Anyone know if there's an older club nearby?

Its about time someone amended the entry in wiki that alludes to Charles Clegg being the founder of SUFC. Its a myth perpetuated by Pigs over the years that their man Clegg was the architect of SUFC being formed. The reference to the Pigs owning the Blades nickname is also inaccurate as both teams were known as the Cutlers and referred to themselves as Blades for away games. Its only when we wanted to adopt the nickname they bleated they were the bigger club who were here first. Nothings changed in the last 130 years.

Clegg was President of both Sheffield United Cricket Club and the Wendies as they were known then. He was also a member of the FA. The FA keen to create a second division were looking for teams to take part. Clegg was reluctant to endorse another football team in Sheffield where cricket was the primary sport. He did not want a new team to compete with his team the Wendies but he was over ruled by the FA.

The inspiration behind SUFC was another Charles, Charles Stokes who was the cricket club secretary at the time and saw the potential of the earning power of football following an fa cup semi final being played at the Lane 6 days before our formation. As the pigs had taken their ball home and refused to pay for Bramall Lane and gone elsewhere it was an opportunity to fill the gap. In years later SWFC found difficulty minding the gap which continues to this present day.

The above article confirms Charles Stokes as the inspiration behind SUFC's formation going on to be our Chairman during our most successful period in our history.

To celebrate this momentous occasion, and celebrating the Sheffield double, today I did the H*llsborough parkrun while wearing a Blades shirt (my first and probably only time doing this particular parkrun 😆). Looks like there were about a dozen or so other Blades that had the same idea. Shouting "Up The Blades!" to each other in the piggies' backyard was great fun!⚔️
