How Would You Spend the Murphy Money?

I think this is better done through loans and transfers out if we can organise them. Higdon for instance hasn't featured other than a sub has he?

It's more economically viable of course, but then you have the issue of the players that no-one wants

A battling centre mid who can win the ball back and distribute.
A centre half to come straight in to the first team
An out and out winger

Those three signings will win us the league.

Nice to have:

Does anyone actually know if debts are covered by HRH? Bolton are presently £165 m in debt, but funded by some super rich fella in the Bahamas.
As long as these people pay up if the bank manager comes calling then it is ok.

McCabe wrote off the debt to him and his companies when the prince joined us and Phipps has said that the prince is balancing the books since then. The first year it was £12m according to Phipps and that's about what KM had said he had been covering since we dropped from the Championship. What this second year under the new ownership will lose/cost goodness knows but there's a lot more expense laying pitches, paying off a whole management team of seven and appointing a new management team as well as buying quality players. Only the departure of Murphy has defrayed any of that expense to date and I don't think KM is putting any more money in.

"Not enough investment" was the cry four games ago yet all that is serious money. "Three more £500k signings" somebody says above. Let's hope we do as well as pay the thirty odd pros we have on contracts.

Cigarettes, whiskey and wild, wild women! A very old song.

Seriously, another centre half is the main need.

I'm wondering about the good injured players we have and what happens to them if the team we have by then is playing well.
It will take time for them to build up match fitness so will they be sold ?
I mean we our selves bought a few like that last season ...

A solid centre half is a must as injuries will happen and we don't want to go through a string of games with a nervy back line with the potential of conceding a hatful. A goalkeeper for the same reason.

A ball playing beast of a CM with legs.

Not asking much...

I'd imagine Brayford and Done would find their way into the teams pretty quickly, though I have no idea which position Done will play when he's back, I for one would love to see the movement of Done/Sharp together.

I'd spend it on some treatment for my aching bones and muscles so I could once again grace the field of play at forum football. I've heard of a bloke who once use to treat such ailments but now is doing well in a different profession. Perhaps I could tempt him in to his old one so the world can see what it has been missing;).

I say use the money to pay for two or three very decent loans from premier / championship clubs. To pay loan fee and wages, this way we can get in more quality in defence and midfield.

Once we have the loans in we can move a few of our boys out and get their wages paid to boot. (Scougall, McFazdean, etc.....)

It will be easier to attract new players when we are in the championship, perhaps one or two of the loans may become permanent. A look before you buy approach.

Strong rumour in Norwich that we are after Turner, he would be a good start. Then a big, powerful, athletic central midfield player, Adkins should use his contacts to get someone from the Premier league.

Anybody agree?

HH

I would spend a lot on a quality centre midfielder who could captain the team and release Basham to play at centre half alongside Edgar. The remainder would go on a back up keeper for Howard ,any others would be quality loan players until we trim the squad.

Agree with everything apart from that we need to improve on Howard, quickly.

The upside of loan players is they can help get you promoted. The downside is they leave once you're up there. It's short term. But hang on if you do get promoted then they might actually stay . It's a gamble.

I suppose this is why I posted this to try to figure out all the pros and cons of various approaches. Whatever happens with the Murphy money a lot of thought, experience, judgement will have gone into it - and some luck will determine the outcome.

I wonder if Adkins's contacts are more in Division 2.

As a footnote I don't know the details but it looks like Clough - almost certainly under instruction - didn't use many loan players (did he?); the aim for better or worse was to sign who we could attract permanently.

I can't imagine we would have been able to afford Edgar on a transfer.

I’d love us to sign Nathan Byrne but being realistic, can’t see that happening. Alternatively, I’d like us to sign a centre half or a ball winning midfielder like Morsy to move Bash back to centre half and Bradley Dack as a replacement for Murphy.

It’d then be nice to see us trim the wage bill a bit if we could find takers for the likes of Alcock, Scougall, McFadzean and Higdon and see if we could fix up short term loan deals for McGahey, Dimaio, De Girolamo, Khan and Cuvelier.

We lost £12m in the first year and have continued to do so? Our turnover is more than double our income.

Assuming some accounts have been published can anyone verify these figures?
