Have we sold a player to Liverpool, Manchester United or Arsenal?

Reading the rumours about Brooks going to Liverpool got me thinking. Liverpool, along with Manchester United and Arsenal are the three most successful clubs in English football. I can't recall us ever selling a player to these clubs?

I'm sure at one point all three were trying to sign Barry Butlin from us......

I don't believe so and I also don't understand why some of our supporters seem so intent on ensuring Brooks will be the first.

They have the cash. Then when no one will pay the £25m it's been decided hes worth, it's a free shot at the board.

As they say on the internet "laugh out loud". Fuck me, Barry Butlin was a name I'd hoped I'd never hear again.

Our record league goalscorer in a season, Jimmy Dunne, was transferred to Arsenal for £8,250 in September 1933.
Kevin Lewis was Bill Shankly's first signing when he left us for Liverpool in 1960

Alex Forbes was a good left half for us according to my dad. He then went to Arsenal

We signed Billy Boyd from Clyde in 1933, he scored 30 goals in 42 appearances before moving to Man U in 1935

The story behind why we sold Dunne to Arsenal is that it was due to the great depression in the 30's. Apparently crowds at games at Bramall Lane dipped from around 25,000 to around 12,000 as there was very high unemployment in Sheffield at the time. We were relegated for the first time ever at the end of that season.

Maybe we should just take £2 million now and be thankful it isn't less. :)

Well let's hope it's a repeat of the 'Michael Tonge to Liverpool' story of early 2003 that never happened.

Come to think of it, have Wednesday sold a player to these three clubs? I can only assume that they are so massive that the likes of Arsenal think that they can't compete.

Off the top of my head, the Pigs sold Albert Quixall to Man Utd in the 1950s (for a British record fee if memory serves), Siggi Jonsson to Arsenal in the 1980s, and Bob Bolder to Liverpool in the 1980s.
