggests boldness and derring-do. There's a stunt aerobatic team called the Blades. There is surely an ice hockey team called the Blades and, if it's good enough for the SAS...

Hi Silent!

Your encyclopedic knowledge never fails to amaze me. I'd never heard of the Bing Boys.
Nowadays it would be the Bling Boys, I suppose...

I suppose in the light of the battle of the search engines, its a good job we didn't end up as the 'Yahoo Boys'. Bit too gay for me...

about 10 years ago I received an email from a Blade based in Bristol. He said his grandad would often talk about Jimmy Dunne's headers from Fred Tunstall's crosses and the Green Un often would have "Tunny-Dunnit" headlines. I went to the Central Library to obtain copies of the headlines from the Green Un archives to post them to the Blade who had emailed me. Looking at the headlines and match reports for late 1920s and early 1930s, I was confounded by the numerous mention of "Bing Boys" and it took me quite a while to work out that the Green Un referred Sheffield United as "The Bing Boys" instead of the "Blades". I was intrigued to find out the reason for this so I contacted Denis Clareborough, who then explained to me that SUSC at that time wanted to adopt a new nickname and their reasons for the decision. Denis said the new nickname didnt last for long and we were soon to be "Blades" again

Perhaps the club was hoping they could get Bing Crosby and Bob Hope to make another film: "The Road To Wembley"!
