I was in the card shop the other day, and they actually want people to send St George's Day cards.

So commercialism may have its way and England might celebrate its (foreign) patron saint.

Some years ago, I was in Manchester City centre on a night out and there were a group of blokes in a pub we were in all wearing matching suits with roses in the lapels. A mate of mine (who talks to anyone) asked them who was getting married and one of the blokes replied "No-one mate, we're celebrating St Georges Day".

Top notch, ought to make more of it.

The fact that St Georges Day passes with a whimper makes me tyink its another of those examples of Englishness that the powers that be would rather we ignore for fear of upsetting those that aren't English. Or are they just worried that if they declared it a bank holiday and made more of it, it would become a day of blokes wandering around city centres draped in the St Georges cross getting blindo and singing anti-IRA songs?

I'm all for celebrating St George's Day... if I didn't have to work it anyway! Can't go to work and actually have time to celebrate it!

(Although with how un-busy we've been today you would have thought it was a bank holiday)
