Nothing really changes apart from there's one extra loan player space in the side...

James Harper's loan deal at United has been converted into a permanent move until the end of the season.

The midfielder played against his parent club Reading on Tuesday night before completing the switch, and Kevin Blackwell says that the chirpy Londoner has really started to make an impression:

"He has started to really develop now and some of the Reading people the other night thought that he was looking like the Harper of old.

"He is getting on the ball and is an infectious character but he can play, and I think that Reading missed having someone like him the other night."

Harper's off the wall manner and whacky sense of humour can be an acquired taste, even in the world of football, but Blackwell recognises that it is a good ingredient to have in such an environment:

"You need someone funny in the dressing-room for the atmosphere, and it endears him to the other players."

So its just a permanent deal until the end of the season?

Certainly seems to be.

I thought that was the initial intention anyway, so I imagine it was just a formality.

Why only until the end of the season?

What message is that sending out?

It's not as if the guy is 36/37 year old is it as he's just turned 30?

The club exercise their right to take up Quiinny and Morgs 1 year extension, which ok, I suppose is fair enough, but we are gonna have the same situation arising in 6 months time with a number of players who again are nearing the end of thier contracts and could walk out for f'k all!

If we are serious about these players shouldn't we at least tie them up for a little longer?

This constantly looking over our shoulder for preditors nicking our players, is starting to get a bit tedious imo!

hear, hear!

I got excited when I saw the title and words 'Harps and permanent deal' only to be let down.

They guy has real ability. he has really started to demonstrate this. Get him snapped up!! He is keen to play for us now, hence get him to put pen to paper. I fear we may lose him at the end of the season if we don't sign him up now.

I have to say I agree 58, this short term-ism is becoming tiresome. Blackwell, get him signed permanently for fucks sake!!!!!

i reckon a loan player will sign within the next few days then, a defender most likely

Has anyone noticed how he doesn't celebrate goals at all ,either walks back to the half way line or towards the bench with his head bowed.

I think the way Howard outran him with the ball for about 50 yards down our right flank, whilst being fouled all the way by Harper, tells us why he is only here until the end of the term. His legs have gone.

For me Harper comes into the same category as Monty and Quinn. Not good enough. If ever this club is going to make real progression we have to look beyond players as limited as they are.

We're keeping our options open in case we get promoted, we don't want to be tied down to Championship standard players ;)

We've taken over his Premiership Reading contract - I ain't the payroll clerk at the Lane but hazzarding a guess I would say he's on 20K.

We won't be paying out 20K contracts next year if we're in the Championship, it's sensible from both parties side.

And that great tackle he did when he got booked demonstrated that perfectly.

Haven't noticed myself but if you noticed it on Tuesday I guess it would have been out of respect for his previous employers.

yes - he normally does celebrate so maybe there was something of that in it.

Just trying to read between the lined a little bit.
With lots of clubs in financial difficulty could it be that a lot of players will become available at knock down prices and contracts in the closed season and if we tie up our squad places we are then tied to that market through having to sell. Could it be that we will have more money than most because of our present prudence and will attract players because other clubs will be forced to trim their cloth in the closed season?
Does Harper become a Reading player at season’s end and dependent upon their situation we may get him on a better deal than we would now?

I really hope this helps him to kick on and show us his best Reading form. For example 8 Premiership goals in one season from midfield is mightily impressive. He's getting there and I'm a big admirer but there's some way to go yet James.

Just listening to a Numpty on RS that thinks he's a Sunday league player.

Not what he was at reading a couple of years ago at reding.Needs to improve a little to sign at end of season

He hasn't celebrated the last half dozen goals at the Lane at least ,I haven't noticed before that ,someone around us has noticed so much so that it has become a focal point.

To me it sounds like we needed to free up some loan positions quickly so that we didn't have the situation we had earlier this season where we couldn't play everyone. I would guess we have taken his contract on until the end of the season paying the same wages etc and we can talk about extending at a later date.

I would expect some movement now on the loan front with Taylor and Seip picking up knocks, it just increases our options without increasing our costs.
Another smart move with no risk and no additional cost.

Celebrating normally involves running up to the goalscorer, then the long walk back to the halfway line. Given his legs have pretty much gone, I'm not surprised he doesn't celebrate much.

We've already signed Fortune and Seip, Geary's fit again, we've got Jordan Stewart in - it doesn't sound like they'll be much more coming in.
Maybe we had to sell Killa to afford Fortune.

His interview on RS was incredibly strange. Didn't sound like he was enjoying it much at the Lane. I don't think the players really hate him as he said (!) but he wouldn't say he was enjoying it with us. Like i say, a strange one.

Not heard it but the boys on BladesMad say it was a bit weird due to 3/4 of the interview having to be cut due to James being a funny comedian.

I heard that too, didnt sound too much like he was committed to us. it seems that at the end of the season he'll be off.

Probably to a Sunday League Club ;)
