I know we are top of the league....

The issue in my mind is that we should be even further ahead. The fact we're not makes me edgy.

We are obviously doing well and having a good season, but it just feels like we are the best of a bad bunch this year. I think can see the Champions "only" getting 80 to 85 points, whereas in previous seasons the Champions have got over a 100 points and we even missed out on 90 points.

I dont thinks its necessarily a "bad bunch". No team has been consistently dominant. UTD and Fleetwood had their dips at the start of the season and Bolton and Scunny are having theirs now,

Unless Scunny and Bolton can get out of their "dips" Fleetwood will catch them and maybe us if they keep going how they are.

It's not a good season until we're up.

There's no difference between being 3rd or 20th if we don't achieve our aim.

Why did you start watching/playing football? Do you only play a game/sport when you know you're going to win?

It's about the moment, the excitement of the here and now, being involved in the action. If it's a good game then it's a good game, regardless of the outcome. The result might not be what I wanted but I can still enjoy the spectacle.
Do you look back on 2003 as "Triple Assault" or "Single Point of Failure"? We failed in all our aims but it was a hell of a season (for most of us) anyway.

No, not seriously. But it irritates me that we haven't got the points we should have (at least 6 more) because then we'd have nothing to worry about at all.

Agreed that we should have beaten Gillingham, Walsall And Scunny at home.

But we got some bonus' we perhaps may not have expected along the way so it's hard to say how many we really should have had.

Charlton away too, which still stands out above any other to me.

I don't feel we've had any bonus results at all. We've deserved pretty much every point we've got.

5000th post btw. Congratulations to me. I'm very proud.

The Triple Assault was a joy to witness because we went further than anyone expected us to. Those nights and that semi-final at Old Trafford brought great memories and we did ourselves proud.

Fast forward to present day, we've had one clear aim for the past 6 years, and we've failed to achieve it every time.
I don't go to every game with the expectation of winning, that would be daft. But as long as we're down here, even the victories aren't as sweet for me. We've won 4-0 three times this season and although it's been satisfying at the time, my mind is always on the next game and what it will take to get out of this division.

I'll enjoy the twists and turns when we're back in our element, playing teams that bring more than a taxi-load to Bramall Lane and going to grounds that aren't a choice between either a dilapidated doghole or a modern Lego monstrosity with a Frankie and Bennys next to it. Playing actual rivals rather than looking over our shoulder for fucking Fleetwoods results. Until then I'm pretty much following United out of duty rather than entertainment.

I’d say the difference ought to be that the manager keeps his job and gets another crack at it the following season if he finishes 3rd.

If we were top of the championship I think most of the supporters would be excited by the prospect of what we would get if we got promoted.

Top of league 1 it's hard not to be fearful of what we'd get if we didn't get promoted.

Think that hits the nail on the head ljk

That, and expectation. If we were in the Championship we'd accept just playing well at home and finishing in the top half, with the occasional challenge for the top six and playoff appearance. That's about where we 'should be'. We could be a PL club but we're one of about fifteen in the championship who could be.

However well we do in this league, we feel like we shouldn't be here and are desperate to get out. That makes it harder to take it game by game and enjoy it. I try, and remind myself that whatever happens we've got a good manager and if we don't go up this time, I'm convinced we will next season, comfortably. The sad thing is there's a part of me that wants the season over, just to put an end to the anticipation and uncertainty when the chances are we won't be as good as this again for a long time, we won't dominate the championship if we go up. So I have to try to appreciate being a big fish in a small pond, going into every game expecting to win and enjoy it whilst it's there.

But somehow it doesnt feel like we're having a good season.

Think it's the anxiety of previous seasons. Got a great manager, rounded squad and unbelievable support.

Get it right tomorrow and put those early chances in the onion bag and we'll be alrieght.

Won't we?
As per avatar...........comprendo?

Sounds like absolute nonsense to me.

I know some seem to suffer badly from nerves. Just drink more beer before the game.

The problem is this particular strain of nerves actually strangles your vocal chords for ninety minutes. It's called Lane Library Syndrome.

Bizarre, but there is no known remedy...

This is why I only start drinking in the afternoon these days

I see where you're coming from.. And yes sadly it is a reflection on what's gone before, but it's already a flipping marvellous season!..I enjoy going to matches again...So if we don't go up, of course I'll be gutted. But at least I have enough reason to believe we have, at last, got something good going on..I appreciate that's not how everyone feels, but it's enough for me right now...UTB

Fp, good call, I must admit I am actually excited about going to matches again. Bottom line is we are having a good season, it's just taking time for my senses to catch up with reality me thinks

Yep.

Can't complain too much at our current position (remember we were P4, W0, D1, L3 at one point) but not being further ahead just means that there is a very remote possibility that something completely bonkers details us.

And if there is a club to which you can guarantee the completely bonkers happens to...

Bristol rovers, Milton Keynes and Peterborough at home could all have finished as draws on different days., but agree on the ones that got away

4 or 5 points more would be a fair reflection on how we have played and make the league table look all the better.

More bothered about what is to come, still a fair bit of work to finish in the top two and it needs to start with a win today UTB
