According to Wikipedia "Bolton were the first British team to beat Red Star Belgrade in Belgrade".
Red Star Belgrade weren't formed until 1945. European competition didn't start until 1955.
So, in the 52 years before Bolton beat them how many times did British clubs fail to do so? Maybe ten at the most?

Megson's triumph also happened to coincide with Red Star Belgrade suddenly becoming rather crap:-
"For four straight years (since 2007), they have not won the League crown. They have not had any major successes in the last four years. They have not been in the Europa League since 2007 and the Champions League since 2005."
