If Yeates is the answer

Q) Despite being unable to take a corner and fluffing numerous crossing opportunities,

who is the only player who ever attempts to beat a man and create something in

United's entire squad?

Yeates is the only player at times who does show a bit of creativity and can beat a man, however on occasions he tries too much. Also he seems to get dropped then when he comes back into the side looks like a world beater for one game then slowly goes off the boil again until he is dropped and then gets his place back.

Are people being serious? Why is it every time United get a winger with a bit of creativity about him he gets pulled up for not busting his nuts getting back to defend or being a bit of a lightweight?

Agreed. Firstly judge a winger on his ability to carry the ball and deliver crosses. Whatever you make of Yeates, he's better than anyone else we have at those two things. Paul Ifill got some hammer, but he scored goals and set plenty up, despite being utterly infuriating. Yeates is in a far worse team, but is basically a similar player.

The best true winger we've had for a long time was Paul Devlin. They don't come around often...

Because, despite all the recent cries for passing football (which have amazingly died down now we're trying it but not yet having much success) blades fans love a clogger. Me? I'd much prefer somebody like yeates on the wing because he creates scoring chances for others and himself. We just need to start taking them.

Who is no better, and certainly no worse, than departed Superstar and Swansea squad player Cotterill?

I thought Yeates was going to piss all over Cotterill, Pinchy? (I could, of course, be mistaking you for someone else)

No Guesty, it was me, I admit it. I think I was making the point that Cotterill was ludicrously over-rated, not that Yeates was a world-beater. Patently he isn't. He might have turned up that day at Wembley though, when Cotterill stayed home with 8 or 9 others and had a synchronised panic attack [orchestrated by the alleged manager]. Who can say?

Maybe if we ad them both, their offdays would alternate and we'd have a good winger each week?

I agree with the assessment that on the whole he's no better or worse.

Possibly once every 50 years. As Woody has been out only true international class winger we should be due another any time now.

Hmmm... I was going to say Whitehouse but then I noticed 'international class' in your post and for all I loved him in a Blades shirt I couldn't say he was at that standard. Still one of my favourite ever players and a thoroughly nice bloke.

I thought Whitehouse was in the form of his life when Spackman switched him to the centre, and shortly after we know what Ainsworth did to him.

A couple of years back when we went to Palace with a chance of going up on the last day, he was sat (or rather stood) in the stand behind me, and i thought if it hadn't been for injury he might still have even been on the pitch, as he had developed a football brain, was always fit and looked after himself and could have had an indian summer for us.

Aren't we forgetting this man?

Most of Keith Edwards hatful of goals came from the wing play of our Col..

Colin, Colin Morris, Colin Morris on the wi - ing.....!

>Whatever you make of Yeates
sorry my comment was tongue in cheek (hence the wink).. i didn't want to start a war.. i got roasted on here for defending cotterill and i was mortified he was allowed to leave. yeates is good but not as good as cotterill who he replaced imo

>I couldn't say he was at that standard.
umm i think he was. .wasn't he voted 'best player never to play for england' once?
