How do you identify?

I have good friends who don't know my real name. They only know me as (the) Blade.
Made easier by not living in Sheffield.

The Manchester United thing is just down to laziness in the media who can't handle big words like Manchester and the large number of ex-Man U players as pundits who understandably just call their old club United. Alan Smith is about the only non-local commentator who refers to the Blades as United in commentary without even including the Sheffield.

Until they started being good, Manchester City were never usually referred to as just City in general, just like how Bristol City aren't often just called Bristol. Obviously fans in Manchester, Bristol, Hull, Norwich or Bradford refer to their local club as City, just like fans of other Uniteds might refer to their team as United, but unless you're somewhere like Manchester, Dundee or Sheffield, the United isn't critical to the identity of the club.

Being a United fan could refer to a number of clubs, but being a Blade or a Unitedite and you're unquestionably a Sheffield United fan. I'd never claim to support Sheffield as that's a different club's identity.

I wonder how annoyed Bournemouth FC fans get that AFC Bournemouth just get called Bournemouth.
