I caught the ball on Saturday

Managed full contact with the matchball once in the best part of 50 years.

Hartlepool away in the League cup in 1988/89. Howling wind (despite it being August) and the few Blades making the trip after relegation the previous season huddled together freezing on the open end. They had portable toilets down in the corner and I went for a piss during the second half. Just leaving the bog and the ball is bouncing over the wall. No-one else within 20 yards so I was obliged to retrieve it and lob it back to their right back. Heady stuff indeed.

Did I mention I got Paddy's gloves after Crewe away in the promotion season :)

Was the ball still attached to them?

When I was at school we went to the England Schoolboys (perhaps U17's) game at Saltergate. We were stood behind the uncovered goal at the far end and it was sparsely attended to say the least, being a regular at United, I knew a lot of the chants and stuff, whereas some of my mates had never been to a match. The ball came over the top of the fences and we all made a mad dart to get the ball... which I did. I was well chuffed, so I lined up to take a massive Peter Kay 'av it' style boot...which I did. The ball sailed right into the crush barrier and rebounded back and off to the side... I was lucky it didn't fly back behind me and go over the wall onto the road behind!

I have never attempted to get the match ball since although I was dead happy with myself I was also embarrassed by the outcome! So I understand how you must've felt Mic, the difference is that I was about 13!

Once went to a pre season game at Saltergate or an early League cup game and Blades support was sparse , ball was heading straight for me on the open away end and me and the lads were full of eager anticipation as the ball approached me and I had a chance to break my duck ,and some bellend jumped up ,scuffed it off the top of his head and the ball flew over the wall .

Same here, once in 30-odd years on the old side away terrace at Elland Road. The ball came towards us and I leaped up with about 10 others and managed to get a good fist on it :-)
